But here in this video you see that with a few scraps of cardboard and a little effort, folding your shirts can be quite simple. Then again, it seems a little over the top to actually construct something like this just to fold shirts.

If you do end up actually building a replica of this ingenious cardboard contraption, please let me know (and send pictures of it). And if something like this truly interests you, but you're not exactly crafty, then check out the $10.99 Perfect Fold Garment Folder over at Amazon.com and save yourself some trouble.
Fold your shirts quickly and perfectly with cardboard originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 24 Sep 2007 09:20:00 EST. External hard drives are all the rage now, and they've become incredibly affordable. For the most part, though, these massive storage devices aren't very appealing to the stylish.

That's where the LaCie Golden Disk comes in. This external hard drive is made of a gold-colored metal, and it's an "inspiring, luxurious design" according to their Web site that is certainly quite unique. The top panel has a wavy, liquid-like design, creating an interesting look for your desktop. It was designed by Ora-Ïto, who has also designed an ergonomic Louis Vuitton backpack. The drive has a 500 gigabyte capacity (yes, more than you'll ever need!) and is available for pre-order at $189, which is actually a decent price for what you're getting.

The holy grail of hard drives originally appeared on StyleList on Sat, 22 Sep 2007 08:36:00 EST. And as their Website says, a mid-day nap boosts alertness, learning, memory and mood.

These pods are sphere-shaped, and surround your upper body in order to block out sound as you recline on the "ergonomic" leg rests. It even has a built-in alarm clock; no annoying noises, just a gentle vibration to wake you from your slumber. What's interesting about MetroNaps is the focus on the supposed "science" of naps, and they even say that naps can make you look younger. They suggest employers order a few pods for the office in order for workers to stay productive. I can foresee many people abusing the napping privilege by extending the recommended 20 minute power nap.

It's kind of a frightening contraption at first glance, looking much like a giant football helmet, but I think I might be able to fall asleep in one if it came down to it. And I certainly wouldn't mind being able to take naps during the workday; if you're in New York, there are two MetroNaps locations where you can give the pods a try.
What's cooler than taking a nap on the job? originally appeared on StyleList on Sat, 06 Jan 2007 15:19:00 EST. It's sort of like the typical drink machines in fast food restaurants -- place a cup under the spout, press the lever, and out comes your drink of choice. But in this case, it's with wine.

Enomatic's system offers quite a few benefits. It provides a way for customers to serve themselves, it preserves the wine for up to 3 weeks, and because it's computerized, it's a way to prevent over-pouring by the wait-staff. And they even offer a "wine card," where patrons can put money on the card to spend in the machine. They offer machines to hold up to 16 wine bottles, which beats the biggest soda machines I've ever seen.

So, imagine this: sitting in a nice restaurant and asking for a refill of your chardonnay, only to hear -- "Oh, you do it yourself. The wine machine's right over there." What do you think? Or even better, having a small version in your house to keep your wine fresh?
Tired of soda machines? With their Nike iD Website, you can pick a shoe design, pick the colors for almost every aspect of it, have a short message embroidered on the heel, and then have them shipped to your doorstep. They certainly aren't cheap though -- for many of the shoes, the customized editions will run you $150; however, some are in the low $100 range. There's a big selection of men's and women's shoes on the site, so everyone can match their shoes to their outfits or their iPod (as Nike's site suggests).

I think it's a cool idea, as it provides a way to spruce up the common tennis/running/soccer/football shoe by picking your own color combinations. But, as I came to find out, it can be very easy to design a very, very ugly pair of shoes. And I'm not sure I would rely on an online image for ordering an expensive pair of tennis shoes!

What first interested me about the custom Nike shoes was the option to customize Air Max shoe designs from past generations. You can choose shoe models from '90, '91, '93, '95, and '97. So, if you missed out on a certain pair of shoes from the 90's, here's your chance to redeem yourself.
Color-coordinate with personalized Nike shoes originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 02 Jan 2007 17:30:00 EST. It's best to nail these outfits, and then move on to more trendy things. Now, there are definitely more than five things we guys need to have in our closets. I took a look in my closet and tried to determine what I really needed. This list is assuming that you have some of the basics to begin with.

1. A nice pair of khaki pants. Sure -- they're nothing fancy, but that's just it. With a nice pair of khaki pants, you have a ton of options; throw on a decent t-shirt, and you've got a simple, casual outfit; don a dress shirt and tie, and you're looking spiffy enough to show up to the office. And I'll let you in on a secret -- my favorite pair is from Old Navy. I'm not usually a fan of Old Navy clothing, but I've gotten a ton of compliments of "oh, what nice pants" I'm wearing.

2. A variety of solid-colored t-shirts. Whether it's using it as an undershirt, or wearing it on its own, it's a key element to a casual, simple wardrobe. Color-coordinate your t-shirt with a sweater (And throw out those old white v-necks!), or wear one solo every day of the week.

3. A quality black suit. It's absolutely essential to have a suit on hand. It's going to come in handy for any number of things -- job interviews, formal dinners, weddings. And when the occasion doesn't call for a jacket, you've got a nice pair of black dress pants on their own. Oh, and by the way, it doesn't have to be expensive! (Dress-shirt and black shoes required).

4. A pair of brown shoes. This goes along the same lines as the khaki pants -- they're perfect for keeping it casual, or stepping it up a little bit. And please, no penny-loafers or wingtips -- they can't ever be casual.

5. Boxer-briefs. That's right guys, time to grow up. No more briefs or cartoon-patterned boxers, these are much more comfortable and respectable. Certainly, the underwear category isn't all that important to us like it is to women, but it's something you wear every day. And yes, I realize when buying CK or Tommy Hilfiger brand underwear, the revealing picture of the male model just isn't necessary -- just close your eyes.
Five items every guy needs originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 28 Dec 2006 09:40:00 EST. As reported by Variety.com, A&E IndieFilms is putting together a documentary of Wintour at work, more specifically the work she did to create the September issue of Vogue, which is the so-called annual "fashion bible."

With the success of the recent film "The Devil Wears Prada," -- which was reportedly based on Wintour -- the company thinks this documentary will be well-received. A&E IndieFilms says the documentary will be "a very candid and very exclusive window into this iconoclast, her fame and her notoriety."

If Wintour is as cold and insincere as Anne says, then I think this documentary won't try to hide it. And she may not be the friendliest person on earth, but she's proven that she can run a successful magazine. I'm also interested to see how a huge magazine like Vogue comes together from start to finish.

The one catch? The film isn't set to debut until 2008.
Vogue's editor-in-chief to hit the big screen originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 21 Dec 2006 17:35:00 EST. According to the Associated Press, however, the latest Miss USA, Tara Conner, hasn't exactly been the quintessential queen. She has suffered some criticism for rumors about her drinking habits since she won the the title (while she was only 20).

But more importantly, Mr. Donald Trump owns the Miss Universe Organization, and he had considered stripping Miss USA of her title because of the drinking. But since Trump is such a nice guy, he's going to let her keep her title, with hopes that she'll be the "comeback kid."

I find it a little disconcerting that Trump has the power the make this decision. The real estate mogul really has a piece of so many companies and organizations. What's next? Will he be the one to decide whether or not the president should be impeached? Or will he even be the one giving presidential pardons?
Trump lets Miss USA keep her title originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 19 Dec 2006 17:41:00 EST. Like almost everyone there, I took a bottle of wine and a couple glasses. But with the combination of concrete on the ground, darkness, and people continuously bumping into me, it just wasn't the best idea to bring this stuff. Needless to say, I came home with a broken wine glass.

But there's good news -- Hardy Wine Company has launched the "Shuttle." It's an all-in-one, single-serving (187ml), bottle-glass combination that is sure to come in handy for many occasions. The glass actually seals the bottle, and when you're ready to drink, just twist it off. Both the glass and the bottle are made of acrylic, which is perfect for events where glass isn't permitted. For now, it comes only in either Shiraz or chardonnay.

The "Shuttle" seems like a great idea to me. It's better than risking your stem-ware or venturing into boxed wine!
Get your wine to go! originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 19 Dec 2006 16:35:00 EST. I guess the vast array of colors wasn't enough for Crocs connoisseurs, however, because you can now personalize your Crocs with footballs, flowers, flags, and peace signs.

Jibbitz makes these little rubber inserts that go in the holes found on the standard Crocs. They remind me of the once popular BeDazzler -- except it's for a pair of clogs. With Jibbitz, it's possible to make Crocs even more tacky! Pick out a few letter inserts and spell your name on your Crocs, or even show how much you love your dog with a rubber poodle insert.

I can't say that I agree with doing this, as I'm not a big fan of the normal Crocs in the first place. So, unless you're less than 10 or older than 60 -- yes, I think a grandma could pull it off! -- then stay away!

A set of 7 Jibbitz will run you $17.43, or about $2.50 for individual pieces.
Bling for your Crocs originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 19 Dec 2006 14:18:00 EST. Yesterday I got Patagonia's winter issue, and I've now added at least 10 more things to my Christmas wish list. Patagonia is an outdoors clothing company, and is a company that doesn't just pretend to make durable and reliable outerwear.

Their gear is perfect for the bleak winter days ahead, and I don't know how many of you ever go camping, but Patagonia gear is sure to hold its own if you're ever stranded on a mountain (or just hiking, skiing, whatever it may be).

And not only does Patagonia make quality products, they're also pretty darn environmentally friendly. They donate 1% of their sales to preserving and restoring the natural environment, while also recycling used clothing.

Check out a couple of the things on my current list from Patagonia: Cashmere full-zip hooded sweatshirt -- $290 and the Eco Torrentshell jacket -- $185.

While Patagonia apparel isn't exactly cheap, it's high-quality and you can feel good knowing that at least part of the purchase price is going towards a worthy cause. But now that I think about it, with such steep prices -- I'd say they should be donating more along the lines of 15% of all sales to environmental restoration!
Outdoors clothing that's outdoors-friendly originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 20 Nov 2006 16:04:00 EST. They've rented out space in the heart of Times Square for -- drum roll -- a 20-stall public bathroom! And the stylish part? There will be attendants assigned to clean out each stall after every use.

The bathroom is located at 1540 Broadway, and will be open November 20 to December 31 from 8 a. to 11 pm. There's even a big Charmin bear to get your picture taken with. (Or your kids!).

A sign outside will proclaim "You are in New York. Go in style." So after some shopping on Fifth Avenue, or a walk through Times Square, you might need to go. Now you can -- stylishly.
Really gotta go? They're from Sweet Street Desserts, and aren't exactly cheap, but are incredibly delicious.

They, of course, have all the basic dessert options: cheesecake, carrot cake, brownies, scones, and even bread pudding. But it's their creative twist on the standard desserts that made my taste buds rejoice.

First, Creme Brulee Cheese. Yep -- vanilla bean creme brulee layered onto a very light cheesecake. They say it's "so chic," and I agree. A 14-slice version will cost you $65.50 with shipping.

Next, the Irish Cream Bash -- white chocolate mousse, chocolate cake crumbles, and a little Irish cream. Delicious. $61.50 with shipping.

And finally, my favorite, the Choc'late Lovin Spoon Cake. I can't describe it any better than the way they've done it: "a giant mouthful of chocolate pudding between two layers of dark, moist chocolate-drenched chocolate cake." This stuff will cost you $63, but it's well worth it.

These are great for gifts/birthday parties or just simply for the love of desserts. And if you want to spread the love, they even offer fundraising opportunities!
Ultimate desserts that are oh "so chic" originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 17 Nov 2006 15:48:00 EST. And it's darn near impossible not to impress your friends with a nice, big, stainless-steel grill in your backyard. It's what makes me want to start saving my pennies for a Kalamazoo Grill.

Kalamazoo grills aren't your standard black charcoal grills or even seemingly high-priced gas grills. They are the "biggest, meanest, off-the-charts grill in the land," as the website puts it frankly. As customizable as these grills are (they offer a complete appliance and storage module catalog to purchase with the grill), you can turn your patio into a serious gourmet kitchen.

The "Bread Breaker" is their fairly standard model, but I'd say it's incorrectly named. It should be the "Bank Breaker," as prices start at $6,990. But it doesn't stop there -- the highest-priced grill on the website checks in at a whopping $21,950! Sure, the grill comes paired with granite countertops and can cook with hardwood, charcoal, or gas -- but a grill for more than $20,000? I first saw these grills featured on the Travel Channel's "Billionaire Toys," and one lucky billionaire spent more than $50,000 for his Kalamazoo -- fully customized of course.

These are for the ultra-rich and über-stylish, I'd say. If you had the money to spare, would you feel comfortable spending that much on a grill?
Gourmet grilling with Kalamazoo originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 17 Nov 2006 14:03:00 EST. Today, there are all sorts of variations on the watch bands, ranging from thick leather straps to spike-studded rubber. But I've run into something incredibly unique: The Original Tie Watch from Neves.

Yep, that's right -- a tie is used as a band for your watch. And these aren't just solid-colored ties, they've got all kinds of patterns. They use vintage-styled ties to create quite a different look for the standard watch. First -- you pick your tie. They offer 28 different styles, but if you can't find one you like, you can send them your own tie (as long as you buy the watch from them). Then, you pick your style. They've got a few different ways to wrap the tie around your wrist (Windsor, Pratt, or Persian). Finally, pick your wrist size.

The price for all combinations is $75, and all the items are labeled as "unisex." Not too expensive for such a unique item. However, one must proceed with caution: things could end up looking very tacky if you don't wear this with the right outfit, or pick the right tie for that matter.
Watches with a necktie twist originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 02 Nov 2006 11:42:00 EST. If the show had been airing during Halloween, this certainly would have been an official challenge: design a Halloween costume that anyone can throw together. Over at NPR, they've got a few Project Runway alumni and their ideas for a home made costume.

First, we've got Nick Verreos and his "Flavor Flav" costume, for which he suggests purchasing a "pimp daddy suit." Of course, you'd also need a giant (and maybe a little bit gaudy) clock to wear around your neck, just like Flavor Flav.

Next up is Nora Caliguri's "the (child) pirate who found treasure" costume. The necessities: a bandana, a white oversized collared shirt, an eyepatch, boots, and a sword. How creative!

And one idea that's sure to pop up all over the place this Halloween is the "team iPod" costume, by Katherine Gerdes. It's easy enough: wear all black, listen to your iPod and dance around the room.

If you don't use one of these ideas for your Halloween get-up, try dressing up as one of the actual contestants!
Project Runway gets spooky originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 30 Oct 2006 19:09:00 EST. With the changing of the seasons, the brewmasters of the world bring us a little something special: seasonal beers. Last night, it was cold and rainy here in Georgia, and I decided it was time to tap into the world of a winter brew.

My choice? Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. I had a couple reasons for my pick: (1) I'm of a fan of the year-round Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, (2) The label was so enticing -- I just couldn't resist. The picture of the snow-covered cottage and Christmas-colored text made it feel like December (and it just looks cool).

I'm usually one to pick more of a rare brew, rather than mainstream, but the Celebration Ale is just plain good. It's got a very strong taste ("robust" in beer terminology) and will leave that warm, satisfied feeling in your stomach and in your face. The Sierra Nevada website lists several awards for this ale, along with a quote from the San Francisco Chronicle: "...best beer ever made in America."

It's always more interesting to try beers like this, instead of sticking to the standard brews!
Celebrate good...beer? originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 27 Oct 2006 17:59:00 EST. And on this postcard, you write a secret -- it can be about absolutely anything as long as it's true. You mail it in to the owner of PostSecret, and he posts a selection of the postcards he receives for the viewing pleasure of millions of people, and essentially, you've told your secret to the whole world, albeit anonymously.

And recently, Frank Warren, the creator of the site, released a second book in PostSecret format, called My Secret: A PostSecret Book. Inside this hardcover book, there are 144 pages of previously unpublished "secrets." It's quite a fun read. (Well, there's not a whole lot of reading. It's mostly short notes, quips and pictures of the postcards!).

The secrets that people send in are sometimes funny, sad, surprising, and often very unusual. I've been a constant reader of the blog for the past year, and the postcards on the website and in the book are incredibly artistic and revealing. This is definitely a great book to have around, and would mostly certainly serve as an intriguing coffee table book.
Book Style: My Secret originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 27 Oct 2006 14:44:00 EST. (Yes, there were really 139 episodes of MacGyver). In doing so, Richard Dean Anderson -- his true-life name, which isn't nearly as cool -- sported a mullet.

This wasn't just any mullet -- it's now known as the "MacGyver mullet." It, frighteningly enough, resembles the mullet of Joe Dirt, an unsuccessful film from a few years ago that blatantly mocked the hairstyle. MacGyver's head of hair was dirty blond, uncombed, and uncut. He truly embodied the "business in the front, party in the back" motto of the mullet culture.

It seems like we've been talking a lot lately about mullets here on StyleDash, but hey, it's a cultural phenomenon we'd prefer to never show up again. Anne mentioned that Jennifer Aniston, Don Johnson, and Madonna all inspired people worldwide to copy their styles, so that leads me to wonder: Was anyone ever inspired to grow a "MacGyver mullet?"
Style foul: the MacGyver mullet originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 27 Oct 2006 12:01:00 EST. But awhile back, Express bought out Structure, a men's store, and renamed it Express Men. I was skeptical at first, as I was quite a fan of Structure, and I thought Express might do some undesirable things to this line of men's clothing.

Today, though, it's one of my favorite stores for my higher-end clothing. The store has all of your typical men's fashion -- jeans, t-shirts, dress shirts, ties, suits, outerwear -- except it's all a little more stylish (and not too pricey, surprisingly).

One of my favorite items is the 1MX stretch cotton dress shirt. If you can catch the right sale (which are fairly often), the shirt can be had for around $30! I've got several of these in my closet.

And if you don't feel like searching through racks and racks of suits in the local department store, I recommend checking these out. They don't have a whole lot of variety, but their options are quite sharp. This Shadow Stripe 2-button jacket is only $228.
Guys, find your style at Express originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 26 Oct 2006 17:31:00 EST.
