The Uniform Project - One Girl, One Dress, One Year

Could you wear one dress for an entire year? Day 48 of The Uniform Project. Photo courtesy of theuniformproject.com

For us fashion types, the idea of wearing one dress even twice in one week can be daunting. Yet, Sheena Matheiken has vowed to wear one dress for an entire year.

As the founder of The Uniform Project, Matheiken will wear one dress for one year all in the name of charity and sustainable fashion.

For the "uniform" part of the project, Matheiken drew inspiration from the school uniforms of her childhood in India -- they served as a blank slate for creativity.

Donations raised by this year-long project will benefit the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots charity based in Mumbai, whose contributions go to fund uniforms and other school expenses for children in the slums of India.

Amy Smart - The Environmentally Aware Actress Confesses Her Eco-Sin

First, she went one-on-one with Dita Von Teese, delving into the queen of burlesque's accidentally eco love of vintage. Now, Hollywood's green girl, Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff of ecostiletto.com, strikes again. This time, she lands an exclusive interview with "It" actress Amy Smart, who dishes on her favorite sustainable fashion designers and the eco-unfriendly habit she just can't kick. So, without further ado, meet Rachel.

Reminding Dita Von Teese that she's an eco-icon and interviewing Rachelle Carson Begley about what it's really like to live with Ed are some of the perks of editing an eco-fashion online magazine. But Amy Smart really made me work to get this piece.

I get it: The girl's got two movies out this summer, including the blockbuster "Crank: High Voltage," and my interest in her eco-friendliness was probably not at the top of her publicist's priority list. But by being a bit of a stalker (in a nice way), I finally got a chance to talk with Amy last week and was surprised at what I found out.

Dita Von Teese - Vintage Style Icon and "Accidental Ecoista"

Vintage -- and green -- beauty, Dita Von Teese

We are so jealous of Rachel Sarnoff from EcoStiletto, the super-fun and stylish site all about easy ways to be fabulous and eco-friendly. The site has Rachel's new interview with one of our style heroines, the divine Dita Von Teese. They chatted about Dita's attention-getting vintage wardrobe, fashion icons, young Hollywood style, and her thoughts on being an "accidental ecoista."

Despite Dita's frenetic pace – she just got back from a star turn in Paris at renowned Crazy Horse theater, has two new burlesque shows in the works and a book coming out with famed photographer Sheryl Nields -- she is always turned out in impeccable vintage style, including her signature cinched-waist designer frocks.

It's the glamour – plus the frequently friendlier price tags – of vintage that have always appealed to Dita. One thing she hadn't considered? The green angle of vintage.

Earth from the apollo space craftThe fashion industry is promoting guilt-free shopping today in honor of Earth Day. Designers really want you to reduce your eco-footprint by purchasing their various wares. (Aww, isn't that sweet?) Here's how:

  • Target's first eco-friendly designer collaboration, Loomstate for Target, has hit stores just in time for you to pull together your edgy, organic-cotton look for Earth Day fetes.

  • Looking to add to your monogrammed luggage set? If you shop online at Louis Vuitton today, the luxury retailer will donate 15% of all purchases on their US website to The Climate Project. FYI, The Climate Project is an organization founded by Al Gore, who also helped invent the internet. (How's that for synergy?)

  • Pretty Little Thing NYC is selling a globe necklace to commemorate the planet's special day. The rest of the year, the globe revolves around you ... er, your neck. A portion of the proceeds from these babies are going to The Wilderness Society.

  • Did you know Donna Karan is a total natural wellness hippie? Check out this video of Donna explaining some of the techniques and benefits of holistic medicine and her new project Urban Zen. BTW, she's designed a bunch of awesome tees that benefit charity, available exclusively at Tonic.

  • Keds has revamped their classic kicks for Earth Day. Not only are their Green Label shoes made of organic cotton and recycled rubber, but for each pair sold, Keds plants a tree. Friday is Arbor Day people!

  • Anthopologie hooked up with Edun (the brainchild of Bono's wife Ali Hewson) for a line of Bee Tees. These 100% organic tees will bring awareness to the alarming disappearance of honeybees. All while making you look fashionable and socially-conscious, of course.

  • Don't throw out your old cosmetic containers. Origins has teamed up with Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford to launch a cosmetics recycling program. All Origins counters (even the ones inside department stores) will accept empty cosmetic containers from any brand.

Stella McCartney - "Being Called Sustainable is Not Sexy"

Stella McCartney has made headway as crusader against animal cruelty and maintains a vegan fashion line and lifestyle, but despite her penchant for organic fabrics, don't feel compelled to call her a sustainable designer. "It's not very sexy sounding, is it," she retorted recently at a Neiman Marcus shopping event in San Francisco when it was suggested that she is the face of sustainable luxury. "We've never shouted about it, and until recently no one has really mentioned it except for journalists. If anything, people would ridicule us when it came up!"

"That said, naturally I'm proud of it, because that's where fashion is going," she continued. "It's the most modern thing you can do. It's just the way I work – fashion isn't separate from the rest of your life. When we can do something that is environmentally conscious in the collection, then we do. If it looks like crap, then we don't do it."

Loomstate for Target Launch

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Green Fashion

It's been well documented that every time Target unveils a new designer collaboration (think Alexander McQueen, Thakoon, and Proenza Schouler) retail mayhem ensues. Last night, at the party to commemorate Target's first eco-friendly collaboration with the organic label Loomstate, it was Hollywood darlings in the form of Elizabeth Banks, Anna Paquin, and Anna Faris who were doing all the shopping. The private event, held at at Venice Beach's Big Red Sun, previewed the price-conscious and environmentally-sound clothing (range $14.99 to $44.99) created by Scott Mackinlay Hahn and Rogan Gregory. "There's absolutely no better partner than Target for our mission, for our values, and for our aesthetic point of view culturally, " said Hahn. "This is as good as it gets. We hope to work with them again." Don't worry fellow shoppers, this incarnation of guilt-free garments will hit stores on April 19th.

Hug it Out...in an Alabama Chanin for HBO T-shirt!

Forget Barneys and Bergdorf -- the latest must-have item of the moment in New York can't be found at either of the retail meccas. Try the HBO flagship store on Sixth Avenue (yes, we said it). The premiere cable company has just debuted a limited edition collection of 100 recycled T-shirts by Alabama Chanin that is flying off the shelves.

In-the-know fashion peeps will recognize the fashion and lifestyle label that is focused on sustainability and American-made products. Founder Natalie Chanin has reworked old promotional tees from five top shows with her signature hand-stitching, embroidery, and appliqué techniques. The resulting items for men and women range in price from $65 - $85 and feature logos and key themes from "Entourage," "True Blood," "The Sopranos," "Sex and the City," and "Flight of the Conchords."

Since dressing up your cool T-shirts has already emerged as a prominent spring trend, those looking to layer with some individuality should make like Ari Gold and send an assistant to pick up a whole assortment. For those of you who are simply inspired by the down home designs, try creating them yourself : Chanin offers classes and a D-I-Y manual entitled the "Alabama Stitch Book," on her website.
