Gladiator sandals go high-tech

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Shoes, Men

Every once and awhile, you come across footwear that is both hideous and spellbinding -- the kind you wouldn't be caught dead in, but at the same time you're also dying to try them on to see what they feel like. That kind of sums up our reaction to Raf Simons' new Astronaut High Sandals.

We knew that gladiator sandals were getting popular with trendsters, but we had no idea that astronaut sandals were getting in on the action. In fact, before today, the astronaut sandal was a foreign concept. They're made up of things we like -- leather and velcro straps -- but somehow we don't really like them as a whole. Maybe we're just not ready for futuristic space-gladiator styles, or it could be that patent leather doesn't mix well with bare feet and purple velcro.

Still, they look like they would be super-comfortable and give lots of ankle support for hiking and gladiating. Priced at a whopping $1,250 at SEVEN New York, we'll wait to try on some knockoffs.
