And the winner is... French-born designer (and Michelle Obama favorite) Sophie Theallet took home the coveted CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize last night in New York City. The accolade, which was presented by Lanvin's Alber Elbaz and actress Nicole Kidman, capped off a months long crusade in which ten finalists (including Natalie Chanin, today's judge for America's Most Stylish Blogger contest) presented their collections to a panel of industry insiders.

Aside from being recognized by her peers and colleagues, Theallet will also receive $200,000 to put toward her business and future collections. She will also have the tutelage of top designers and seasoned buyers at her finger tips. (Though one must not forget that Theallet is no Johnny-come-lately, she previously served as Azzedine Alaïa's assistant for ten years and worked with Jean Paul Gaultier before that.)

Jeweler Monique Péan and menswear designer Patrik Ervell rounded out the top three as they were named first and second runners up, respectively. Meet the full list of diverse nominees here and check out all of the evening's glamorous pics below.

Fall and winter coats come in so many beautiful shapes, colors and textures this season, we almost can't wait for it to get really cold.

Take you pick from feminized military coats, puffers that don't make you look puffy, ladylike looks and more -- they're all on coat racks this season. And even though some coats certainly quality as investment items, there are many styles out there that appear to be much more expensive than they truly are.

It's not hard to find a look perfect for your style and budget -- we've narrowed it down down for you. Look through the photos below, taken on a cold day near the Brooklyn Bridge, to see some of the season's best looks.
This season, the classic coat comes many colors. The most important thing to remember: Avoid too much ornamentation.
"Though they're cute, epaulets are too 'Sgt. Pepper,'" says New York stylist Meg Goldman. "The more stuff you have on it, the greater the chance that you probably won't want to wear it again, which would be unfortunate with all the money that you spend on a coat."

The checked pattern has never gotten so much play. Tartan-loving fashionistas have plenty of options this season. Case-in-point: the a long coat, an au courant cape, or even a cooler-than-thou motorcycle jacket seen here.

Should you choose plaid as your exterior canvas, keep the rest of your outfit relatively clean so as to avoid looking like a mismatched Christmas present.
Which isn't to say that there isn't a place for mismatched patterns - lest we learn nothing from designer Dries van Noten!- but pick one item (ie Christine's leopard print scarf, left) and keep it in a relatively similar color scheme so the look is not too forced.

Last night Lucky Magazine hosted its sixth annual VIP kickoff event for Lucky Shops - a buying bazaar of designer goods that benefits Dress for Success. Held in New York at the spacious Metropolitan Pavilion, celebs such as Lake Bell and Katrina Bowden showed up with credit cards in hand, ready to scour the racks and charge away at the stations for Vena Cava, Rachel Comey, Tracy Reese, Pour la Victoire, and more.

Aside from the radical discounts (some up to 75% off), the retail mecca also included themed areas such as the Boudoir Bar (with fancy unmentionables), the Jeanius Bar (with sewers on hand to hem lengthy pairs), and an entire section devoted to HSN, featuring exclusive pieces that were created in conjunction with the shopping bible.

Susannah (our Style News Editor) and I were fortunate enough to attend and let us tell you, it was heavenly. After sifting through the racks at Vera Wang, See by Chloé, and Trina Turk, I managed to score some fab Bing Bang earrings and a Clu dress at $50 a pop! Susannah, meanwhile, honed in on a cobalt blue silk Tracy Reese top for summer.

If you weren't one of the, er, lucky few to attend, don't fret! The sales continue tomorrow for a $20 entry fee! Check out the official Lucky Shops map to chart your course!
Sometimes it's not so much about the outfit but the way you highlight it. A killer neck piece is a good way to jazz up an ensemble that needs inspiration. It will always be a conversation starter as well!

THE CLASSIC BOMBER JACKET
Cropped leather jackets are making a resurgence for fall. Update your look by going for a vintage-inspired bomber. (Bonus points for a detachable hood!)

Hayden Hartnett Dekker Leather Bomber, $488, available at www.haydenharnett.com

THE PERFECT RED DRESS
The fall collections - typically dark and austere - were populated with punches of color. Prada, Lanvin, and Dries van Noten eschewed the omnipresent neon shades for passionate reds.

Moschino red, pleated, v-neck dress, $989, available at Moschino NYC, (212) 639-9600

THE MEN'S TROUSER
You can't go wrong with a classic pair of black pants. This season, plenty of menswear-inspired trousers rollicked along the runways so don't be afraid go for styles with a baggier fit.

In addition to a hearty trouser, the skirt is also a pivotal piece this season. With a cute cardigan and the right pair of boots, the look can take you from the office to out on the town. This draped silk pencil skirt is a fun variation on the original.
Highflautin fashionistas will gravitate towards the over-the-knee boot this season, but let's be realistic, that's not for everyone. In lieu of a thigh-skimmer, opt for a classic number that you'll be able to wear with almost any ensemble.
Are skinny jeans still in?

A: Skinny is definitely still in. Especially if the material is a stretchy denim that makes it almost legging-like. (Jokingly referred to as "jeggings" - aka jean leggings - in our office). A nice dark pair in black or indigo would work well under a comfy long cardigan for fall.

This look would also give you many shoe options - booties, over-the-knee boots, and flats would all compliment the ensemble.
I have a hard time finding shirts that aren't too fitted but aren't too flowy either.

A: If you are looking for something to hide any extra bits, try a tunic. A good tunic creates an A-line shirt style that compliments your top half (i.e. the ample bosom associated with new mommy-hood) while flaring away from the belly so that you have some breathing room. Here are some examples from ShopStyle.com.

The thing to avoid is flair at the top and the bottom. That's not great for anyone. This isn't 1976. If you're opting for a tunic top, try for a comfortable but slightly tapered pant to create a balance between your top and bottom halves.

Another option is to go for jeans with a T-shirt or tank top, and wait for it...a long boxy boyfriend blazer! If you're feeling particularly adventurous, throw on a pair of sturdy leggings or tights underneath and the blazer can function as a dress. Check out ShopStyle for a range of options in terms of length, fit, and price range.
Fashion-loving "Gossip Girl" fans will be treated to a superfecta of guest stars tonight as Hilary Duff and Tyra Banks as well as designers Tory Burch and Georgina Chapman (of Marchesa) take to the small screen in this evening's episode.

Though the plot lines remain mum, the trailer hints at a swishy awards ceremony that must (we're guessing) require the assistance of the industry's finest.

Could it be that Serena will be wearing a Marchesa frock from the fall collection? Or will Tory be dressing Blair?

Check back tomorrow to get the play-by-play recap!

'Gossip Girl' Goes Ultra Designer Tonight originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 05 Oct 2009 18:15:00 EST. With all of the hubbub of Fashion Weeks around the world, we were remiss not to mention all of the cool happenings at Ralph Lauren as of late.

In addition to the stellar all-American spring 2010 show that just went down the runway, the company has also been busy making advances in the techno-sphere.

As fashion week was ramping up, I was lucky enough to break away to attend the U.S. Open with the company's dashing director of celebrity, Kimball Hastings.

At the on-premise pop-up shop, I was shown all of the innovative ways that one could shop for an assortment of Ralph Lauren tennis gear (the company served as the main fashion sponsor and outfitted everyone from the ball boys to the umpires).

A giant glossy touch screen (almost like an iPhone) was stationed inside the store for interactive purchases -- goodbye long lines, hello easy shipping on larger purchases. It was also great for locating an item in a different size, something I needed to do.
Continue reading Ralph Lauren's Fab iPhone App

Ralph Lauren's Fab iPhone App originally appeared on StyleList on Sun, 04 Oct 2009 14:00:00 EST. So long high heels!)

WHO WAS THERE: Eva Mendes, Jamie Dornan, Kerry Washington, Rose Byrne, Thandie Newton, Karolina Kurkova, Molly Sims

WHAT WE THOUGHT: Designer Francisco Costa's ethereal collection started off with white dresses that looked like they were floating down the runway. Then he morphed into a selection of creamy gray and taupe combos consisting of silk mohair and jacquard fabrics. Douses of color punctuated the lineup in subtle shades of coral, citron, and blue. As always, the attention to detail was exquisite and the influence of the artist Ferne Jacobs - who twists threads together until they become elaborate sturdy baskets - was translated well in the needle punched detailing of the clothing.
Not two minutes later, when the first model walked down the runway in a navy and cream pinstripe jacket, vintage denim shirt, work jeans and a cocked newsboy cap, you could see where the collection was headed. It was wearable clothing reminiscent of tough times, hard work, when people dug deep and got on with it.

It would have been easy for Lauren to go all frills, but instead he showed denim -- and lots of it -- in the form of jeans, shirts, jackets, and overalls. Even silkier confections bore an indigo hue. Helping to put everyone in the "yes we can" spirit was a soundtrack that featured songs by Lucinda Williams and Neil Young. By the time Mr. Lauren took his bow to Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" it was hard not to feel uplifted.

DESIGNER: Tory Burch

INSPIRATION: All-American girls, Native American design influences

TOP LOOKS: It's hard to narrow it down! The black blazer with thin gray T-shirt and tye-dye shorts; sequined black minidress; jean jacket with button down shirt and leather-studded mini; tiered white top with gold rope necklace and gold eyelet skirt; lush green dress with floral motif and khaki trench

ACCESSORIES: Gold chain link bags in blue and white tye-dye, canary yellow, purple and white; oversized clutches for day and night; belts with Navajo-esque buckles; leather strappy sandals in tan and black; moccasin flats; chunky gold cuffs; rope necklaces and others with that were modern takes on the arrowhead design with triangular silver pendants affixed on black silky cord

WHO WAS THERE: Editors galore (most of whom were salivating over the clothes)

WHAT WE THOUGHT: Even at 9am at the end of long week, Burch managed to get the crowd buzzing when she debuted her spring collection. The clothes were that fine mix of practical and playful (not to mention affordable!) - a sequin gold skirt was used as daywear when paired with a denim button-down, blue-and-white tye-dye was the pattern du jour for shorts, tops, and a dress, and there was even a black and white gingham suit on display. Topping it all off was not-your-mother's trench coat (read: one that the "kids" will wear and love).

The accessories were outstanding, too. The chain-linked bags in an assortment of colors were a particular favorite. Team Tory scored big time this season.
