5 Minute Makeup Make Over

Shantea loves makeup, but as a working mom with a 5 year-old daughter, she no longer has hours to spend on her look each morning. To help her balance her desire for glamor with the demands of her busy life, we asked Christine Fulwiler from Mally cosmetics to create a 5 minute makeup routine in place of Shantea's labor intensive, more evening appropriate style.

"Start with a good moisturizer, it's always important to have a good moisturizing routine as it makes all the difference when you apply your base or concealer" says Fulwiler. She also cautions that women should not skip their necks unless "you want to see a huge difference between it and your face later in life!"

According to Christine, like most African Americans, Shantea's skin is "gorgeous, resilient and dewy" which means she should stay clear of cream foundation or concealers because they'll make her face too shiny. Instead, apply a powder base with a large brush. For a full coverage look, use a sponge to apply the same powder.

Before applying eye color, Fulwiler recommends prepping your lids. "To get that really pretty wash of shadow prep with an eye shadow base or a concealer. It helps the color to be true and to last all day long especially if you have dewy skin."

For Shantea, Fulwiler selected a shimmery brown color palette that works well on most skin tones. For perfect eyeshadow "use a blender brush and apply in a windshield wiper motion back and forth, from lash line to crease."

To line the eyes Fulwiler recommends using "the same darker matte shadow you used on the crease of your lid for the liner applying with a definer brush. When applying make sure you get the shadow right against the lash line, some women leave a space between the lashes and the liner but that will make your eye look unfinished. "

Before applying mascara make sure to curl your lashes. After curling, apply two coats of "a product that is volumizing and has staying power. Water resistant, not waterproof because waterproof is the hardest thing to take off at night when you are exhausted and you don't want to deal with it!"

For your cheeks, use a combination of shimmer products to highlight and standard blush to contour. "The general rule of thumb is that if you have bigger cheeks, instead of focusing on the apple of the cheek you want to stay to the bottom," Fulwiler says. "If you have smaller cheeks, do a nice big apple." To find the right shade of blush for you, Fulwiler's best tip is to pinch your cheeks and try to match the shade.

For the lips, "go for a bright juicy color that isn't too intense but gives you a good pop of color. Lipstick is fine but it's a bit more modern to do a gloss" says Fulwiler. To keep your color from running try a clear, waxy lip liner and while there is no trick for keeping gloss on forever, a concealer prep on the lip extends the time between applications.

The result? A look that makeup artist Christine Fulwiler describes as "a universal palette that she can use everyday so she isn't sacrificing quality for speed, she will still get beautiful results and be out the door quickly." And if she wants to kick it up a notch for evening "just add black eyeliner and an extra coat of mascara."
