American style icons have sported red tartan plaid for decades; making this stylish red plaid ruffled top by Priorities a perfect Week 4 challenge item in the AOL StyleList.com & BlueFly.com search for "America's Most Stylish Blogger."

The classic tartan plaid exudes an aristocrat feeling that for some reason always reminds me of a snowy Christmas by the fire. Granted I grew up in Southern California and normally spent my sunny Christmases barefoot, delivering homemade cookies to the neighbors...but it's what I imagine is standard Christmas uniform for everyone in the cooler climates.

I love the balance of a classic menswear plaid with the femininity of this season's hottest ruffles. Though the pattern, reminiscent of Oxford boarding school- with it's high collar and long sleeves- could be seen as a bit uptight, I think in this pairing you'll find this top to be fresh and fun for women of all ages.

In this look the top is styled for a fun night out; paired with a navy velvet bubble skirt- an excellent example of how to pair black and navy in the same outfit-a wide black patent belt accentuates the waist and the pairing is accessorized with piles of black vintage beads, and a modern black satin stiletto. I added a funky, zipper-edged black patent embossed croc day to evening clutch to complete the look.

The styling in this look exemplifies the eclectic pairing of "Conservative Prepster" meets "Rock & Roll Party Girl." I hope this look has inspired you to add a little Rock & Roll style to the prepster plaid in your wardrobe. Head out on the town in your newly styled look and remember....tonight's gonna be a good night!!!
My fourth style challenge from Bluefly and Stylelist is a Priorities plaid blouse. I love the versatility of plaid and how it can be worn in so many different ways. When I opened the package, my eyes immediately gravitated to the brilliant red color and the feminine, ruffled neckline.

For this style challenge, I wanted a daytime look that exudes a sophisticated, preppy yet feminine feel to it. I layered the Priorities plaid top underneath a deep emerald green, V-neck cardigan for added balance. I then scrunched the sleeves and pulled the plaid cuffs out for a more relaxed look. I wore pleated bubble shorts in a rich navy blue color to complement the blue stripes in the plaid blouse. The waistline was cinched with a brown, suede belt rimmed with gold clasps. I completed the ensemble with gold bangles and copper closed toe pumps. I was ready to step into town with my Priorities plaid blouse feeling comfortable, chic, and savvy!

Although plaid shirts are enjoying a wave of popularity right now, I rarely wear them, mainly because I've yet to find one that I absolutely love. That was before Bluefly.com shipped each of us this Priorities plaid shirt in my favorite color-red! This was no ordinary plaid shirt. In soft, almost flannel-like cotton, the shirt features girly ruffle details and a very distinct pattern. It was plaid love at first sight.

Immediately, the shirt evoked to me images of the English countryside (the truth is I've only ever visited London, but hey, that's what imaginations are for!). I wanted to do a modern take on that look, so I buttoned up a brown tweed vest over the shirt and pulled on a pair of dark jeans, then added a belt and boots to tie it all together.

The outfit is a classic, comfortable look, but still very fresh and contemporary. I can easily see myself wearing this indoors, curled up by the fireplace on a cold day, or out on a Saturday afternoon Christmas shopping with the girls. And maybe-just maybe!-one day I'll really have a chance to wear it in the English countryside!

Please visit StyleList.com and Bluefly.com to vote for this outfit on America's Most Stylish Blogger!
Sometimes it's fun to go vintage and over-the-top. A throwback to the grunge years of yore, the plaid shirt is back this year, and it's better than ever, with frilly, girly detailing and a feminine fit. Top it off with a large leopard coat and oversize sunnies, and you're mixing prints, becoming larger-than-life, and skating the line between fabulous and just plain "out-there." Be big, bold, and unapologetic - pairing your large top with a streamlined bottom in the form of skinny dark-rinse denims and over-the-knee socks. Love it!

(oversize sunnies, vintage faux fur leopard coat, Priorities Red English Plaid "The Delia" Shirt, handmade chain necklaces, handmade chain-and-pearl mailbox number necklace, dark-rinse skinny jeans, ribbed over-the-knee socks, slouchy flat suede boots, oversized leather tassel weekender bag)

Styling Tip: People may criticize your outfit - hey, we all have opinions when we come to fashion! The most important point to styling something is that the end result makes you feel fabulous. If you don't feel you're rocking it - no matter how on-trend, classic, or socially-accepted it is - dump it! For instance, I feel incomplete unless I'm wearing something I've made myself. Though it may be a bit much to some eyes, I layered on gold chains with this outfit - included one with a pendant made from one of those bronze numbers you might have on your mailbox. Now it's perfect!
Things could really only go up after the skirt - and they did slightly with this plaid number sent over by bluefly.com. I can only imagine the people over at stylelist.com having a good laugh as to what the girls will come up with to do with the products sent. I managed to work it into a relaxed ensemble - creepers, wet leggings and a white tshirt.
Having recently moved to New York City from Seattle, where plaid isn't a trend, it just is; I felt a little hometown comfort when I opened the package for challenge number four. Behold the red English plaid "The Delia" top by Priorities. I instantly fell in love with the details from the feminine ruffles to the steam punk type buttons.

Like every challenge so far, I put together at least a half a dozen outfits styling the top in a different way - upside down, tied at the waist, buttoned up, belted, etc. In the end, I decided to channel my Seattle roots and wear it simply unbuttoned over a charcoal mini dress and black leggings. However, to blend my style with a little New York City edge, I paired it with thigh high platform boots (one of my fall obsessions).

Through this challenge, I've learned that beauty can be your most important accessory, and even though I'm more of a chipped nails type of girl, I've enjoyed experimenting with synergies in my wardrobe and beauty choices. To complete my look for this challenge, I tried a new hair style that involved rolling the sides pack into a low, messy bun and my favorite hot coral lipstick.

When I opened the fourth item in the StyleList / Bluefly America's Most Stylish Blogger contest, I immediately began to laugh. The Priorities plaid blouse in the package was nearly identical to the shirt I had on. I knew I wouldn't have much trouble styling it.

Classic plaid was hugely popular last fall and winter, and it has only gained momentum this season. From gingham to buffalo, the checkered pattern is popping up everywhere. The traditional red variety always calls to mind two personas from opposite ends of the style spectrum: the prep and the punk. My style can be a bit manic, so both looks have a place in my wardrobe. Some days my outfits border on prim and proper; other days it's all about attitude.

This time around, I decided to go the edgy route. I could just have easily buttoned this ruffled shirt up to the throat and paired it with a high-waist skirt and schoolboy blazer. Instead, I borrowed a grunge-era trademark and wore it unbuttoned over a laid-back oversize tee. Ultra dark skinnies, a bejeweled layered chain necklace and taupe ankle booties keep it chic and modern.
Challenge #4 from Bluefly and Stylelist honestly had me the least bit of excited. The plaid wasn't the problem, I love a good classic, but the ruffles combined with plaid didn't excite me. So I thought, what would Chanel do? a fashion house that pride themselves on staying true to their timeless aesthetic while managing to make things fresh season after season. Of course- leather, it turns anything frumpy, chic.
There was also a smattering of walking metal art sculptures and candy colored confections with matching tights!

But while the designs tended to skew more funny than fabulous, not all was lost. There was a nod to the ever-so-prominent military trend (this is a communist country after all) and edgier silhouettes emerged with the sculpted shoulder jackets (a la Balmain).
My third style challenge from Bluefly.com and Stylelist.com is a Necessary Objects mini in a bold fuchsia hue. I wanted to create a sexy and modern look that would be perfect for either a girl's night out or a romantic dinner date. I decided to pair the vibrant mini with an ultra feminine, vanilla chiffon top adorned with a bow tie neckline. I combined two oversize vests for added balance and definition to my outfit. I completed the ensemble with sheer patterned stockings, edgy stilettos and a sequined clutch. This Necessary Objects mini skirt added a fresh of breath air to my outfit and I was ready for the night out!
Its november, I have half a haircut, my head and ears are freezing and you would never catch me in this pink skirt bluefly.com sent to me.

I attempted to dye it as dark as possible, flipped it over my head and turned it into a head scarf. I let it drape a little down in front and put on a coat in a mini cold front to shoot the photo.

Unsuccessful in dying it jet black but successful in turning a skirt into a multifunction wardrobe piece.
No color really speaks to me more than a lovely shade of pink. There's something so fun and deliciously girly about it, so I was delighted to find that Bluefly.com had sent over a Necessary Objects mini pencil skirt in just that color!

I scoured my closet for pieces that would balance out the va-va-voom vibe of the fitted, slip-on skirt. To put a modern twist on a classic look, I first chose a feminine cream blouse with a few cascading ruffles, then a short-sleeve collarless jacket with large gold buttons. Accessories, like black pointelle tights, simple lace-up oxford heels and an embellished cuff, completed the outfit.

I wanted to portray a look that was polished enough for work at a hip, young office, yet still downtown chic for grabbing after hours drinks with a friend. As any urban professional will tell you, comfortable pieces that can make a seamless transition from day to night are treasured finds! This Necessary Objects mini skirt, made of a soft stretchy poly knit, is definitely one of them and should be a staple in any working girl's wardrobe!
Bluefly and Stylelist challenge round three - a hot pink body con skirt. I instantly think to myself, Pretty Woman, minus the thigh-high boots of course. This piece needs balance, a body hugging basic spiced with a draped, vintage sequin blouse. Done. Toning down the hot pink hue would've been too easy, why not play it up with a little electric blue. Let's give them something to talk about.
Something this pink deserves to be paired with pieces that allow it to shine. As an anchor to this outfit, it's teeny and tight, so legs need to be matte, black, and look super-long with black lace-up booties. Topping things off with a DIY altered band jacket to add some kooky-sexy, this is the perfect outfit for that urban excursion or first date.

(DIY band jacket, white t-shirt, silver hammered bangles, silver and rhinestone wave rings, stretch elastic studded belt, Necessary Objects Pink Stretch Poly Mini Skirt, patent clutch handbag, tights, suede oxford booties)

Styling Tip: If you want to embrace a current trend, you don't need to go out and buy a brand new wardrobe. By looking at what you already have in your closet - and taking a trip to the sewing store - you can give many of your pieces a new life. Using funky trims, different buttons, padding, and safety pins, you can add or take away elements from your clothing...none of which need to be permanent alterations! For example, I wanted a structured marching band jacket but didn't want to buy it. Instead, I took a mandarin-collar cropped jacket I already had, and folded the hemline under, safety-pinning it to create that cutaway line. I pinned shoulder pads inside, and then stitched on some trim from the fabric store in a curlicue pattern. For all of $9, I had myself a brand-new jacket - one that I can convert back to the cropped collared jacket anytime the trend dies.

In just weeks, the holiday parties will be in full swing and women everywhere will spend countless hours deliberating what to wear to their upcoming events. I realize dressing for the holiday season can be overwhelming- before you feign the swine flu and decline all your invites- check out how I repurposed this hot pink Necessary Objects mini-skirt from Bluefly.com.

My goal was to illustrate how things that you already own can be styled together to create a fun new look. I hope to encourage and inspire you to discover new ways to repurpose items in your own wardrobe for their sparkling debut- technically encore but whatever- at your next holiday get together.

In this week's look, I repurposed a hot pink mini-skirt by Necessary Objects as a top in my holiday look. I paired it with a purple taffeta party skirt; with just a quick hemming this skirt was repurposed from its former life as a 1996 designer floor length ball skirt. The best time to add a little glitter is during the holidays, so I decided to bring in a little sparkle to my outfit. I paired a red-soled silver sequins stiletto with a striking rhinestone bauble bracelet/necklace set. As a final touch I added a funky animal print belt with a contrasting ornate gold buckle to give the outfit a little flair. My festive look is something I would wear to a fun cocktail party or maybe as my New Year's Eve ensemble.

This outfit illustrates how a few minors changes to pieces you might already own, paired with timely trends-pop of color, a statement necklace, animal print- and a little bit of sparkle can create a festive look without any of the guilt ridden purchases. Visit StyleList.com to find inspiration for your own holiday looks.
When I opened up the package for challenge #3, the Necessary Objects pink stretchy poly mini pencil skirt, I was a little frightened at first given hot pink is one of my least flattering colors. That said, I was excited to see it was a stretchy, pull-on mini skirt because that style can be pretty forgiving, not to mention versatile. Before deciding on my final look, I tried it on as a top, a one shoulder shrug and a hooded scarf...I probably could have done more. One of my favorite things to do on Clutch22 is reinvent from my own wardrobe by finding new ways to wear old pieces (e.g. a backwards dress, upside down cardigan, DIY projects, etc.).

The look I decided to go with involved wearing the skirt as it was supposed to be worn, but adding a thick black sash belt to cover the seam on the waist since it was a little bulky. I chose to wear a simple white beater tank with a long black cardigan and a chunky, colorful necklace to keep it from appearing too matchy matchy, color-block. I also decided to add sheer black tights to distance myself from the notorious look from my favorite Julia Roberts film circa 1990.

How would you style it? Check out my blog post on this challenge to see photos of the other looks I tried out before deciding on this one. This Necessary Objects knit mini-skirt, the third item in the Bluefly / StyleList America's Most Stylish Blogger contest, may fall into the "basics" category, but there is no doubt that it makes a bold statement. With its curve-hugging fit, cropped hemline and vibrant color, it demands a look with a wild side. To add some interest with pattern, I paired it with a laid-back black & white striped tee. The fitted cotton moto jacket and black biker boots up the cool factor. A strand of chunky beads and a pair of thigh-high socks complete this fun yet edgy look. I felt totally ready to see a live show or have a casual girls' night out.

The beauty of this skirt is in its simplicity, which makes it totally versatile. A ruffly shirt and some cute tights would make for a sweet, feminine look. A sharp blazer might add just enough polish for the office. A glitzy embellished top and a pair of fabulous pumps, and you're ready for a dinner date. Talk about a stand-out staple!
