Fourth of July Fragrance - A French Tribute to America

The sweet smell of liberty. Photo courtesy of Caron.

As we celebrate July 4th, the famous French fragrance and beauty empire House of Caron has an interesting tale that's very timely. It's the story behind their Lady Caron fragrance, inspired by the Statue of Liberty.

Ernest Daltroff, founder of the House of Caron, fled Europe in 1939 and landed (where else?) in America. He was, like so many others, excited and touched by the sight of the Statue of Liberty, and the future it represented. He decided to create a perfume to commemorate that moment, and (60 years later) it finally materialized.

Cartier, Bulgari, Chopard and Van Cleef & Arpels Fragrances - What Jewelry Smells Like

So few of us can actually afford to drop thousands upon thousands of dollars on an expensive piece of jewelry right now (or, quite frankly, ever).

The idea of just dabbing on (and not dripping in) a high-end jewelers' creation is luxury enough these days.

And since so much of it is about owning something from one of the prestigious houses, I suggest treating yourself to one of their much more affordable, yet no less breathtaking, pieces -- a fine fragrance.

Here is a selection of the most brilliant.

Delices de Cartier With big, juicy, ripe notes of iced cherry, this yummy Oriental is spot-on for summer; $60.

Bulgari Omnia Green Jade The Italian jeweler's crisp green and soft jasmine scent is clouded in musk and – get this – pistachio. How very gelato of them; $60.

Chopard Cascade They celebrated the launch of this new Oriental fragrance, which was inspired by red carpet glamour, with a big fête at Cannes. (We can't think of a more appropriate place to debut.)

What's does that smell like? Belle de Nuit, a flower that blooms at night, throws its scent, and closes up in the morning. Leave them wanting more, I guess. Launching later this summer; $79.

Van Cleef & Arpels Féerie I love fantasizing about the jeweler's whimsical Midsummer Night's Dream Collection, but it's this delicate, sparkling floral scent – which has the same lighthearted spirit – which makes the dream a reality; $110.

Heidi Klum Isn't Cheap, and Neither Is Her Perfume

Heidi Klum put a lot into her fragrances -- she told the Daily Star, "My perfumes carry my name to show I am fully behind them. I created them from A to Z. The scents carry my handwriting."

So, it's no wonder she didn't take kindly to a German-based internet vendor selling those scents at a serious discount on eBay.

AHN reports that she's suing the vendor for £100,000 in compensation, claiming the it is cheapening her brand. The vendor, predictably, is fighting the allegations and is expected to appear in court on July 14.

"Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey (aka "McDreamy") is launching a new scent with Avon for Fall.

A follow-up to his first fragrance, Unscripted, Patrick Dempsey 2 is being touted as a bolder, more intense fragrance.

The sweet part? It's inspired by his wife, and conveniently Avon's Global Creative Color Director, Jillian Dempsey (makeup artist to the stars).

The fragrance is "designed to embrace strength, commitment and intimacy between two people," Avon says.

Queen Latifah to Launch Fragrance

When Queen Latifah told us at the FiFi Fragrance Awards that she was launching a new perfume (and that it made her "edible"), we were intrigued. Now that we've got more information, we're positively abuzz with excitement!

Queen Latifah doesn't consider fragrance an easy choice, saying in the press release, "Beauty really does start on the inside. It's like a state of mind, a state of love if you will. So I see fragrance as just a natural expression of this state of love: scent expresses a woman's confidence and sensuality, it's how she embraces her body, her mind and her strength."

L'Oreal Beats Knockoff Scents in Court

L'Oreal fought back against the knockoffs and won! Photo: Nordstrom.com

We've all had a run-in with a "designer imposter" fragrance or two -- occasionally it's in the bathroom of a club, and sometimes it's when we're trapped in an elevator with the woman who wore too much. It's never good, so we're thrilled to hear that L'Oréal has won their case against three firms that copied some of L'Oréal's top perfumes!

WWD reports that the three firms -- Bellure, Malaika and Starion -- manufactured, imported and distributed knockoffs of popular L'Oréal fragrances like Trésor, Anaïs-Anaïs and Noa in the U.K. Yesterday, the European Court of Justice ruled in L'Oréal's favor.

Faith Hill is the newest perfumer on the block! Hoping to follow the success of her husband Tim McGraw's fragrance, Hill and Coty, Inc. announced the debut of Faith Hill Parfums at an intimate event in a chic NYC townhouse.

Hill -- looking fresh as a flower in head-to-toe pink and rosy lipstick -- excitedly explained how she was involved in the creation of the fragrance from start to finish, adding that she hopes women will feel beautiful when they wear it.

"To me a beautiful woman is confident, smart, and has a sense of humor. Beauty comes from the inside but what you wear on the outside can help you feel more confident and sexy."

Reese Witherspoon's partnership with Avon just became a little more fragrant.

The A-lister is launching a perfume collection, In Bloom by Reese Witherspoon, with the cosmetics giant. The "floral oriental woody" fragrance will be available in November.

What exactly does In Bloom smell like? Jasmin, gardenia and magnolia; a touch of Georgia peach tea leaves; and a hint of amber and wood.

The actress says in developing the scent, she looked to her childhood in Tennessee -- where a Magnolia tree blossomed in her back yard.

The Scented Opera Smells Out

A smell of a show! Photo courtesy of the Guggenheim

A high-falutin' opera from the man who brought us Ralph Lauren Polo Blue and Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce? That's right!

Earlier this week, Christophe Laudamiel, one of the industry's top perfumers (or "noses," as us perfumistas call them), completed the final sold out performance of his "Green Aria: A ScentOpera," a 30-minute opera accompanied by 30-plus scents, or as Laudamiel lovingly calls them, "characters."

In a darkened theater at the Guggenheim in NYC, the audience was treated to six-second blasts of a fragrance via a personal "scent microphone" affixed to the seats. Each smell helped tell the story about the tension between nature and technology.

Kate Moss to Launch Vintage Fragrance

Kate Moss has made a fortune re-imagining her own vintage-chic style for the Kate Moss Topshop collection, so it's no surprise that she'd take the same no-fail approach for her line of fragrances for Coty. The name of her latest, and third scent, says it all: "Vintage."

"I am fascinated by vintage pieces because they not only have a remarkable beauty but also an innate sense of history," says Moss. "I love the fact that each object has its own story to tell. And yet vintage items can be reinvented with a modern twist to make them very fresh and relevant today. That's why vintage looks have inspired my personal style, my work as a fashion designer and, now, my fragrance."

Michelle Obama's Date Night Scent

By now, we've all heard about the First Lady's rendezvous over the weekend -- President Obama took his lovely wife on a date in New York City, with dinner at Blue Hill restaurant followed by a Broadway play: Joe Turner's "Come and Gone."

It's been well chronicled that Michelle Obama looked fantastic (her black ruffled dress appears to be an Azzedine Alaïa, and the shoes, Jimmy Choo's "Lantern" heel). But did you know that she likely smelled just as beautiful as she looked?

During the couple's trip to London for the G20 Summit, Michelle charmed English schoolgirls and Queens alike, all while attending dozens of events under the watchful eye of, well, the world. Her meeting with Carla Bruni-Sarkozi alone had fashion tongues wagging for days.

The Axe experience didn't end with learning how their leather-inspired fragrance, Instinct, is made. We got to talk leather with the premier stretch leather couturier of France, Jean-Claude Jitrois at the Cafe de la Paix. He arrived in a black blazer of his own design with a matching razor tie and -- vis-à-vis his translator -- explained the following:

1) He enjoys the psychology of dressing and what it says about a person. As he said this, he looked around the room and we all attempted to suck in our stomachs and avert his fixed glare.
