Gap re-invents the wheel, again
In their tireless quest to exploit the fertile territory between casual and business casual, the Gap is rolling out yet another revolutionary new cut of blue jeans. The Hayes fit jeans are basically denim trousers, with side pockets, the wide leg, trouser hems, the whole 9 yards. They look pretty much like regular, subtly formal jeans to me -- with one fatal difference. Hayes fit jeans have a trendy cut that ensures that your won't wear them in two years, almost guaranteed. Buy these babies with caution: jeans cut like trousers are destined to go the way of cargo jeans, Jncos and, my personal favorite, acid washed jeans. Not to mention, the Gap isn't exactly the first company to think up this idea -- my grandfather has been rocking some Dockers jean/trousers since the 80s.
Here's the thing: great jeans get better with age. I still have the pair I was born in, and they've never looked better. That said, it's always a good idea to go for the classic 5-pocket look -- like some 501s. Why fool with perfection?
Buy these for $49.50

I had the same thought at you did. They look like what my grandfather would have called his "britches."
