Intervention: Jeff Tweedy

Filed under: Style in the News, Men

Oh my God. This hurts. This hurts, people.

You have to understand that I love Jeff Tweedy, front man of rock band Wilco, more than I love some people that I'm actually, like, related to. I love him. I am a HUGE Wilco fan and I love, love, love this man. This breaks my heart. Are you trying to break my heart, Jeff?

When I saw Jeff Tweedy solo in Austin he wore pretty much the same exact outfit both times, a dark blue button down shirt over dark pants. And it was the same pants and shirt both times. This is very similar to what he wore on solo shows depicted in the concert DVD Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest. This is kind of his "uniform," it seems. And while monotony 's not really appetizing, it's much better than what he chose to wear for Wilco's second performance on Saturday Night Live March 1st.

I don't know what drives Jeff's performance outfits -- if it's just that dark colors travel well, or that he wants to keep it simple but then shake it up with GIANT RED FLOWERS to keep us guessing -- but I would love to see him integrate these two extremes while remaining comfortable and retaining that laid-back vibe.

We could start out with a travel-friendly microfiber blazer ($179.99 from L.L. Bean) -- the microfiber doesn't wrinkle, so it travels well, plus a blazer makes everything look polished and goes with all sorts of bottoms from khakis to slacks to jeans. As for shirts, since you like button-downs we can go with these easy-care twill sportshirts from Roundtree and Yorke ($16-32, Dillards), available in several colors -- for a fair-complected guy with dark hair, he would look great in the deep red. These are easy-care shirts with a poly-cotton blend that'll help stop wrinkling. Or he could mix it up with a colored stripe look like these casual twill shirts from American Living by JC Penney for $39.99.

Jeff Tweedy's flamboyant suit may be jarring but injecting a little color into his wardrobe shouldn't be. Everything in moderation, Jeff. As for the flowers....nip those buds. Please.
