Indie Designer Interviews: Fotini Designs

Fotini Designs necklaceWe love all of the amazing independent designers out there and we wanted to find out more about what makes these creative types tick. If you do too, check out more of our Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's featured indie designer is Fotini, a native New Yorker who draws inspiration for her original jewelry from the sights and sounds that surround her in NYC as well as long summers spent in Greece.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work. I am an independent jewelry designer based out of NYC. I hand make all designs myself. My designs are fun, funky and feminine.

How did you get started as a designer? While working in publishing, I was craving a different creative outlet and stumbled across a jewelry design class at a local YMCA. That was 8 years ago. I have since left publishing, taken a bunch of other workshops and classes, and then worked for other 3 other jewelry designers over the years. And just last year decided it was time to put stuff out there, and see if others are drawn to my designs as much as friends and family have been over the years.

Fotini Designs What inspires your work? It's crazy how inspiration happens at the most random time (that's why I carry a small sketchbook in my purse). It can be anything, from nature (leaf patterns, flowers, coral) to fashion, even architecture.

Who are your favorite designers? Prada is one of my favorites, I wish I could afford more. Spirer Jewelers has some sculptural designs.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? Red patent leather peep-toe pumps, a piece of bold jewelry and
Loreal's beach plum lip gloss.

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? I haven't been in business for myself for too long, so i don't have much in the way of practical advice. But I can say do what you love, hone your craft and your passion will shine through.
