Indie Designer Interviews: Liliputians NYC hip handmade children's clothes

Filed under: Interviews, Kids and Babies

Liliputians NYCWe love all of the amazing independent designers out there. In order to find out more about just what makes all of these creative types tick, we present to you an ongoing segment called Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's interview is with Heather Flottmann, the designer and owner of Liliputians NYC, a hip, indie clothing label specializing in custom, boutique children's clothes (particularly birthday outfits for boys and girls).

Tell us a little about yourself and your company. My line of handcrafted items reflects my love of bright colors, vintage design, art, and whimsical themes. In addition, all my creations are heirloom quality, limited editions or even one of a kind.

How did you get started designing children's clothing? The concept for the liliputians label was born in NYC on May 12, 2004 with the arrival of my daughter Lily Belle. She is the inspiration, and she is my muse. Liliputians became a reality about a year later with the completion of the Liliputians NYC web site. Although Liliputians started as a part-time venture, it has grown just as my daughter has and is now a full-time proposition and continuing to grow.

Liliputians NYCAny advice you would give to aspiring designers? Find something you LOVE to do ... something that you could do 24/7 because you will be! Also don't expect immediate results. Building a web site is a ton of work, but that's really where it just begins. Be prepared to spend even more time getting people to your site and the accompanying sales. Don't give up!

What inspires your work? My background is in art history so fine art (such as Frida Kahlo) definitely is a big influence. Pop culture (think Marilyn Monroe) is also very relevant in the liliputians line; Americana, pin-up girls, kitschy themes like garden gnomes, or 50s era fabrics. I love and am inspired by vibrant colors which is VERY apparent in the entire eclectic liliputians line.

Who is your favorite designer? Made With Love by Hannah

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? funky, bright and unusual handbags and shoes (such as the pair of Lucky Lou hand carved Lucky Charm heels I just bought) & my perfectly fitting Lucky brand jeans.

Where can people find your work? I love my retailers! In addition to my online store, Liliputians designs are sold at several brick and mortar stores around the world as well as at many online boutiques. You can find the full list here.
