American Apparel in Trouble Again - Cited for Using Illegal Workers

Filed under: Style in the News

There's a reason American Apparel's clothing is often out of this world -- allegedly numerous employees who manufacture the clothing are working illegally in the United States.

WWD reports that as many as one-third of the workers at American Apparel's Los Angeles production facilities aren't authorized to work in this country. The U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency held an inspection of the facilities early this year, and just now released the results to the clothing company.

While, of course, this could all just be chalked up to some HR mistakes, American Apparel is far from being a stranger to controversy. Aside from its provocative ads, the company just settled a lawsuit with Woody Allen for using his image (below) without permission.

Additionally, CEO Dov Charney is well-known for being an outspoken advocate for immigration reform. According to WWD, he's used his brand to sell T-shirts supporting the cause and has even put up advertising billboards to publicize the need for change.

Michelle Obama, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon - Savvy Shoppers?

It's no wonder celebrities look like a million bucks -- they've often spent a decent portion of that to get their clothes!

However, some stars seem a little more savvy than others when it comes to shopping for good deals, and the curious folks at Shop It To Me (the free online personal shopper that scopes out sales so you don't have to) asked women which celebrity they thought was the savviest shopper.

Look for Less: Kate Moss

Ditch the basic black blazer for something a bit more, well, summery! A simple lightweight blazer in a cool gray or chic navy can be paired with white or light wash jeans for a refreshing look. Take a cue from Kate and add a boxy black satchel and/or exotic-skinned platforms for some extra kick.

Over 900 women voted on whom they perceive to be the most savvy, and shocker!, Michelle Obama earned a spot high up on the list, coming in second.

Reese Witherspoon took top honors, while Jennifer Aniston and Rachel Bilson tied for third place. However, when asked which celebrity women they wanted to shop with, Aniston was first, followed by Witherspoon. The First Lady didn't make the top five in that category.

(We feel obligated to point out, however, that although these women are viewed as savvy shoppers, that doesn't mean they skimp when it comes to style.)

Heidi Klum Isn't Cheap, and Neither Is Her Perfume

Heidi Klum put a lot into her fragrances -- she told the Daily Star, "My perfumes carry my name to show I am fully behind them. I created them from A to Z. The scents carry my handwriting."

So, it's no wonder she didn't take kindly to a German-based internet vendor selling those scents at a serious discount on eBay.

AHN reports that she's suing the vendor for £100,000 in compensation, claiming the it is cheapening her brand. The vendor, predictably, is fighting the allegations and is expected to appear in court on July 14.

Simon Cowell and Topshop Owner to Team Up

Filed under: Style in the News

Two of the most successful men in Britain have decided to join forces to create an entertainment company to rival the media and marketing giant that is Disney, reports Daily Mail.

Simon Cowell, known for his role on "American Idol" and a predilection for extra-tight shirts, and Sir Philip Green, who owns a number of the U.K.'s largest retailers (including Topshop), have been buddies for close to a decade but only now decided to become business partners. The plan, according to WWD, is to market shows across the U.S. and Europe, then do heavy merchandising to capitalize on the hit shows.

Green, who has never worked in showbusiness before, will keep his retail business separate from the joint venture (good thing -- the last thing we need in the dressing room is to think of Simon Cowell and his scathing remarks!). The billionaire will focus on finances, while Cowell, whose contracts are up at Sony and American Idol, will use his experience in the entertainment industry to oversee production.

Purse Too Heavy? Get the Lead Out

Filed under: Style in the News

Is possible lead in purses the breaking point for retailers? Photo: Getty Images

We've worried about lead in toys, and of course, in paint, but now according to the Center for Environmental Health in Oakland, Calif, we have to beware of lead in our purses, too.

SFGate reports that the group filed suit yesterday (June 24) against 16 retailers (including popular retail chains including Target, H&M, Forever 21, and Kohl's).

At least 26 brands are accused of manufacturing products (mostly made of vinyl or faux leather) that contain a level of lead high enough to pose a health risk when touched or handled. Lead poses a particularly dangerous for pregnant women and young children.

Abigail Breslin's Look - Too Grown Up?

Abigail Breslin has always seemed wise beyond her years -- in interviews, she comes across smarter and more articulate than half of her adult co-stars.

She has also managed to successfully bridge the gap between little girl and glamorous movie star on the red carpet.

At least, she had until now. The 13-year-old's most recent red carpet look at the New York City premiere of "My Sister's Keeper," is considerably more adult than what we're accustomed to seeing her in and so not what we would expect from Breslin.

Undeniably, she looks beautiful. The light lavender, draped chiffon dress is right on-target, fashion-wise, and her metallic heels perfectly compliment her frock.

Jennifer Lopez No Longer Selling Fashion Line in U.S.

Jennifer Lopez generally stays one step ahead when it comes to business, so we think she's probably making a smart move by calling it quits with her last remaining U.S.-based apparel brand, Sweetface, according to WWD. The spring '09 collection is in stores now, but this marks the end of any Jennifer Lopez-branded apparel in the United States.

Brüno GQ Cover Treated as Pornography in Chicago

Filed under: Style in the News

Aside from making some readers mildly uncomfortable, what harm can Brüno's nude GQ cover do? One newsstand in Chicago isn't willing to find out. The New York Times reports that the newsstand used blinders (the black panels that often hide the covers of traditional nudie mags) to hide Brüno's body.

But what about Jennifer Aniston's naked cover last year, you ask? Well, although this particular Chicago newsstand left it out there for the world to see, another high-profile newsstand did not -- the main newsstand in Grand Central Terminal covered up Ms. Aniston's flawless figure.

Kate Gosselin's Extreme Transformation

Kate Gosselin found a place in America's heart as the mom of eight (sextuplets and twins) on TLC's reality series "Jon & Kate Plus 8."

We watched her go from soccer mom to media darling -- with a trim figure and sassy 'do to boot.

Now, she'll be facing her biggest transformation yet -- becoming a single mom.

As reported by People magazine, the reality show parents have filed for divorce. The couple also made the big announcement on last night's episode.

This will undoubtedly be a tough time for all involved (and there are many involved), but if there's one thing that won't get lost in the shuffle, it's Kate's style.

Check out just how far she's come in the style evolution (below).

Kate Gosselins Style Evolution

Kate Gosselin shows off her extremely pregnant body in this undated family photo. She leapt into stardom after giving birth to sextuplets in May, 2004.

Back in 2004, Kate Gosselin was just a mom. A mom who had twins and had just given birth to sextuplets, sure, but otherwise, just a regular person. With very regular style.

    Daniel Shanken, AP

She's hardly recognizable as the woman we've been seeing on the tabloid covers lately -- the dark hair (and lack of flashbulbs going off all around her) really changes her look.

Four years later, Kate had undergone a tummy tuck and gotten a major makeover. Hey, if you were going to be in the spotlight nonstop, wouldn't you?

Just last year, she and Jon were the picture of suburban happiness, with preppy clothes and a house full of adorable children. And a hit TV show, of course.

    TLC

In fact, in October 2008, the couple renewed their wedding vows in a fabulous and romantic ceremony.

However, 2009 seems to be the beginning of the end of their relationship. But not Kate's style! She's one hot mama, and now that she's single, watch out!

Kate's learned that, just because the show's cameras are off, that doesn't mean the paparazzi will give her a pass. She keeps casual and cool with comfy clothes that fit and flatter. And you know what? Ball caps, when not worn all the time, are a fun way to hide a bad hair day.

Victoria Beckham - To Blame for Nipple and Tuck Surge?

Filed under: Style in the News

Did Victoria Beckham know that stepping out with very perky (and very visible) nipples would spark a plastic surgery frenzy?

It's not entirely her doing, but Daily Mail reports that London's Harley Medical Group found, over the past year, nipple surgeries rose 30 percent. That's some serious growth!

Prosthetic nipple sales (like those worn by Samantha in "Sex in the City") have seen an increase as well.

Harley Medical Group's Dr. Riccardo Frati thinks that celebrities are the reason women are so much more interested in the appearance of their nipples as of late.
