Tim Gunn beats Stacy London

Filed under: Style in the News

If your wardrobe is a reflection of your true self, it stands to reason that a messy, outdated closet equals inner turmoil.

This will come as no surprise to anyone who ever watched Tim Gunn's Guide to Style on Bravo, or TLC's What Not To Wear. The transformation on each episode is always accompanied by tears and high emotions.

Here's the question. Your life is being dissected in front of TV cameras, presumably for the viewing enjoyment of millions. Which "therapist" would you prefer to experience:

Stacy London screeching at you, all "Oh! My! God! You do not still have acid washed jeans!!!"

or...

Tim Gunn gently explaining, "Instead, a nice dark wash jean with a wider leg will skim your hips, in a way that defines and flatters your shape."

Uh, obviously the answer is Tim.

I always feel sorry for the What Not to Wear makeovers, who get sent shopping all alone, while Stacy and Clint watch and cackle like fashion's Statler and Waldorf. When they finally swoop in, it's all hand swatting "Never touch vests!" and "Go put on this wrap dress!" Plus Stacy perpetually seems ready to interrupt and make Clint brush her hair.

Contrast that with Tim and Veronica on Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. They give their subjects a simple list. Surprise them with a supportive friend or family member to keep them company while shopping. Miss Lemon Zest Veronica can be a bit of pill, but Tim so consistently takes the high road that we all follow his example.

You can be darn sure that Tim is first person I'll call when I finally want order and sanity in my life and wardrobe. Stacy...well, maybe we can go shoe shopping and have cocktails with lunch, and leave it at that.
