Indie Designer Interviews: Prisma

We love all of the amazing independent designers out there and we wanted to find out more about what makes these creative types tick. If you do too, check out more of our Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's featured indie designer proves that you're never too young to start pursuing your dreams. In addition to studying for a degree in business, 17-year-old Brenna Horton already runs an online shop called Prisma, where she sells her adorable polymer clay jewelry & felt accessories.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work. My name is Brenna Horton, though I am often (incorrectly) called Breanna or Brenda by strangers. I am a seventeen year-old college student studying for a two-year degree in Business Administration. What I create & sell has deeply affected what I want to do in college as I'd love to own my a brick & mortar shop one day. My shop is called Prisma and I sell polymer clay jewelry, felt accessories and toys, & other little things. When I get enough courage to use my sewing machine more I hope to sell handmade clothing!

How did you get started as a designer? There are two occasions, actually. Once, I saw a tutorial on DeviantArt on making polymer clay charms and tried it out. Another day I came across the awesome seller, lupin, on Etsy selling felt brooches. I have improved greatly since then!

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? Believe in what you do & be happy with it. If you're unhappy with something, then fix it if you can.

What inspires your work? Just about everything. I love Japanese culture so that affects my work greatly. I love color & combining different ones together into one piece.

Who are your favorite designers? sparklerama, lupin, stoopidgerl, fatamerican, desirapesta, AliciaBock, & many others on Etsy.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? Vintage clothes & jewelry! I can't stand all the horribly stereotypical teenage clothes that I see everywhere. I never wear make up so I don't have anything on beauty.

Where can people find your work? I sell on Etsy under prisma. You can find my Etsy shop at http://prisma.etsy.com/ I will hopefully be opening my own website, too!
