Indie Designer Interviews: 144 Collection Handbags

Filed under: Handbags, Vintage and Retro, Interviews

144 Collection handbags and pursesWe love all of the amazing independent designers out there. In order to find out more about just what makes all of these creative types tick, we present to you an ongoing segment called Indie Designer Interviews.

We'd like you to meet handbag designer Lesia Griffin of 144 Collection. Lesia creates one-of-a-kind custom handbags and accessories as well as limited edition bags in a variety of eye-catching prints and styles.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work. My name is Lesia Griffin and I am the owner & designer of 144 Collection. 144 Collection specializes in one-of–a-kind and limited edition handbags and accessories. The collection boasts quality retro and vintage fabrics that will set customers apart from everyone else. We have been fortunate to be in business for over 2 years now.

How did you get started as a designer? I started sewing lessons a few years ago as a way to relax while allowing me to express my creative side. As I continued my lessons, I found a great teacher who taught me about fabrics and also pattern making. I always had a fondness for bags (as does almost every woman), so those are the first things I began making with patterns I created.

144 Collection totes, handbags and pursesAny advice you would give to aspiring designers? I would have to say don't be afraid to experiment with different design concepts and sewing techniques. Research all of the aspects of running a business if you do decide to go into business for yourself. There are plenty of resources such as the Small Business Administration (www.sba.gov). Also, be persistent when it comes to getting your brand out there.

What inspires your work? I'm inspired by a lot of things but I would have to say shapes and fabric are the two big things. I'm always looking around to see if there is a different shape I can incorporate into a bag. I am always looking for a fabric print that really stands out.

Who are your favorite designers? Reem Acra, Donna Karan, Sumie Tachabana, Amy Butler, and Angela Adams.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? I'm very basic when it comes to fashion. I love a good pair of jeans and a t-shirt. As far as beauty products go, I have to say my Bobbi Brown Lip tint Lip gloss, Bobbi Brown Mauve Face Palette, and Neutrogena Oil-Free Facial Scrub are my constant companions.

Where can people find your work? 144 Collection handbags and accessories are available at retail stores Candy Plum Boutique and Sai One Boutique. We can be found online at 144Collection.etsy.com, My Bonnie and Clyde, and The Pear Project. Internationally at Blush Bags, Six One Six Boutique and Strawberry Jam.

Anything else? Thank you for this opportunity to showcase something I really love doing.
