Make your own Kentucky Derby hat

However, not everyone can afford to spend $100 or more on a hat that might not be worn more than once, especially if it's just for a party and not for the Derby itself. In that case, you might want to create your own hat.
If you're interested in making your own hat, why not invite some friends over and make an event out of it? Serve up some tasty, traditional Southern treats and get to work!
Your best bet is to get a firm straw hat -- firm so that it will hold its shape, and straw because its easier to decorate using the weave. Make sure it has a big, wide brim for maximum effect.
You can use ribbons, lace, feathers, buttons, flowers, and veils -- whatever strikes your fancy. Just be sure to try out your placement of the items before making it permanent.
Use craft glue to attach your ribbons or lace around the base of the hat, and use your finger to smooth out wrinkles and excess glue. Add the largest flowers first, and allow the glue for each decoration to dry before adding another. Extra ribbons, buttons, and smaller flowers will finish up the look.
