Seven days of Style: Nonliquid cosmetics that fly

Given the travel restrictions that ban all liquids and gels in carry-on luggage, you might wonder if you'll have to go with the "natural look" while flying -- sure you can pack and check your liquid foundation, perfume, mascara, and lip gloss, but who the heck checks luggage for a quick weekend hop to Vegas?!?!Not to worry, Glamour Globetrotter! Inspired by an article on USA Today, Styledash is here to pack your train case full of nonliquid cosmetics that are a-ok with the TSA.
- Monday - Monday morning, gotta brush away all the red wine and vodka/cranberry stains from the weekend, but toothpaste won't fly because it is considered liquid, even if it's not a "gel." The best invention of the last five years? Oral-B Brush-Ups, available for under $2 for a six-pack at any drugstore. And while you're at it, don't forget the floss.
- Tuesday - Facial cleanser is easy, just stick with a bar. Everyone's favorite Cetaphil comes in a bar format, and one of the most popular at the department store is Clinique facial cleansing bar. You can also go with cleansing cloths that are dry out of the package, but you moisten with water to activate and foam up the cleanser. Dove Cool Moisture cleansing cloths are $6 for a package of 30. That's enough for a two-week vacay!
- Wednesday - This one is tough. Moisturizer -- does it come in any format other than liquid? Your best bet here is to go with a cleanser that has pretty heavy moisturizing properties. Abovementioned, the entire line of Dove Cool Moisture will do a good job.
- Thursday - After the regular "clean-up" routine, it's time to actually apply your makeup, and what goes first? Foundation, of course. These days, though, you're going to have to go without, or else turn to a powder foundation. You can also make it easier on yourself overall and use a dual formula powder/foundation in a compact. USA Today recommends NARS, which can be applied sheer as a powder when dry, or for heavier coverage with a moistened sponge. It's $45 at Sephora. If the cost of your airplane ticket has cut into your budget, try Neutrogena Healthy Skin Cream Powder Makeup at the drugstore.
- Friday - Party time calls for dramatic lashes, but you're going to have to take cake mascara, over which you glide a moistened mascara wand. USA Today recommends La Femme's Cake Mascara, available at Amazon for $6.95. Paula Dorf also makes a cake mascara for $20.
- Saturday - Hitting the beach? Though you may be sitting under the shade of an umbrella, you still need to wear sunscreen! USA Today tips us off to SPF-50 bronzer from Avene Thermale. Because it's pressed into a compact, it's approved by the TSA. And why not go double duty? Make sure your powder foundation has SPF in it, too.
- Sunday - Time to head back, and you need a little refreshing scent to make that last leg of the trip. According to the TSA, moistened towelettes are fine, so look for any perfumed cotton cloths. Bvlgari has 12 towelettes for $25 at Sephora. Marc Jacobs also makes a perfume solid, $55.

All excellent advise. Now what about for men?? The best generic advise... if in doubt check it, don't carry it.
Also if you are travelling internationally you can buy from the duty free. Your purchases will be handed to you as you board therefore you will have cleared the gate check-in hurdle. BUT if you are connecting at an international airport for another leg, don't buy duty free in this country. It will be confiscated at your connecting gate.

THE BEST IDEA FOR TRAVEL IS TO FIND A AVON REP AND ASK HER TO GET SOME OF THEM SAMPLES OF PERFUME , THEY ARE WRAPED AND IN LITTLE TINY PADS , :)

All well and good, but the Oral B brush ups seem to have been discontinued -- neither CVS, Walgreens or Target carry them any more). Also, if you're flying out of the UK, you'll have to dump anything that resembles powder as well (something they don't mention anywhere until you get to security -- yesterday, I had to chuck all my eyeshadow, blush, and powder foundation, as I wasn't told about powder until I had my bags checked in). A good powder foundation if you're not traveling from the UK is the BareMinerals. Also, if you're traveling overnight, the moisture cloths work well, especially when combined with the BareEscentuals new revival nighttime product. Worked great. Plus, get a couple of bottles of water from the flight crew as you're getting on the plane!

I recently flew Detroit to Los Angeles to Las Vegas. I used two differnt airlines and I had the two sided mascara tube in my purse. It cleared TSA security four times without a hassel.

This comment is straight off the TSA website (www.tsa.gov):
"Some solid or powdered cosmetics items are permitted past the checkpoint; however, this is left to the discretion of the Security Officer."
In other words, what you get through security at one checkpoint may not make it through another. I think the best advice is still to just check it all! Or make sure that whatever you do try to get through in your carry-on, you're willing to part with when TSA says it has to go. And that you will then have time to go in search of replacements when you get to your destination.
Or maybe pack small travel size/sample items and check your luggage on the way to your destination. Then toss all the banned items before you head home if you want to avoid checking your luggage for the return flight.

I recently traveled from Los Angeles to Orlando FL. My son had a ear infection so I had his medicine which has to be refrigerated in a small cooler with ice to keep it cold. I had all the necessary paper work to proof that it belong to my son. The cooler whet through the scan machine and no one bother asking or even checking to see if it was really medicine what I was carrying, or even to make sure that I belong to the person that was traveling. I was not asked to even open the cooler. That really makes me wonder. Also I just got back from a quick get away to Las Vegas and I totally forgot to put away my lip gloss in my checked bag. Well it also went through scanning and they did not see that I had the lip gloss in by carry on purse. I notice when I has home and I was going through my purse looking for my car keys!

Talk about crazy....My daughter flew Southwest Airlines and in addition to having lipgloss and such in her backpack, She had an eight inch slender stun gun. She had forgotten to remove it. Know...doesn't that make you feel safe?

Better yet, so long as you're in the states, when arriving @ your destination, head for the nearest drugstore and purchase what you need in the smallest possible size or whatever size will fir your needs. Perfume? The copy things that say "if you like---, you'll love---". As for mosturizer, I have been using the tube of Cortizone 10 + Aloe for years and it is terrific. So maybe you'll spend $20 extra. Well worth it in saving time and aggravation.

Moisturizer DOES come in forms other than liquid/cream. Almay now makes a moisturizer in a solid stick, which you should be able to find in most drugstores for around $8-$10, and I just took it with me on a trip from NYC to Vegas with no problems.

A lot of handmade soapmakers are now making a product called Lotion Bars. These waterless lotions come in a stick form and are very skin friendly. Some even double as lip balms! Some soapmakers are also making shampoo bars too! Great for travel!

ya..I've flown quick trips, whats the problem with just checking in your bag(s)? instead of wasting extra time trying to find stuff thats acceptable to take IN the plane..use that time to check it all in and wait at baggage claim...most of the baggage claim ive been to is pretty quick...whats the deal with ppl not wanting to check in?

I need to inject myself in the stomach with a blood thinner called LOVENOX before flying to avoid blood clots. I recently traveled cross country on Continental Airlines, and I was hesitant to pack my syringes into my check on bag, because if it got lost or delayed, I could possibly die of pulmonary embolisms. I put the box of syringes into my purse, and it went through Xrays and nobody even flinched. What if I were a terrorist up to no good? What if the syringes were full of a drug that was lethal or explosive, or WHATEVER??? I even mentioned to the screener I had syringes in my bag and he just waved me through like he never heard me. SCARY, isn't it??

I flew last weekend and had not heard about the liquid and gel thing and it was no posten. I had to throw away lotion, hand sanitizer, mascara (3 tubes), 2 kinds of lip gloss. and some other stuff. It was really expensive! SO beware learn from my lesson.

Almost anything in the Bare Escentuals line is a powder and it is the greatest stuff anywhere. Can go on dry and lasts for ever, some goes on wet, if you like. Ulta also makes a mineral powder makeup.
What happened to checked baggage? Less junk to schlep through the airport and you just claim it at the end of the journey. If they "misplace" your luggage, they have to reimburse you for temporary clothes and cosmetics anyway.

One more thing............the Malie Kauai solid perfume is allowed on the airplane. It is perfect for flying. So many of my clients wear it, but it has been flying off the shelves due to the new airplane regulations. It is not a gel, nor a liquid. It is just a solid. Also, I sell a product which also happens to be one of Oprahs favorites it is something called Soap Pods I sell them in Green Tea and Lavendar. Perfect for the airplane. They are pieces of paper that when ran under warm water turn into warm sudsy yummy smelling soap that get your hands super clean. So you are not carrying a gel that you are not allowed to carry. This is just a solid cute little pod the sise of 2 quarters and little pieces of paper come out, the paper is a little bigger than the paper breath fresheners on the market. While it's easy to get toothpaste,and even shaving cream when you land....it is not easy to find decent deoderant...any ideas? I am going to start shipping essentials to my hotel...sample sizes so that I can use and leave behind. Any ideas?
