Drugstore Beauty Queen: Dream Matte Mousse

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Steals and Deals

dream matte mousseThis week, I am doing a special series of Drugstore Beauty Queen posts -- Laying the Foundation.

Every woman has one, though it may be different for each woman. It's that one cosmetic -- whether it be lip gloss, blush, or mascara -- of which she will never find "The One." She will try a different brand, a different formula, a different shade every time, find it unsuitable, and try yet another one, only to be dismayed again.

For me, it's foundation. I swear I don't think I have purchased the same foundation twice. I try one, hate it, but use it until it's done because I can't bear to throw it away, then try something else. The only exception is a bottle of La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer and Foundation, but again, I didn't buy it a second time because who can actually afford to pay $165 for foundation?!?!

So this week, I will be sharing with you all my adventures through foundation (all drugstore, because I am convinced that there is a drugstore brand that will work) over the past two months. Do not worry. I do not wear that much makeup that I actually went through five bottles of foundation in two months. I just have five bottles of half-used foundation!

Today, it's Dream Matte Mousse by Maybelline, which runs about $8-9 in the drugstore. I have to hand it to Maybelline for their branding. The name "dream matte" alone made me want to buy it.

Color: Now the thing is, I am very fair skinned, so I almost always have to go for whatever is the lightest shade available. However, if I were actually trying to match my shade, I would have had a problem because it is very difficult to see the true color in the jar. Of course, this is always the problem with drugstore cosmetics. The one I chose, Classic Ivory, was a little too pink for me.

Coverage: "Dream" and "mousse" makes you think it's going to be super light, which it is with respect to its texture, but the coverage is actually fairly heavy. In fact, when you put it on, it almost feels "cake-y." Now here's a horrible secret, girls, I love heavy, heavy, almost studio-like makeup, so for me, this was fantastic. Most women i know, however, prefer a natural, light coverage, so this wouldn't work for them.

Conclusion: I would definitely buy this again if they had a color that better matched my skin. Otherwise, I'm still searching.
