In response to the previous comment, "Curvey" does not necessarily mean "big".

Curvy is not always mean big. Big doesn't always curvey. Marilyn Monroe was big and curvey. She wore a size 14 dress that revealed her curves. Don't confuse the words.

I dont think that they meant big and curvy are the same thing, but if you ever saw the movie real women have curves you would definately see she was not a size six there

I'm pretty sure that a size 14 dress in Marilyn Monroe days was more like a 6 or 8 dress today.... some designers are making clothes bigger but putting the smaller sizes on them...to cater to our increasing body weights and sizes!!!

In response to Dan, Marilyn Monroe was absolutely NOT big. Just as an FYI, a size 14 in 1960 is not the equivalent of a size 14 today. It is quite wrong to perpetuate the myth that she was a fat woman. Here's some facts about Ms. Monroe:
Height: 5 feet, 5½ inches
Weight: 118-140 pounds
Bust: 35-37 inches
Waist: 22-23 inches
Hips: 35-36 inches
Bra size: 36D
In terms of today's standards, it is important to point out that although Elizabeth Hurley is a bit taller than Marilyn Monroe, her measurements and weight are the same. I don't think Liz Hurley is big either.

But what's her height? If she's only 5 feet, it's totally possible for her to be a six. A size 4 5' woman will be a lot curvier than a size 4 5'6" woman, for example.

I guess I would like to know, how tall is Ms. Ferrara? While I agree that she is not now either full figured or plus sized, it makes a big difference if she is 5'-5'2" and a size 6 or 5'6"-5'8" and a size 6. As I remember Meryl is a rather tall woman who at a size 8 would be considered thin.
What ever Ms. Ferrara's height and size she is doing a wonderful job playing "Ugly Betty" and I hope she keeps up the good work.

During the 1960's I was 5'7", 105 pounds and wore a size 6. Today, same height and 130 and my size a 4 or 6 depending on the cost. The more expensive the smaller the size! They just changed the sizes for vanity's sake!

A size 14 in 1960 is WAY different than a size 14 today. Clothing manufacturers have tweaked sizes so much to pander to our egos that a size 14 from 1960 doesnt even come close to the size 14 we wear today. I am so sick of all this fixation on size, weight, fashion, etc...etc....War on Christmas my ass....there's a War on Women that is perpetuated in the media and pimped by the "men" in our lives who think they all deserve air brushed "trophy wives" and it is going to be our undoing....or our daughters.

A size six, my goodness. I would consider that a small size. She is not a plus size woman, well, maybe in Hollywood where most women look like they are dying of starvation. Get real, real beauty is in the curves, or have we forgotten that we are women? I love "Ugly Betty" and America Ferrara.

I would really like to know the size of Jennifer Hudson. Now to me, that is a curvy, full-figured woman. She is beautiful and makes more sense for the average woman to be compared to. Just my opinion. No nasty comments necessary please. Just wondering.

I am sorry, but there is no way that she is a size six. I don't mean to belittle or mock her, as I very much admire her, but I think someone has altered the actual size of that dress. Perhaps to save face. I am a small 10 and I am quite a bit smaller than her. So, if she is a six, I have to be like a 2. I don't really think that this should be an issue though. We shouldn't be concerned with how "big" people our, we should be concerned with people who are too thin and are making themselves sick. Obviously, the woman can act. That's what matters. And to tell you the truth, I would rather have "larger" women on television so that us regular girls sdon't have to feel horrible about ourselves wacthing television and so that little girls can have realistic role models who encourage them to be themselves and love thier bodies, not matter what they look like.

Sizes have changed dramatically since the 70's. U had an old pair of size 7 pants from those days and a young friend tried them on. They fit, and she usually wore a 2. Back then we didn't have 2's.

Can we stand another comment about Marilyn Monroe's dress size? My mom recently passed on to me a skirted suit that my aunt had given to her in 1964. It's a beautiful wool suit, like something Jackie Kennedy might have worn. It's been only drycleaned (never shrunk). The label says it is size 12. In today's sizes I wear size 6, and the waistband is snug on me. How far will manufacturers go with vanity sizing? Eventually they will have to go into negative numbers for the smallest sizes. Today's size 4 is tomorrow's size -2. Now I am ready for vanity sizing for shoes. I'm tired of having big, size-9 feet. Let's move the sizes up, I want to have cute feminine size 6 feet. LOL!

When I was in my 30's and up to mid-40's, I weighed 145-150 pounds at 5'5". I always got compliments on my hour-glass figure, both from men and women. I do not recall all my measurements, but I do know my waist was 12 inches smaller than my hips and my bust size was about a 34-36 C-D. In today's world, I would be considered fat at that height and weight, but let me tell you, I did have a beautiful figure that looked 'womanly' in and out of clothes!!!
Women ARE built to have curves! If you starve yourself to look like a man...not bust, hips or curves at all...then you are only denying who in fact you are - a woman, not a man!
And if you are a man who can ONLY be with a rail-thin woman then I might suggest that you have homosexual tendencies. You might want to check into that men. There is nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, sexy or attractive about Nicole Ritchie and if you think there is (men out there) then you really need to examine your sexual preferences.

Yep, marilyn was indeed a size 14. If you tried to pass a size 14 off today as sexy...oh, sorry, i mean 'cuuurrvyyyy'...you'd probably be thought of as crazy. I can't believe America is a size 6, yet is allowed to exemplify America's larger women. Yeah, that definately explains why my teen daughter won't eat because she's a size 9. :::sigh:::
