Want some drugs with that fashion?
Filed under: Style in the News
Sisley is known for making some really racy ads, (to me their ads are more memorable than their clothing) but has this ad gone too far? The Fashion Junkie campaign shows two lovely models indulging in some recreational "fashion." The "fashion" is a slinky white dress that is supposed to represent a pile of cocaine.
Snort, snort -- isn't fashion fun?
I can't say I am shocked or even horrified by this ad (the ad kinda made me chuckle) because drugs have had such an influence on our culture lately. Celebrities waltzing in and out of rehab, drug- and alcohol-induced car wrecks, top models like Kate Moss being involved in various drug scandals -- if this ad was of models snorting lines off Pete Doherty, then I would be scared.
Love or hate it, this ad still isn't selling clothes (at least not to me). I can't really tell what they have on. I can tell, however, that the one on the left has her nipple hanging out and the one on the right is is about to overdose (look at those eyes). Scary.

Just read your "thoughts" on J. Love and wanted to call you an idiot over here on this blog as well.

The slinky white dress is actually a slinky white dress laid out to resemble cocaine - there's no powder in the ad. As a Fashion Marketing student, I think the premise is clever - whether or not it's appropriate is an entirely different topic.
Benetton (who owns Sisley) has also come forward to claim that the ads are fake, so it might be a good idea to add that info to this blog entry.

Yeah, nice comment needjewaske. People like you say Lauren Messiah shouldn't have anything negative to say, and yet, if she should say something that people disagree with, they call her vile names that are a lot worse than anything she writes.
Reality check:
1. Being overweight is not any "healthier" than being underweight. If it is, why is the medical community screaming about the "obesity epidemic" in this country?
2. Normal doesn't necessarily mean "heavy". I'm friends with and brother to plenty of women who aren't "heavy" or "curvy" and trust me, they're all "normal" and "real". They just happen to take care of themselves and stay in shape.
3. This is a fashion blog. That means there's good and bad. The same heifers screaming about "obesity discrimination" sit and paste plenty of crap about women who maintain a thin figure. It's ok to trash "skinny" women, but not "heavy" women?
4. This is still a free country. It's also a country where we have done our best to accept mediocrity. We try to normalize what we are to damned lazy to fix.
5. Part of what gives celebrities "fame" is their looks. They stay on top by mixing talent with appearance. After all, they're the Beautiful People, remember? So if we have to worship them when they look their best, why can't we knock them a little when they don't?
Take a break.

Benetton started this crap with their "clever" ads, and this just takes the sludge down to a new level in the sewer.

It's funny, later when these "models" grow up and have kids, and their kids are on drugs, they're going to be like, "Why is this happening to me?!?" Drugs are never clever or funny, and neither is causing future generations to be on them.

IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE WHAT SOME PEOPLE AT ANY COST TRY TO SELL OR PROMOTE FOR THAT MATTER IF IS NOT SEX IT'S DRUGS BUT IN ANY EVENT WE MUST BE CONSCIOUS ABOUT THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE RIGTHS TO EXPRESS THEM SELFS HOW EVER AND AT ANY COST . WE ON THE OTHER HAND THE CONSUMER HAVE THE POWER IN OUR WALLETS TO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCTS AND EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN ON SEX AND DRUGS AND TEACH THEM THAT SOME THINGS THAT APPEARS COOL CAN OFTEN DICRIBES SOMETHING ELSE AND SEND THE WRONG MESSAGE JUST LIKE THIS ADD WITH THE 2 MODELS AND THAT WHITE DRESS,LET'S EDUCATE MORE OUR KIDS ABOUT THE FACTS OF LIFE AND TAKE THE CRITISMS TO WHAT REALLY MATTERS; OUR KIDS EDUCATIONS OUR COMMUNITIES AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THESE ISSUES .I'AM IN DISBELIEVE ON WHAT THIS AD IS PROMOTTING BUT I STRONGLY AGREE THAT EDUCATING MY CHILDREN ON THESE TOPICS THEY TOO WILL HAVE A GOOD MORAL PRACTICES.

Only in America would some believe it fashionable to show two youngh women snorting like pigs in a sty. In what way is that fashionable?
We have become a nation of barn yard animals, eating slop and soiling ourselves. What the hell are we thinking?

How much longer are we going to stand by and say nothing about this type of thing. What next? Ads showing murder? I believe last year I saw an ad showing gang rape.

this is utterly discusting. The models look scarry as hell and to make drugs a part of an ad is not only tasteless, but morally inappropriate. Lets just go out and bye our children a bag of weed or better yet some cocane for their birthdays. "Jeeze Mom, I could look like that if I had that dress", says my sixteen year old daughter........Think about it !!!!!!

You see! You see! It is the race of people who delivered the contents of this disturbing substance to different countries and they are the ones to advertise it.

Am I supposed to be impressed with the fact that the model's nipple is showing, her roots badly need touching up, or the simulated cocained in both the nearby bag of powder and the dress? Freedom of speech is an important right in our country, and it incorporates the right of the media to print and show any materials as long as it is deemed unharmful to others. However, it is time that we take a stand against at least the most outrageous of the sleaze in the media. If you, by fellow reader, cannot concur with me based on moral principles, perhaps you can based on the fact that as an educator I have taught your children in the public school system for 30 years. Continually we have taught drug free programs to children. To say that ads like these are counterproductive is an understatement.

I don't think that this sends out a very good message to children and teens. This ad should be banned.

This is a simplistic ad trying to make a point that everyone already knows. Show me something profound and thought provoking- not something I see at my local club.
