An extremely worthy and commendable activity, and yet the photo has spurred a mini controversy. Why you may ask? Her fashion choices, naturally.

At first glance, there is nothing exceptional about her casual capri-and-sneaker combo, but upon closer inspection, it's obvious that these are no average kicks. Mrs. O rocked a pair of $540 Lanvin sneakers to the food bank.

Michelle Obama has previously been praised for her ability to mix high and low fashion, but are there limits to her mixology? Sure, the trendy low tops add a dash of flash to an otherwise dull ensemble, but one could also argue that the pricey footwear was inappropriate for the occasion. Vote in the poll below to let us know what you think about the First Lady's lasted fashion statement

View Poll

This one-shoulder gown by Jason Wu was seen around the world. Proving her fashionable prowess, the newly-appointed First Lady boldly chose a dress by the relatively unknown designer. Knowing what works for her body, she eschewed anything too dowdy or cleavage-baring and instead focused on her favorite asset - toned arms.

Mark Wilson, Getty Images

Many a critic found Obama's Junya Watanabe cardigan rather unsettling. The controversial piece, worn over a teal full-skirted Jason Wu dress, should get points for blending brown and blue if nothing else. At least her clothes fit better than poor Sarah Brown's, wife of the British Prime Minister.

Joel Ryan, WPA Pool/Getty Images

While we're the first to embrace Mrs. O's style, we must admit that these clothes look like they spent too much time in the dryer. In comparison to the buttoned up Dr. Jill Biden, Obama's ensemble is more play school than preppy. Clearly, the argyle detail on a sweater is a recurring favorite.

While walking through a the White House rose garden on April 28th, Obama showed her love for a new designer, Sophie Theallet, in a full-skirted 1950s-inspired day dress. WWD reported that the First Lady was introduced to Theallet's clothing vis-a-vis her personal style consultant Ikram Goldman, and not Azzedine Alaia, for whom she used to work.

Another day, another argyle cardigan by Junya Wantanabe. We don't think that kids would mind as much as we do this particular ensemble. Love the colors but, in the words of Tim Gunn, "make it work!" The belt has an awkward placement and the shirt bunches in all the wrong places.

For her visit with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, Michelle Obama wore a black-and-white Isabel Toledo dress, an Azzedine Alaia cardigan, and pearls. Some thought the cardigan was not formal enough.

We're talking real exercise wear -- not yoga pants and a baggy T-shirt, but a leotard and tights. She then led a mini-workout that showed age 71 can still look amazing.

Back in the 1980s, Fonda's workout videos sold millions of copies and women around the nation copied her high-cut bodysuits and spandex legging-looks.

She also always knew how to work a belt -- a great technique still for quickly "shedding" a few pounds no matter your age.

Fonda reports on her blog that she had a blast doing the show, and helping her team from "33 Variations" raise close to $200,000 for charity.

How does she do it? She reports a nap before the show was a good call.

If she's not inspiration enough for how to age gracefully, check out the photos in this gallery of sexy women in their 60s.

These racy shots promote the second collection Von Teese has designed for the lingerie giant. Her first line stuck to gorgeous basics but with her second collection she has moved beyond bras and panties to designing more elaborate undergarments. But the real-life Larter also was obsessed in the best kind of way -- she wanted her character's look to be absolutely perfect, right down to her underwear, says costume designer Maya Lieberman.

In one of the movie's hotter scenes, Larter's Lisa Sheridan surprises the object of her desire, played by Idris Elba, with the old nothing-but-silk-and-lace under the coat trick. Lieberman says Larter came up with the idea for the vintage inspired ensemble herself.

"The lingerie was 100% Ali's idea," Lieberman said. "She wanted to avoid anything stripper inspired because she felt strongly that her character would pick something high fashion and sophisticated."

Lieberman used two pieces from different sets and dyed them to match.

The final look? Classy, sexy and surprisingly demure. A nice change, no doubt, for an actress who first made headlines wearing nothing but a whipped cream bikini in 1999's "Varsity Blues."

Feeling fashion obsessed yourself? Head over to BlackVoices to enter their "Obsessed" sweepstakes. Grand prize is a a $1,375 Hermes "Garden Party" tote and a $1,000 spa package. Can you get any more obsession worthy?

And after the jump, more on how Lieberman created Larter's look and that of Beyoncé Knowles, who plays the woman wronged.
Continue reading Ali Larter is "Obsessed"

Ali Larter is "Obsessed" originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 22 Apr 2009 18:30:00 EST. A skinny waist cincher can get lost on fuller frames, wider cuts can overwhelm petite figures, and matching colors can be difficult if you aren't used to accessorizing. To make sure your purchase is appropriate take into account these simple guidelines:

1. Follow the First Lady's lead and invest in a high quality belt that can be paired with multiple outfits. You don't have to drop as much dough as Mrs O. did for her Azzedine Alaia studded number, but do make sure you spend enough to get a good leather that will last and age well.

2. Just like buying a suit, your first belt should be a basic. Black or brown are the safest bets depending on the overall tone of your wardrobe. Once you've learned how to work your new accessory, add a bright color or statement buckle to your collection for more fashion-forward looks.

3. The most versatile option is a belt that has enough holes to fit on both your hips and your waist but this isn't always possible. If you have to pick between the two, this season go for the waist. This position is figure flattering and can be paired with both dresses and pants.

To learn more about this simple wardrobe upgrade check out our definitive guide to belts.
The Beauty of the Beltway originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 17 Apr 2009 17:30:00 EST. Many blushing brides fall victim to the standard is-she-or-isn't she pregnant, or are-they-or-aren't-they-happy variety, but the whispers about Fergie are unique. The buzz around Josh Duhamel's new Mrs. is that she's losing her hair. This recent shot of Fergalicious shows the singer with an unusually wide part and what looks like it could be the beginning of a bald patch at the crown of her head. The former Black Eyed Pea isn't in need of a wig quite yet, the problem does seem to be getting worse since she went brunette. While there are many possible reasons for Fergie's increased scalp exposure (too many dye jobs, extensions, genetics) Nunzio Saviano, senior stylist at Oscar Blandi, told Star magazine that "it mainly happens because of stress and dieting." As if brides to be didn't have enough to worry about, now fitting into your dress could cause you to lose your hair!

For a look at a fuller-locked Fergie, and the other brunette beauties in Hollywood, check out the gallery below.
Continue reading Is Fergie Losing her Hair?

Is Fergie Losing her Hair? originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 16 Apr 2009 13:30:00 EST. Apparently a purple bikini. First 40-year-old Helena Christensen hit the beach in a lavender shade (see the gallery below), and then 43-year-old Cindy Crawford showed off her killer figure in this plum purple suit.

If Crawford's latest shoot for Allure left you wondering (or hoping!) about the role of Photoshop in creating her to-die-for figure, these latest shots confirm the mom of two doesn't need any help from the art department. Not that she's totally perfect mind you. "I think I look pretty good for 43. But I don't look the way I did when I was 23," she told Allure. "So if Star magazine or whatever wants to print a picture of me on the beach from the back, at the worst possible angle, and say that I have cellulite, I'm like, guess what? I do, and I never said I didn't." We'll have to take her word on that because we checked a lot of angles and couldn't find any proof!

For more gorgeous celebs in itsy bitsy bikinis check out the gallery below.

The singer herself sees it as all part of the same package, swearing to MTV that when she's writing her music she's thinking about what clothes to wear on stage. "Fashion is everything ... I want the imagery to be so strong that fans will want to eat and taste and lick every part of us."

While we haven't seen any cannibalistic fan activity, StyleList's has certainly noticed that Hollywood has started looking a little more like GaGa everyday. But who is really the copycat?

Back in 2008 when Christina Aguilera made her post-baby red carpet return at the MTV VMAs, a small but vocal chorus of pop savvy critics noticed that her new look was not exactly her own. Xtina's GaGa ripoff seemed like a one off, but in the months since then it's become clear that Aguilera is gaga over Lady GaGa and she's certainly not alone.

View Poll

Everyone from the formerly "Dirrty" singer to Nicole Richie have turned to Lady GaGa to inspire their new looks, but that hardly means the Lady herself is 100% original. GaGa's style collective "Haus of GaGa" is charged with developing the singer's look and while they have managed to put their own spin on each ensemble they haven't actually created much that hasn't been done before. Check out the gallery below to see where GaGa gets her fashion moves and who's taking their cues from the Lady of the moment.

Kate Moss and Sir Philip Green cut the ceremonial ribbon to commemorate the official opening of Topshop's New York outpost. The notion of this event has had the Big Apple abuzz for months. Yesterday StyleList was part of a select group of editors that were invited to tour the new space and speak with Topshop's Managing Director Mary Homer about the store's move across the pond and future plans for the U.S.A. Keep reading after the jump for shots from the opening, a sneak peak inside the store and to learn where Topshop will be popping up next.

Continue reading TOPSHOP Opens In New York

TOPSHOP Opens In New York originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 19:55:00 EST. We got the skinny from Heidi, and her makeup artist Linda Hay, on the inspiration behind the Spring Look Makeup Collection, how they dream up red carpet looks, and the duo's best kept beauty secrets.

Not surprisingly, it all starts with the dress! "I asked Roland Mouret to design my dress this year because he is so about a woman's body. I just love the way he cuts. It's sexy without showing off everything" says Klum. "Once Heidi picks the dress that's when I start thinking about the rest of the story" explains Hay. "It's never really finalized until the day-of. We're all Geminis so we are always getting new ideas and changing our minds!"

Once the makeup is done there's the challenge of how to keep it looking fresh all night, which is where the kit comes in. "The purses are beautiful and glamorous but they are are getting smaller and smaller, you don't have anywhere to put anything!" says Klum. Hay's solution's clever but always a scramble to get together. "I have never found a truly small compact so I usually give her powder scraped off and wrapped in a tissue with a mini brush, blotting papers because it gets hot on the red carpet. If her bag is big enough I will stick in a lip gloss as well" With her expert team their to support her you'd think Klum would have no complaints about Oscar night, but as it turns out there's one thing she doesn't like, "There's never any food there, by the end I'm always straving!"

OK enough about the glamorous red carpet life of a supermodel, what about the rest of us gals? Here are Heidi and Linda's Top 5 tips for looking red carpet ready.

1. Give your skin a day off. "On a day off I do nothing!" says Heidi. "If I am going out with my husband maybe a tiny bit of lip gloss or mascara, but I try to let the skin breathe.
2. For a beautiful 5-minute face Linda Hay says "Mascara, lip gloss, bronzer and you're good to go. But don't use the bronzer as a contour it's too harsh. Instead apply it anywhere the sun would touch your face." (In case you have forgotten over the winter that means your cheekbones, temples and the bridge of your nose)
3. To make your eyes look larger Heidi says "Don't do dark eyeliner inside your eyes it makes them look smaller. If you go underneath the lashes and put a lighter liner on the inside it makes them look much bigger."
4. Heidi anti-aging secret? A product she spent 2 1/2 years creating herself, natch! "I love In An Instant, it's how I take care of my skin."
5. "Putting a highlighter in the inside corners of your eyes and under your brows really helps" says Klum. "Even if it's just photos with your friends at dinner, if you do that, your face will pop"
Heidi Klum Talks Makeup and Red Carpets with StyleList originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 23 Feb 2009 19:15:00 EST. THE SCOOP:
The season marked the return of a Richie Rich designed collection to NY Fashion Week, but the fashion darling was not back as one half of Heatherette. He was instead presenting a solo collection. While the clothes were noticeably more wearable than his Heatherette fantasy pieces, the hair and makeup stayed true to his previous label's sense of fun. As hairstylist Jeanie Sayfu explained "the inspiration was about Marylin Monroe and Marie Antoinette and how they became more refined as they got older. The show is going to be telling the story of a cool punk rock chick growing up and become a polished woman." For the punk side Sayfu created a cornrow-sided faux mohawk and for the refined women a full-bodied curl set. To recreate the curled look on your own Sayfu says "Teasing is a really cool technique to add volume to any curl set. For a less dramatic result, don't tease it all the way to the end, but tease it at the root before you set the curl. The heat actually activates the tease so you get this really pretty full set of curls as you brush it out."

The makeup team took their inspiration from the imagined meeting of two beauty icons, Marylin Monroe and Edie Sedgwick. The result is a look that's big and bold but also playful "almost like the two of them did each other's makeup" explained the M.A.C lead artist. To take the look off the runway the M.A.C team suggests you "only line the bottom of the eye and then do a strong brow. Anyone with that hard pulled down smoky eye automatically has a bit of attitude in their look. To get a smoky bottom eye use a soft eyeliner and then a fine brush to smudge it and smoke it out."

GET THE LOOK MAKEUP: M.A.C Studio Sculpt Foundation, Dazzleglass, Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Industry, Fluidline in Blacktrack, Eyeshadow in White Frost, Mineralize Blush in Love Thing, Plush Lash Mascara in Black

GET THE LOOK HAIR: TRESemme 24 Hour Root Boost, 24 Body Finishing Spray

Fall 2009 Fashion Week - Backstage at Richie Rich originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 19:00:00 EST. BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: Graphic minimalism and 90s chic
THE SCOOP: Matthew Williamson is known for his boho inspired runways, but this time around the designer wanted a whole new look. Hairstylist Paul Hanlon explained "We wanted to reference the early 90s, like the photos Steven Klein used to take for Vogue. It's all very graphic and minimal. Normally Matthew's girls are a bit boho and this season he wanted them to be the opposite. Much more finished, harder and more graphic." To get that feel they used a ton of hairspray at the roots and brushed the hair very smooth. "The result is almost like when a woman comes up out of the water." Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury also followed the 90s theme creating a blended gray eye and a red-ish brown lip. "Everything is matte and there's a lot of blending. We are using lip liner which is seen as very 90s but I think everyone should use it. Liner evens out the lip and gives you the perfect pout."

GET THE LOOK MAKEUP: M.A.C Lipstick in Half 'n Half, Lip Liner in Spice, Eyeshadow in Print

GET THE LOOK HAIR: GHD Thermal Protector, Ultimate Hairspray, and GHD Reflection Spray
Fall 2009 Fashion Week - Backstage at Matthew Williamson originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 23:00:00 EST.

THE SCOOP:
Tom Pecheux inspiration came straight from the brand, "it really is about the Badgley Mischka woman. When you see a Badgley Mischka dress you just know, you don't have to see the tag. The woman should be the same." With that in mind he created a cocktail look for a young woman "who loves luxury and beauty, who is elegant and sophisticated, but isn't flashy." To start, create a matte finish skin and then cover the eyelid in a deep blue shimmery shade of eyeshadow. Next lightly dusk a gold shadow across the lid and under the eye. Then apply mascara to the top lashed leaving the bottom plain. Finally a subtle dusk of rose on the cheek bones and a lavender lip gloss rounds out the makeup.

The theme for the show? "Badgley Mischka meets Blade Runner, at least for me," said hairstylist Peter Gray. "What I tried to do was add a bit of a futuristic flare to this traditional red carpet brand." The look is actually rather easy to do, put the shaper (basically a doughnut shaped brillo pad) around your hair and then slide it to the tip, then simply roll up and pin. Once the hair is in position apply a generous amount to hairspray to help it stay put. While the shape is simple Gray cautions it shouldn't been done with clean hair. "When you wash your hair it is very slippery. To really make this work let it get a bit dirty so it grips."

To match that tone, hairstylist Rolando Beauchamp decided to go with a rock 'n roll inspired 'do. "The collection is really beautiful so we decided to do something a little rougher and not as neat to create a nice balance with the clothes." To give your own look a rock 'n roll twist simply pull your hair up into a high ponytail using just your hands and then give the hair a little tease. Next wrap it into an oval shaped bun and pin.

On to the makeup! M.A.C artist Christian McCulloch's look is a classic combination of a smoky eye and a red lip. For this variation use smudge slate colored liner and apply a single coat of mascara. For the lip he says "blend in a pencil but don't fully line the lips and then fill them in with a deep burgundy lipstick."

GET THE LOOK MAKEUP: M.A.C Studio Sculpt Foundation, Eyeliner in Smut, Lip Pencil in Currant, Lipstick in Underworld
GET THE LOOK HAIR: Bumble and Bumble Styling Cream (apply before blow drying) and Grooming Cream
Fall 2009 Fashion Week - Backtage at Cynthia Steffe originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 17:30:00 EST.

THE SCOOP: Both the hair and makeup artist simply chatted to the designer to create the beauty look for Tracy Reese. "We made up a girl in our heads, it's fantasy, who is this girl, what is she doing, what does she look like?" explains hairstylist Erin Anderson. The result? Soft and feminine makeup and a romantic tumble of curls secured with a simple barrette at the base of the neck. For her part, lead makeup artist Charlotte Willer explained "Tracy wanted to have a fresh look with an understated elegance. To show that we created a strong eyebrow, soft brown eyes, a pink cheek and nude-ish lip." To recreate this girly glow curl your lashes and apply a generous amount of mascara and then work on the lip and the brow. Willer says you should dab on the lipstick like it was a stain instead of applying it directly from the tube. To get the brows right "start with a pencil and then afterword use a brush to blend. If you really want them to settle in, use a brush to swipe a powder across the brow." As for the luscious tumble of curls, hairstylist Erin Anderson says it is an "easy style. There is no brushing involved, the only precision is the straight middle parting. Otherwise it's rough dried with your hands to increase body and texture. It's curled with a curling iron in random sections, it's not uniform at all."

GET THE LOOK BEAUTY: Maybelline Mineral Power Lipstick in Bit of Berry, Mineral Power Blush Naturally Luminous Makeup in Fresh Plum blush is fresh plum, Colossal Volume Mascara in Classic Black
GET THE LOOK HAIR: TRESemme 24 Hour Root Boosting Spray, 24 Hour Mousse, Finishing Spray
Fall 2009 Fashion Week - Backstage at Tracy Reese originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 21:30:00 EST. "To play off the clean lines we decided to do a strong bold eyeliner but instead of doing a normal shape we decided to do something squared off so it's quiet strong and graphic." The eyes are the star of this look so to complete the makeup Jennings did a simple sculpted cheek and a neutral mouth. The result is fresh and accessible. "Anybody could do this themselves and it's almost like you're messing up your liner because you're not doing a point so it's easy to clean up. To get the cheek right, smile so you can see where the apple forms. Notice where the point is and then relax your face. Start applying at the point and blend out."

To emulate the chic updo at home hairstylist Allen Ruiz says the key is prepping and texturizing the hair. "You want to have the hair well treated so it isn't slipping as you shape and pin. Once you have prepped, form a side ponytail and then roll it up pinning as you go." For longer hair Ruiz suggests twisting and pinning pieces to create the right length of loose strands.

GET THE LOOK MAKEUP: M.A.C Pro Sculpting Powder in Bone Beije M.A.C. Mineralize Blush in Love Thing, Dazzle Lash Mascara in Black, Fluidline Gel Eyeliner in Black Track, Lipstick in Fleshpot
GET THE LOOK HAIR: Avon's Advance Techniques Volume and Texture Instant Recharge Treatment, Adavance Techniques Volumizing Mousse and Hair Spray

BEAUTY SHAPSHOOT: Otherworldly and hyper modern

THE SCOOP: As lead makeup artist Gordon Espinet explains threeASFOUR is "not about looking pretty or glamorous it's really more about embracing the cool factor." Focusing on that aesthetic resulted in makeup that's very modern and almost futuristic. "Rather than doing makeup, it was about creating a lighting effect, an other worldly effect of lighting." No mascara, no liquid eyeliner, no brow pencil, creating this look is all about highlighter and adding color with out adding red. "The collection is black white and gray, so the idea is everything not red. When I think futuristic it's not about being rosy or red, it is really about almost being beige."

SHOW: Reem Acra

MAKEUP: Polly Osmond for M.A.C
HAIR: Bumble and Bumble
BEAUTY SNAPSHOOT: Soft, glossy, goddess inspired.

THE SCOOP: The look at this red carpet favorite was, not surprisingly, red carpet ready. As lead makeup artist Polly Osmond said "The clothes are very elegant so we wanted to do a makeup look that was young to give it balance. It's goddess inspired but still very muted and soft in all dusky tones." To execute her vision, Osmond applied a taupe eyeshadow mixed with a cream color base in a slightly darker brown to give the eye depth and then a swiped gloss across the arch of the eye. On the face, Osmond applied a highlighter to the cheek and then a dab of gloss on the upper cheekbone. To finish off, concealer was applied to the lips to take down their color and then layered with a neutral shade of lipstick. To wear this off the runway Osmond says to remember "it's about using everything minimally and matting down the t-zone so you don't look shiny in the wrong places."

As for the lovely side swept hair, the experts with Bumble and Bumble said the look was created because the designer wanted something "finished and polished. What we're doing is very sophisticated and very red carpet but the low part gives it a modernity and frames the face in a graphic way." To get the look start by creating the side part while the hair is damp and then apply styling lotion before drying it flat. Next smooth the hair into a side ponytail. Instead of a twist the stylist suggests you create a loose braid and then pin it up. "It's much easier to shape and control a braid instead of a twist when you are working on your own hair and the results are very similar."

GET THE LOOK MAKEUP: M.A.C Cream Color Base, Eyeshadow in Taupe, Lipstick in Shy Girl, Creamsheen Glass in Boy Biat
GET THE LOOK HAIR: Bumble and Bumble Spray de Mode and Styling Lotion

Fun, fresh, and feminine.
THE SCOOP:
The 50 models that took to the runway as part of the Barbie show depicted the iconic doll in the past, present, and future. Ranging from the fantastical to the easily wearable, each gorgeous look captured Barbie's glamorous femininity, but that was about all they had in common! As makeup artist Sarah Lucero explained "Barbie of the past was taken from the original 1959 Barbie doll. She has a really plastic thick lash, so when you blink it isn't even separated, with big sculpted eyeliner. The lip is red glossy lacquer finished off with Stila's Strawberry Lip Glaze. Barbie of the present's really glowy skin and pink colors can can come straight off the runway, it's fun, fresh and very wearable. Barbie of the future is bright and colorful, it's a masquerade look. It's exaggerated but to take it down you can literally use eyeliner pencils and shadows in the same pinks, teals and purples." As for the hair: "We did Barbie by the decades," said stylist Orlando Pita. "Barbie isn't really a little girl, she's a woman. We wanted to make her fun and elegant and not go to much into the draggy thing."
