Book Review: "Edward Steichen In High Fashion"

Students of photography know that some of the most stunning examples of the craft come from advertising work. Edward Steichen In High Fashion is literally a beautiful illustration of this truth.
Although Steichen might not exactly be a household name, his subjects were. In his distinguished career, which included 15 years as the chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair, he snapped stars like Greta Garbo, Fred Astaire, Gloria Swanson and Charlie Chaplin.
Marion Morehouse, his favorite model, is also well represented here, along with a cast of designers that would make any fashion student weep: Chanel, Schiaparelli, Lanvin, Patou...you get the (very glamorous) idea.
Published by W.W.Norton & Company, the book is a companion to a traveling exhibit of Steichen's fashion photography and celebrity portraits. Included are more than 200 images from the Condé Nast archives, as well as introductory essays from the curators.
It's a little early to be thinking about holiday gifts, but this book would make a great present for anyone (including yourself) who loves fashion, photography and art deco glamor, especially if you can't make it to the exhibition.
