Big bag back problems

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Celebrities with Style

From celebrities like Jessica Simpson and Nicole Richie to everyday big-spenders on the streets of Manhattan, it seems like everyone has upgraded from the purse equivalent of the Cooper Mini to the H2 Hummer. But much like the toll the H2 Hummer takes on your wallet, these trendy gigantic handbags can do a real number on your back.

According to the New York Times, chiropractors and massage therapists have reported that the number of "handbag related back problems" have increased significantly in the past few months. The painful side effects of the big bag isn't so much about square footage, it's about what you carry in those hanging shoulder behemoths.

The larger the bag, the more stuff you carry in it. So is it any wonder then that this seasons' mondo bag du jour has become a major pain in the neck? In the most dramatic instances of "bag pain", overweight handbags have caused one shoulder to be higher than the other. The good news is that the pain should only be a temporary thing. For permanent back damage to occur, a handbag would need to weigh 50lbs or more.

Until the over-sized handbag trend subsides, style might just hurt a little more than usual.
