Oblinaknit - Handmade Totes, Knits and Jewelry

Not only does she make some killer handmade totes and accessories, she's also got a gorgeous line of hand-created jewelry. We chatted with her to find out more about it.

How did you get started as a designer? I have always made things for myself, and also enjoy giving unique, handmade gifts (whether from myself or another indie business owner), so when I made the decision to leave my 'career' job due to stress and waning interest, I decided to take the plunge and do something I love -- sewing, knitting, jewelry are top on my list -- and start my own business. I love doing craft shows and meeting people -- it's not just about selling, it is also about seeing what people like. You can gather a lot of information and ideas at shows -- mostly from customers stopping by to browse and chat -- it's a great way to get out and meet people and market yourself.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? Anything from Kiehls is a must-have in my book.

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? Find something you love to do and keep at it. I still work a day job as an office manager, but it is much less stress than what I was doing before. Plus it's a 9-5 weekday job that I leave at the office when I go home, so I have a lot more time to create!

Where can people find your work? I have an online shop on Etsy: www.oblinaknit.com and also consign and wholesale at a few shops.

Anything else? I have to mention my cat Ken who models for me and is my logo. He loves the camera and is willing to put on a hat or dog sweater and strike a pose. My other cat Dahlia is more interested in food so she is not much for modeling, and she usually tries to back out of anything I put on her.

We love all of the amazing independent designers out there and we wanted to find out more about what makes these creative types tick. If you do too, check out more of our Indie Designer Interviews.
