Scary Pedicures! Avoid Sketchy Salons and Keep All Your Toes

Is a pretty pedi worth losing a pinky toe? We think not! Photo: Heide Benser, Corbis

I recently walked out on a pedicure because I could clearly see that the technician was not cleaning her tools before she used them on the girl next to me (who had open blisters on her feet, by the way).

I also have two friends who got infections from pedicures -- one of them had to have a toenail surgically removed and the other had her pinky toe amputated.

Since then, I have decided to do my own at-home pedis because I don't want to lose a digit. The Barielle 60 Second Mani-Pedi is a dream come true for DIY-ers -- it's a scrub that whisks away scraggly cuticles and dry patches, and it moisturizes so you don't even need lotion afterward.

Barielle's celebrity nail technician, Elle, is also skeeved out by public pedis and gives this advice for saving your feet from nastiness.

Avon Sued Over Injuries from Stretch Mark Cream

Only purchase products from company-verified distributors. Photo: Getty Images

As reported by the Daily News, Avon is being sued by Milka Betances, a 30-year-old Bronx resident who claims she was burned and scarred by Avon's Anew Clinical Professional Stretch Mark Smoother.

The product, which contains Butea, a plant extract to lighten stretch marks, as well as ingredients to boost elastin and collagen, won the prestigious Cosmetic Executive Women's Insider Choice Award and has numerous positive reviews on various websites.

However, Betances claimed she was burned by the cream, which she purchased from an Avon dealer on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx.

Could this have been a case of diversion?

Companies like L'Oreal have recently spoken out against products being distributed by unlicensed people or companies. Buying products from anywhere other than company-authorized retailers puts the consumer at risk of buying an outdated, unauthentic, or tainted product.

No word yet as to whether the seller was identified and whether or not she was in fact a verified Avon rep. To avoid any risk, anyone purchasing Avon products should only do so through the representatives listed on Avon.com.

The Secret to "Perfect" Skin: Foundation 101

Our makeup artist, Carmindy, breaks down the simple steps to applying foundation flawlessly. Cover up dark circles and blemishes with ease and fake a truly flawless face (don't you love it?!). See her tips:

Foundation 101 Steps

Nothing gives the illusion of flawless, even skin like a coat of foundation. The trick is knowing how to properly apply it. Makeup expert Carmindy, star of TLC's What Not To Wear, takes us through the simple steps for flawless foundation for light, medium, and dark skin.

    Light Skin Undertones
Light skin has either pink or yellow undertones. To determine yours, follow this guide: If you have a lot of redness or an allover pink tint to your skin, you have pink undertones. If your skin is fairly even and you tan easily, you have yellow undertones.

    Medium Skin Undertones
According to Carmindy, woman with medium skin usually have olive undertones.

    Dark Skin Undertones
Women with darker skin tones tend to either be a little golden in undertone or more reddish, so keep that in mind when selecting foundation shades.

    Find Your Match
At the cosmetics counter, choose three shades of foundation that are as close to your natural skin tone as possible. Apply a stripe of each shade near your jaw line, and whichever blends the easiest into your skin is the best match.

    Prime Your Canvas
Once you find the perfect shade of foundation, prep skin with a luminizing face primer. "It just makes the skin nice and smooth so when you apply the foundation, it'll just glide right on," explains Carmindy.

    Application
For the most even application, use a foundation sponge to lightly feather foundation across your skin. This will ensure you get even coverage.

    Tip:
If you don't like an allover application, you can always spot-apply foundation only where you need it most. "I like to apply foundation only in areas that really need it. That usually tends to be around the nose, around the eyes and the chin," says Carmindy.

    Tip:
According to Carmindy, many women with darker skin tones tend to have areas of their faces that are a little darker than the rest. If you still have any dark areas after you apply foundation, just even them out by pushing the foundation sponge into the skin. This just adds a slightly heavier layer of foundation on the darker areas so your whole face looks even.

    Conceal Flaws
Apply concealer after your foundation. If you put it on before, your foundation will just wipe it off. "Pick up the concealer with a fine-tipped concealer brush -- remember to use the smallest amount possible," suggests Carmindy. Gently dab onto any flaws.

'Army Wives' Star Kim Delaney's Trout Pout - Lip Injections, Much?

Putting your money where your mouth is. Literally! Photo: AP

We received a tip from a StyleList staffer that Kim Delaney's lips have taken on a life of their own. It's a little condition we like to call "Trout Pout" (when lips are artificially enhanced to the point that they curl back unnaturally, resembling those of a fish).

On her show, "Army Wives," Kim's character sometimes speaks without her mouth even moving.

Granted, there's plenty of pressure on actresses to nip, tuck and stay forever young, but when your lips outshine your acting, maybe you've gone too far.

According to the Aesthetic Surgery Education & Research Foundation, 9 out of 10 injection patients tell their friends about their plumping, so hopefully Kim's friends aren't afraid to give honest feedback. The most likely candidate for injections also happens to be working, married females with one to three kids. So at least Kim's keeping it in character.

Are Kim's lips sexy or silly? Leave a comment and let us know.

DIY Threading! Yes, We're Serious

The Sun Maita Threader Kit includes everything you need to make "peach fuzz" a thing of the past. Photo courtesy of Sun Maita

I've never tried threading for hair removal before, but I was beyond intrigued when I met with Anita Sun, co-creator of the Sun Maita Threader Kit.

She showed off her baby-smooth face and attributed it to threading since she was 12 (a Chinese right of passage, as she described it).

Women who have noticeable facial hair spend a ton of money on in-salon threading treatments, that's why Anita Sun and co-creator Sara Maita invented the Threader so women could do it cost-effectively at home.

I've never been bothered by facial hair, per se, but Sun said that simply taking off my "peach fuzz" would allow my makeup to go on more smoothly and give my skin a radiant appearance. Who could turn that down?

Cameron Diaz - The Star's Best and Worst Beauty Looks

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Beauty Tips

We thought it was about time to celebrate the many faces of Cameron Diaz. Take a look back at the star's early years (we caught her with roots...and a hair piece!) and re-live the blonde-to-brunette-to-blonde transformation that shocked us all.

It's all here in the gallery below...enjoy!

Cameron Diaz Beauty Evolution

Hollywood's golden girl is known for her box office hits and megastar boyfriends, but can we talk about her ever-changing hair and makeup? Take a look at the many faces of Cameron Diaz, then and now!

We first met the star in 1994 when she starred alongside Jim Carrey in The Mask. She was young, fresh-faced, and absolutely stunning. And her lilac eyeshadow looks so gorgeous on her blue eyes, we'll forgive her for the too-light foundation.

    Jim Smeal, WireImage

Hey, isn't that Shanna Moakler? No, it's Cameron at the 1st Annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards in 1995. We're so glad she gave up the roots and fake hair (but kind of intrigued by this rare view of her natural color!).

    Jim Smeal, WireImage

Cameron sported a layered cut and brick-red lips to a convention in 1996, the year she starred with Keanu Reaves in Feeling Minnesota.

    Ron Galella, WireImage

We love the "no makeup" look and super-cute haircut Cameron had at the In & Out premiere in 1997.

    Barry King, WireImage

Witness the Something About Mary cut in its full glory, at a press event in 1998.

    Jim Smeal, WireImage

By the time There's Something About Mary premiered in July, Cameron had finally broken up her too-blunt cut into layers. Again, we love the lilac eyeshadow on those baby blues!

    Jim Smeal, WireImage

Cameron looked ethereal at the Shrine Auditorium in 2000, the year the first Charlie's Angels movie came out. Her barely-there brows, black dress, and pale skin made her look too washed out. But still stunning!

    Jeffrey Mayer, WireImage

We love Cameron's funky waves at the MTV Movie Awards in 2000. However, the cool platinum hue is a bit extreme, so we're glad to know that Cam goes more golden in the future.

    Jim Smeal, WireImage

At the 2001 MTV Movie Awards, Cameron looked disheveled. The berry lips lacked definition (lip liner...stat!), the brown shadow was dull, and the hair didn't help, either.

Nipple Cream as Lip Balm? You Betcha!

Balms away! Image courtesy of Lansinoh.

When I read that Angie Harmon swears by Lansinoh nipple cream as lip balm, my first thought was, Say what?

My second thought was to immediately log onto drugstore.com and order a tube for myself. And guess what? It's awesome. It's a thick, moisturizing cream with no smell or taste, and it really works!

Intrigued? Read more about Lansinoh and the other cool products we found with "secret" beauty uses:

Ah-ha Uses for Beauty Products

Your MacGyver guide to beauty! These clever "off-label" tricks for popular products will solve last-minute emergencies. These tips, culled from blog confessions, expert advice and our own experiments, will have you reusing your makeup in no time, not to mention save you money and get you out of emergencies.

    TotalBeauty.com

    Nipple Cream
    Great as: Lip balm
Lansinoh nipple cream was intended for use by breastfeeding mothers, but the thick, moisturizing formula has gained underground popularity as a lip balm, too! Actress Angie Harmon is said to be a fan.

    Lansinoh.com

    Petroleum Jelly
    Great as: Furniture fixer
You may have used your trusty Vaseline Pure Petroleum Jelly, $4.49 as lip balm, moisturizer, lash definer or makeup remover, but did you know it also camouflages light scratches in wood furniture? The Beauty Brains bloggers love this tip: Just dab it on and buff. You can also make light bulbs easier to unscrew by spreading a little around the thread of a new bulb before screwing it in.

    TotalBeauty.com

    Conditioner
    Great as: Shaving cream
When traveling or just in a pinch, use the same trick employed by stars like Natalie Portman: Shave your legs with hair conditioner. It provides the same slickness as your shaving cream does, allowing your razor to slide over your legs and condition your skin without nicks and razor burn. (We like Paul Mitchell The Conditioner, $15.99.)

    TotalBeauty.com

    Oil-Free Moisturizer
    Great as: Frizz tamer
Skin Rhythm blogger Jen confesses using a less-than-pea-sized amount of Juice Beauty Oil-Free Moisturizer as a smoothing cream for her very fine hair: "It smoothed and sealed my dry ends and added a bit of shine. It even added a bit of definition to my layers without weighing down my hair or causing it to look [flat and] oily, even hours later." You can use most any face moisturizer, lip balm or body lotion to smooth frizzy flyaways. Start by rubbing just a drop of the product together between hands, then smoothing over hair or along hair ends to tame frizz. (Curly hair tip: To help define curls, wrap one-inch pieces of hair around your finger.) Add more product if necessary, but use sparingly to avoid a greasy look.

    TotalBeauty.com

    Lip Balm
Great as: Cuticle conditioner, makeup remover
When you're done applying your lip balm (or virtually colorless gloss), don't just wipe off that leftover product on your finger. Rub it into your cuticles for a nice conditioning treatment. (Note: You can also do this with any room-temperature oil or butter you get on your hands while cooking.) Another tip for lip balm: Like petroleum jelly, it makes a great on-the-go makeup remover for that little eye makeup stain you get after washing your face. Just make sure you're not using peppermint or menthol lip balm as it could sting your eyes.)

    TotalBeauty.com

    Rubbing Alcohol and Hairspray
    Great as: Stain remover
To remove home hair color stains on your skin, sink or even carpet, sponge it with an alcohol-soaked cotton ball or rag. Just be sure to apply with a cotton ball soon after you see the stain. If you wait too long, the stain gets harder to remove. If you don't have alcohol handy and the stain is on fabric, try this tip backed by Good Housekeeping: Saturate it with hairspray, which contains alcohol and can help loosen the stain. Then soak and launder as soon as possible.

    TotalBeauty.com

    Eye Shadow
Great as: Highlighter, contour creator, eyeliner and brow filler
Neutral metallic or white eye shadow (like Sonia Kashuk Powder Partners Eye Shadow Duo in Cocktail Hour, $7.99) can easily double as a highlighter, while matte eye shadow that's a few shades darker than your skin tone can be used to contour features. (Read TotalBeauty.com's highlighting and contouring how-to article for tips and tricks.) You can also use eye shadow as eyeliner by wetting an eyeliner brush, dipping it into the shadow and dragging it along your lash line. For brow filler, dab dry shadow on an angled dry eyeliner or brow brush and use a very light hand to fill in your brows.

    TotalBeauty.com

    Cleanser or moisturizer
    Great as: Skin soothing treatment
Refrigerate cleansers or moisturizers in lotion or gel form and use them as a post-extraction soothing treatment or refreshing makeup remover for dry skin types. (Try Alba Sea Lettuce Cleansing Milk, $9.95). You can also do this with eye cream to give tired eyes a cooling, soothing effect.

    TotalBeauty.com

    Foundation
    Great as: tinted moisturizer/concealer
Want lighter coverage than say, Nars Balanced Foundation, $40, without getting a new foundation? Create tinted moisturizer by mixing your current foundation (you can even do this with stick foundation) with a little moisturizer (we like Olay Complete Defense Daily UV Moisturizer, $13.99). Do this on the back of your hand -- not in the bottles -- and experiment with the consistency and coverage until you get what you want. Apply with a fingers or a brush (a sponge may soak up too much product) and blend well. Don't forget to set with powder to make the coverage last longer.

Bonus tip: If you need a concealer when you've run out, dab on a bit of the foundation that has caked into its cap. The moisture there has evaporated a bit more, leaving your foundation with a thicker consistency. Blend outward with fingers or a concealer brush. (Watch this video for more tips on how to apply concealer.)

Brow wow wow! From left to right, Brooke Shields in 1981, Madonna in 1985, and model Hilary Rhoda in 2009. Photos: Ron Galella, WireImage | Ron Galella, WireImage | Stephen Lovekin, Getty Images

What comes around goes around: Bushy, natural-looking brows are making a statement -- again -- this summer. It all started with a young Brooke Shields (above left) in 1980's "The Blue Lagoon"... the media was insistent that she should pluck away, but she refused, and bushy brows became her signature.

Next, Madonna (above middle) rocked some serious arches all through her "Like a (tweezer) Virgin" period and has apparently not allowed 12-year-old budding fashionista daughter, Lourdes, to touch hers. And bravo! How many women wish they could start from scratch and have the full, lush brows they had in their youth?

Speaking of lush brows, there's Estée Lauder model Hilary Rhoda (above right) at the FiFi Fragrance Foundation Awards on May 27. She's young, stunning and smart. How do I know she's smart? Because she has left those full eyebrows alone a la Brooke (check out the unnerving resemblance to Shields). And now the model-of-the-moment is making the big bucks strutting runways across the globe.

Eye Brows 101

The right brow shape can lift your eyes, slim your face, and take ten years off your look...instantly! Makeup expert Carmindy, star of TLC's What Not To Wear, shares her best secrets for youthful, natural, and perfectly-groomed brows.

    Trim and Shape
Before plucking, your brows may need a trim. Grab a spooley brush and a pair of small scissors. Brush your brow hairs straight up, and if there are hairs that go beyond your natural brow line, carefully snip them away.

    Easy Tweezing
Carmindy suggests having two types of tweezers: one with a very fine tip and one with a slanted tip. You can use the slanted ones to grab a few hairs at once. The needle-nosed, fine-tipped tweezers are good for precision plucking and getting those tiny, hard-to-reach hairs.

    Where to Start
"Everybody's brows are different, so if you're not sure where to start plucking, try this: Hold a makeup brush vertically along the side of your nose. Then use the side of the brush as the marker of where the brow should begin," explains Carmindy.

    Finding the Arch
Angle the same makeup brush outward so that the bottom end is against your nose, and the top and is even with the iris of your eye--the brush now marks the point where the brow should arch.

    Where to End
Angle the brush out even more toward the outermost corner of your eye--that's where the brow should end.

    Mind the Gaps
"Not everybody's brows are totally perfect, so you may need a little brow corrector to fill in any gaps. A waterproof liquid brow corrector can last the longest," says Carmindy. Starting at the inside edge and working your way out, feather on a light brow color to fill in any sparse areas.

    Voila!
Now your brows are groomed to perfection! Having well-defined, well-groomed brows really makes your face look finished. All you need to do is trim, pluck, and correct, and you'll have perfect, face-framing brows.

Creator of Huge Lips, Skinny Hips Lip Gloss (at Space NK, Scoop and b-glowing.com), Karen Robinovitz takes us through the trials and tribulations of creating a beauty brand from scratch.

Life was stressful. To say the least.

I was a one-woman company, figuring out how to manufacture, manage the finances of it all, deal with the legal aspects and now I was beginning to think about sales and PR.

On the component front, I placed an order for 30,000 (5,000 of each color). I knew I would have to cut a big check, but there is major difference between knowing you have to write a check and actually writing one! And it was -- cha-ching -- time to pay the fiddler. I owed at least half -- 12 k! -- when you're a new client with no credit, you pay half up front and half upon delivery.

Now I had to wait about 12 weeks for the components to come.

This was fall of last year and the launch was slated for spring. Patience... not my strong suit. But for some instant gratification (and to jump ahead for a sec), you can find my products here now!

In the meantime, I worked on the press kit, which is what is sent out to all editors, writers and media in order to introduce them to the product. To get into "long leads" (PR lingo meaning the monthly magazines who work three, four, sometimes even more in advance of the publishing date), I had to start seeding the beauty editors by February. And before I could write a press kit, I had to hire a PR firm. (By the way, did I mention that during all of this, I had a full-time job? Mama needed a salary!)

Remember, I am not a trusfundafarian!

The Axe experience didn't end with learning how their leather-inspired fragrance, Instinct, is made. We got to talk leather with the premier stretch leather couturier of France, Jean-Claude Jitrois at the Cafe de la Paix. He arrived in a black blazer of his own design with a matching razor tie and -- vis-à-vis his translator -- explained the following:

1) He enjoys the psychology of dressing and what it says about a person. As he said this, he looked around the room and we all attempted to suck in our stomachs and avert his fixed glare.

I scrub in circular motions, exfoliating all of the dead skin. This is the best facial you can give yourself and it leaves your skin so smooth!

I spent my long weekend mastering (through trial and error) the nail trend of the moment, a half-moon mani, so you don't have to. Here, time-saving tips and tricks.

It gets its name because the nails are completely polished, except for the lighter, half-moon shape at the base of your fingernails. Those areas are left bare, creating a clean, cool silhouette that is so 1940s. (No surprise, Dita Von Teese is rarely spotted without the look.)

"It's a classically glamorous look," says Amanda Fontanarrosa, a CND nail artist who created variations of the style for the Fall 2009 runway shows of designers Ruffian and Thakoon.

Beauty BLAB - Color Me Happy

Creator of Huge Lips, Skinny Hips Lip Gloss (at Space NK!), Karen Robinovitz takes us through the trials and tribulations of creating a beauty brand from scratch.

We had the packaging look and feel down. I was happy as can be. I now needed to figure out the colors of the six-shade gloss line -- fun, right?

I polled my makeup artist friends – I am blessed with having a few fabulous ones! I asked them what colors they would bring to someone's house if they had no idea what that person looked like or what color their skin tone was. They unanimously came up with the same replies: a light pink or nude, a rich pink, a red, a peach, a color, and clear. Now, some labs have specific color departments where their sole mission is to create a variety of hues. Mine didn't.
