Aveda helps to 'green' NY Fashion Week

Filed under: Runway Trends, Fashion Week, Green Fashion

As fabulous as Fashion Week is, there is one downside -- it creates extra waste. However, Aveda is working to change that. For the third consecutive season, the environmentally-minded company is teaming up with major designers to reduce the environmental impact of their shows.

Designers partnering with Aveda are Rodarte, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Preen and Alexander Wang, all of which have taken these four eco-friendly steps:
  • Replace bottled water with NYC tap water in non-toxic aluminum SIGG bottles, provided by Aveda;
  • Eliminate use of fur in show and in all stores;
  • Serve organic, locally-sourced food backstage, provided by City Bakery for Aveda;
  • Print all programs and invites on post-consumer recycled paper.
And Aveda doesn't stop there. Next week's shows will serve as an official kick-off of Aveda's 30th Anniversary and the Aveda Caps Recycling Program. The SIGG bottles Aveda provides during Fashion Week will sport the tagline "Kick the Cap Out of Oceans Plastic."

Plastic caps are generally not accepted for recycling, and Aveda will create their new bottle caps from 100 percent recycled plastic caps, which is something that's never been done in the beauty industry. After Fashion Week, Aveda will continue to accept plastic caps for that cause.

Additionally, Aveda will offer a fleet of eco-friendly pedi cabs for models, designers, and media to use for transportation to and from the shows. The fleet will also transport guests to the Aveda's Fashion Week kick-off party on September 4.
