Tip of the day: How to avoid summer makeup meltdown

Filed under: Cosmetics, Style Tip of the Day

Most of us love the summertime – the sun, the beach, the warmth, the runny makeup... okay, so maybe we don't love all of it. When the weather is hot and you're sweating your face off literally, it is time to readjust your makeup routine so you don't look like a hot mess for the next three months.

Use summer shades.Popsicle or sunset colors, a bronze glow, or soft, subtle pastels are always in. If you remain fair, sheer colors work well and if you're dark, rich hues should be your go to.

Now let's take a look at just how to apply those fun colors.

• Skin: Go easy on skin prep. Cover-up only where necessary (under eyes, around nose, and blemishes) and dust on a powder foundation. Anything heavier and it will slide right off your face. There are so many formulas out right now that also offer SPF protection.

• Eyes: Keep your eyes light -- not color wise but how much you apply. Sweep on one layer of shadow only. Go bold with a bright pop (yellow, fuchsia, or orange) or keep it minimal with a skin toned shade.

If you want to play around with liner, make sure that it is a gel formula. They are waterproof so you can't sweat them off no matter how hard you try.

Mascara is where you can get a little wild, especially if you go for it in a colored version. Apply one, two, or even three coats in a colored formula if you want an attention grabbing look. If not, a swipe of good old black or brown will be just as good.

• Cheeks: In the winter blush gives a healthy glow. In the summer, we have that flush naturally. Be light handed with blush and use a gel or cream formula. Powder will just sweat off and streak – double ew!

• Lips: Lips are another place where you can get a little crazy if you want. Juicy lips are always sexy, especially with a clean face and a little swipe of mascara. Plus, the look only takes 5 minutes to pull together and you're out the door. Look for yummy colors like peach, shell pink, or watermelon.

L'Oreal's HiP Line has great cream and gel based blushes, shadows, and liners. The blends come in a variety of shades to suit any skin tone as well. Their Colour Juice lip gloss is 100% perfect for hot weather too. It's an inexpensive way to pick and play with your summer makeup looks.

My friend, your face is officially summer proofed!
