Dr. David Matlock might look familiar. As one of the featured physicians on "Dr. 90210," the plastic surgeon draws reality TV-watching clientele from around the country -- and the world -- to his office in Beverly Hills.

Fashion critic Robin Givhan of the Washington Post called movie stars to action today. She suggested that celebs should (gasp!) actually buy their couture instead of expecting freebies -- if they want their favorite designers to weather the economic crash. In fact, she argues, it's the patriotic thing to do.

Writes Givhans: "[Celebrities] might even find a certain dignity in being able to respond to the ubiquitous red-carpet question -- Whose dress is that? -- with a simple, but profound, answer: Mine."

    Faux pas. Normally flawless Reese Witherspoon flops with this limp blue gown that looks like it arrived at the Oscars via a deep puddle. This Rodarte disaster made her look lopsided, bedazzled and 20 years older.

We have to agree with Givhan's stance on the matter. Fitting a celebrity for a red-carpet event is a notoriously thankless, unpaid job. And the sheer cost involved discriminates against young and independent designers, who can't exactly afford to whip up a handful of dresses for a star to choose from and fly across the country for fittings.

We doubt up-and-coming stars would relish Givhan's suggestion to simply buy something in their price range -- Viola Davis in J. Crew at the Oscars? -- but we've never understood why the very people who can actually afford high fashion rarely pay for it.

Let's be honest. These days, as Givhan rightfully points out, almost any designer would much rather have a check for $10k versus some press coverage in People.

THE SCOOP: Elie Camparo, lead stylist for Frederic Fekkai, created the oversized buns at Alice + Olivia's celeb-studded presentation with one thing guiding him: the designer's vision. He viewed his role as helping Alice + Olivia founder Stacey Bendet bring her aesthetic to life. "It's the designer's show," Camparo said. "We just do the hair."

The sleek hairstyle he achieved can be recreated at home, though we wouldn't expect Camparo-level results in your own bathroom, of course. "Smooth out the hair with a little Fekkai Coiff Magnifique to take care of the flyaways," he suggests. Then pull it back in a ponytail, twist into a bun, and finish with a bit of Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray. It's a wrap!

THE SCOOP: The preening backstage at Preen may have been slighty 1960s-inspired, but the look was in no way outdated. MAC makeup artist James Kaliardos created a bold eye with heavy, black eyeshadow and a touch of white, and by lining the entire rim. The rest of the face remained relatively untouched. "We wanted to something graphic and strong," explained Kaliardos, a long-time Preen collaborator. Stylist Paul Hanlon said the hair was "super simple" and "slightly masculine." Sideswept fringe and glassy, straight ponytails dominated. (Hanlon mentioned "Quadrophenia," a 1980s film about 1960s London mods, as an inspiration.)

THE SCOOP:
The fact that Zero + Maria Cornejo's Fall 2009 show was held at the Robert Miller Gallery was not lost on Shiseido makeup artist Dick Page. He took an oil painter's approach to his work. The final product was a makeup-mashup of Siouxsie and the Banshees, modern art and cyberpunk.

Page applied a severe, trompe l'oeil eye by using black cream liner to rim the and fill in the lids. Then, he added random streaks of gold and purple shadow to imitate "electric light and flashing colors." The resulting shade was deep and multidimensional, calling to mind he iridescent sheen of a puddle of gasoline or a peacock feather. The final touch? Faux eyelashes drawn on with cream liner and eyebrows extended outwards at the base in spider-like strokes. "It all has to come from the same hand," he said of the precise paintjob.

With the emphasis on the eyes, Page went for a minimal look on the rest of the face, leaving "very, very plain skin and very natural lips."
