Fold your shirts quickly and perfectly with cardboard

I'm pretty particular about the way I fold my shirts, and it usually takes me a minute or two to either get it right, or just give up and throw it in the closet. But here in this video you see that with a few scraps of cardboard and a little effort, folding your shirts can be quite simple. Then again, it seems a little over the top to actually construct something like this just to fold shirts.

If you do end up actually building a replica of this ingenious cardboard contraption, please let me know (and send pictures of it). And if something like this truly interests you, but you're not exactly crafty, then check out the $10.99 Perfect Fold Garment Folder over at Amazon.com and save yourself some trouble.

The holy grail of hard drives

Now that digital cameras and digital music players have been popular for several years, people are beginning to need a place to store and back up all of their data. External hard drives are all the rage now, and they've become incredibly affordable. For the most part, though, these massive storage devices aren't very appealing to the stylish.

That's where the LaCie Golden Disk comes in. This external hard drive is made of a gold-colored metal, and it's an "inspiring, luxurious design" according to their Web site that is certainly quite unique. The top panel has a wavy, liquid-like design, creating an interesting look for your desktop. It was designed by Ora-Ïto, who has also designed an ergonomic Louis Vuitton backpack. The drive has a 500 gigabyte capacity (yes, more than you'll ever need!) and is available for pre-order at $189, which is actually a decent price for what you're getting.

What's cooler than taking a nap on the job?

Filed under: Haute Home, Stores We Love, Style in the News

Now you can take a nap anywhere -- in your home, at the mall, in the airport, or even in a store -- thanks to MetroNaps and their pod systems. And as their Website says, a mid-day nap boosts alertness, learning, memory and mood.

These pods are sphere-shaped, and surround your upper body in order to block out sound as you recline on the "ergonomic" leg rests. It even has a built-in alarm clock; no annoying noises, just a gentle vibration to wake you from your slumber. What's interesting about MetroNaps is the focus on the supposed "science" of naps, and they even say that naps can make you look younger. They suggest employers order a few pods for the office in order for workers to stay productive. I can foresee many people abusing the napping privilege by extending the recommended 20 minute power nap.

It's kind of a frightening contraption at first glance, looking much like a giant football helmet, but I think I might be able to fall asleep in one if it came down to it. And I certainly wouldn't mind being able to take naps during the workday; if you're in New York, there are two MetroNaps locations where you can give the pods a try.

Tired of soda machines? Try the wine machine.

Filed under: Haute Home, Fashionable Food

It seems like inventors are trying to advance the way we drink wine -- first with the wine-to-go bottles, and now with a wine serving system by Enomatic. It's sort of like the typical drink machines in fast food restaurants -- place a cup under the spout, press the lever, and out comes your drink of choice. But in this case, it's with wine.

Enomatic's system offers quite a few benefits. It provides a way for customers to serve themselves, it preserves the wine for up to 3 weeks, and because it's computerized, it's a way to prevent over-pouring by the wait-staff. And they even offer a "wine card," where patrons can put money on the card to spend in the machine. They offer machines to hold up to 16 wine bottles, which beats the biggest soda machines I've ever seen.

So, imagine this: sitting in a nice restaurant and asking for a refill of your chardonnay, only to hear -- "Oh, you do it yourself. The wine machine's right over there." What do you think? Or even better, having a small version in your house to keep your wine fresh?

Color-coordinate with personalized Nike shoes

Nike has introduced a way to have seriously unique shoes. With their Nike iD Website, you can pick a shoe design, pick the colors for almost every aspect of it, have a short message embroidered on the heel, and then have them shipped to your doorstep. They certainly aren't cheap though -- for many of the shoes, the customized editions will run you $150; however, some are in the low $100 range. There's a big selection of men's and women's shoes on the site, so everyone can match their shoes to their outfits or their iPod (as Nike's site suggests).

I think it's a cool idea, as it provides a way to spruce up the common tennis/running/soccer/football shoe by picking your own color combinations. But, as I came to find out, it can be very easy to design a very, very ugly pair of shoes. And I'm not sure I would rely on an online image for ordering an expensive pair of tennis shoes!

What first interested me about the custom Nike shoes was the option to customize Air Max shoe designs from past generations. You can choose shoe models from '90, '91, '93, '95, and '97. So, if you missed out on a certain pair of shoes from the 90's, here's your chance to redeem yourself.

Five items every guy needs

Like Anne Metz's tips for women, I believe simplicity is the key to success for a guy's wardrobe. It's best to nail these outfits, and then move on to more trendy things. Now, there are definitely more than five things we guys need to have in our closets. I took a look in my closet and tried to determine what I really needed. This list is assuming that you have some of the basics to begin with.

1. A nice pair of khaki pants. Sure -- they're nothing fancy, but that's just it. With a nice pair of khaki pants, you have a ton of options; throw on a decent t-shirt, and you've got a simple, casual outfit; don a dress shirt and tie, and you're looking spiffy enough to show up to the office. And I'll let you in on a secret -- my favorite pair is from Old Navy. I'm not usually a fan of Old Navy clothing, but I've gotten a ton of compliments of "oh, what nice pants" I'm wearing.

2. A variety of solid-colored t-shirts. Whether it's using it as an undershirt, or wearing it on its own, it's a key element to a casual, simple wardrobe. Color-coordinate your t-shirt with a sweater (And throw out those old white v-necks!), or wear one solo every day of the week.

3. A quality black suit. It's absolutely essential to have a suit on hand. It's going to come in handy for any number of things -- job interviews, formal dinners, weddings. And when the occasion doesn't call for a jacket, you've got a nice pair of black dress pants on their own. Oh, and by the way, it doesn't have to be expensive! (Dress-shirt and black shoes required).

4. A pair of brown shoes. This goes along the same lines as the khaki pants -- they're perfect for keeping it casual, or stepping it up a little bit. And please, no penny-loafers or wingtips -- they can't ever be casual.

5. Boxer-briefs. That's right guys, time to grow up. No more briefs or cartoon-patterned boxers, these are much more comfortable and respectable. Certainly, the underwear category isn't all that important to us like it is to women, but it's something you wear every day. And yes, I realize when buying CK or Tommy Hilfiger brand underwear, the revealing picture of the male model just isn't necessary -- just close your eyes.

Vogue's editor-in-chief to hit the big screen

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Soon, you'll get to see what Anna Wintour, the icy editor-in-chief at Vogue magazine, is really like. As reported by Variety.com, A&E IndieFilms is putting together a documentary of Wintour at work, more specifically the work she did to create the September issue of Vogue, which is the so-called annual "fashion bible."

With the success of the recent film "The Devil Wears Prada," -- which was reportedly based on Wintour -- the company thinks this documentary will be well-received. A&E IndieFilms says the documentary will be "a very candid and very exclusive window into this iconoclast, her fame and her notoriety."

If Wintour is as cold and insincere as Anne says, then I think this documentary won't try to hide it. And she may not be the friendliest person on earth, but she's proven that she can run a successful magazine. I'm also interested to see how a huge magazine like Vogue comes together from start to finish.

The one catch? The film isn't set to debut until 2008.

Trump lets Miss USA keep her title

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Miss USA -- a title that is supposed to represent someone who is beautiful inside and out, caring and well-rounded. According to the Associated Press, however, the latest Miss USA, Tara Conner, hasn't exactly been the quintessential queen. She has suffered some criticism for rumors about her drinking habits since she won the the title (while she was only 20).

But more importantly, Mr. Donald Trump owns the Miss Universe Organization, and he had considered stripping Miss USA of her title because of the drinking. But since Trump is such a nice guy, he's going to let her keep her title, with hopes that she'll be the "comeback kid."

I find it a little disconcerting that Trump has the power the make this decision. The real estate mogul really has a piece of so many companies and organizations. What's next? Will he be the one to decide whether or not the president should be impeached? Or will he even be the one giving presidential pardons?

Get your wine to go!

Filed under: Haute Home, Celebrities with Style

A few months ago, I went to an outdoor concert where patrons are welcome to bring their own food and drinks. Like almost everyone there, I took a bottle of wine and a couple glasses. But with the combination of concrete on the ground, darkness, and people continuously bumping into me, it just wasn't the best idea to bring this stuff. Needless to say, I came home with a broken wine glass.

But there's good news -- Hardy Wine Company has launched the "Shuttle." It's an all-in-one, single-serving (187ml), bottle-glass combination that is sure to come in handy for many occasions. The glass actually seals the bottle, and when you're ready to drink, just twist it off. Both the glass and the bottle are made of acrylic, which is perfect for events where glass isn't permitted. For now, it comes only in either Shiraz or chardonnay.

The "Shuttle" seems like a great idea to me. It's better than risking your stem-ware or venturing into boxed wine!

Bling for your Crocs

By now I think we're all familiar with Crocs, the lightweight rubber half-shoe, half-clog that come in a variety of some pretty bright (and pretty darn tacky) colors. I guess the vast array of colors wasn't enough for Crocs connoisseurs, however, because you can now personalize your Crocs with footballs, flowers, flags, and peace signs.

Jibbitz makes these little rubber inserts that go in the holes found on the standard Crocs. They remind me of the once popular BeDazzler -- except it's for a pair of clogs. With Jibbitz, it's possible to make Crocs even more tacky! Pick out a few letter inserts and spell your name on your Crocs, or even show how much you love your dog with a rubber poodle insert.

I can't say that I agree with doing this, as I'm not a big fan of the normal Crocs in the first place. So, unless you're less than 10 or older than 60 -- yes, I think a grandma could pull it off! -- then stay away!

A set of 7 Jibbitz will run you $17.43, or about $2.50 for individual pieces.
