Vogue: Lebron and Gisele cover controversy

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Who would have thought that just a month after Vogue was patting itself on the back from breaking down racial barriers by inviting Lebron James to be the first black man ever to grace the magazine's cover, the editors at Vogue would be taking fire for being racially insensitive? The cover, as many people pointed out -- including us here at Styledash -- featured the superstars in a pose that reminded us of Jane and Tarzan. Now, I do agree that the cover does kinda suck, but mainly on the grounds of taste.

The controversy is not over whether or not the cover looks stupid -- because it definitely does -- but whether the cover perpetuates racial stereotypes by depicting Lebron as a huge hulking beast of a man that resembles King Kong holding Fay Wray captive. Fay Wray in this case would be Gisele.

There are a few problems with this interpretation to me. First, Lebron James is a huge hulking beast of a man and apparently he's happy with the cover. He's been quoted as saying: "Everything my name is on is going to be criticized in a good way or bad way... Who cares what anyone says?" Second, everybody knows that Lebron is just showing us his game face. Third, Gisele is not screaming in horror, she's smiling and laughing.

I find it hard to believe that Vogue has a secret agenda of trying to perpetuate racial stereotypes. Maybe the controversy would sell a couple of extra copies, but I doubt it would be worth the hassle. Not to mention, Annie Leibovitz took the pictures, and I don't think she has anything to gain from coming off as a bigot.

I'm not sure why no one has seized on the opportunity to point out that if Gisele is being depicted as Fay Wray, then Vogue is also perpetuating the sexist stereotype of the damsel in distress. Even worse, it looks like she's enjoying her oppression.
