Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Ask StyleList, Celebrities with Style

After a post on one of the seasons hottest trends -- gladiator sandals -- StyleList received the following comment:

Not sure what to wear with my new gladiator sandals. They come up to the knee, and they're the Stuart Weitzman gold ones. Sharp!

Yes, sharp indeed, but we can't have them sitting alone in your closet being sharp, can we? These are some fierce shoes, and I understand the reader's hesitation in trying to wear them with the wrong outfit -- it could be disastrous. So, here are some suggestions for what she might want to pair with her completely fabulous new shoes:

Truth be told, with a serious shoe like this, you'll have the most luck wearing them with a knee-length or shorter loose fitting dress. If you're wearing some short, sexy shorts and a dressy cami, you might be able to pull them off (and if the shoes didn't go to the knee, you definitely could rock that look), but a dress is pretty safe.

Many celebrities are pairing their funky gladiators with a short, simple dress, like Mary-Kate Olson here (ignore the giant furry bag). The shoes have so much going on that you don't want your outfit to be competition. Since yours are gold, a cream colored knee length dress would look gorgeous, but you could glam it up with a swingy black dress and some gold hoops, too.

Katie Holmes sports her gladiators with a more flowing frock, which makes for a nice dichotomy of innocent versus dominatrix. You could totally get away with this in just about any color with the gold
