Dee-Zigns Handcrafted Jewelry & Accessories

Filed under: Accessories, Interviews, Must Haves

We are firm believers in the power of bold, funky jewelry to help brighten up a basic outfit. What better way to make a plain white t-shirt and jeans pop than with a colorful beaded necklace? The same holds true for your little black dress and so many other outfits. It's why we can't help but love the simple but fun jewelry designs of Toni D. Johnson, the designer behind Dee-Zigns Handcrafted Jewelry & Accessories.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work. I design and create every piece of jewelry and accessory item you'll find at Dee-Zigns Handcrafted Jewelry & Accessories - every piece is original and handmade by me, one at a time. My favorite components include colorful and organic gemstones, pearls and sterling silver. I'm a wife, work-at-home-mom, business owner and animal lover.

How did you get started as a designer? From a family of artistic individuals, I was always envious of their talent and ability. My sister had beaded for years, so when I asked her to make me a special bracelet, she showed me how to do it myself and I've been hooked ever since. This happened shortly after I had my second child and I needed a way to channel my artistic thoughts and ideas, aka "I needed something for me!" I liked the originality and detail in the pieces I created for myself. People started noticing my jewelry and asking where they could purchase it and so begins the same story as many other designers. Family and friends encouraged me to sell them and start my own business. In 2006 I launched my website www.deezignsjewelry.com to reach a broader audience.

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? Plan, research and be prepared to work (and work and work) but above all be passionate about what you are doing. Get organized in your office or studio and keep it organized so that you can work smart. Always listen to your customers and take care of them. And above all believe in yourself.

What inspires your work? Life and living and definitely the beach.

Who are your favorite designers? Love Chanel and Diane Von Furstenberg and I find Isaac Mizrahi fascinating. He's accomplished so much in his young life and I love his sense of humor. I'm a huge fan of every independent designer who puts their heart and soul into their work and is passionate about it.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? Good fitting clothes, especially black pants and a white shirt - they are staples in my closet - shoes and more shoes, mascara, lip gloss and Dee-Zigns Jewelry.

Where can people find your work? On my website www.deezignsjewelry.com and also at the retail marketplace for the Atlanta Craft Mafia at Irwin Street Market in Atlanta, GA.

Anything else? I'm thrilled to be taking metalsmithing classes and look forward to seeing how my designs will evolve.

We love all of the amazing independent designers out there and we wanted to find out more about what makes these creative types tick. If you do too, check out more of our Indie Designer Interviews.
