Marion Cotillard's Hair - Curly vs. Straight

Filed under: Hair Cut and Style

Marion Cotillard - Captivating with carefree curls, or sexier with sleek and straight hair? Photos: Kevin Winter, Getty Images | Jon Furniss, WireImage

Marion Cotillard became famous for her chameleon-like turn as Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose," but the actress makes a hobby out of transforming her own image off-camera, too. Especially with her various hairstyles.

Most often seen wearing her hair in beautiful, ribbon-like curls, Cotillard stepped out at the London premiere for "Public Enemies" last night (June 29) with poker-straight hair, the top half styled into a formidable pompadour. (There was a slight mullet thing going on as well -- a hair stunt only a Dior muse/Oscar-winning actress could pull off.)

Cotillard's so gorgeous, she could make a buzz cut look chic, but there is something about her curly hair that just makes her seem that much more glamorous and mysterious (to me, anyway).

Lily Allen Steals the Spotlight In Yet Another Wig

Purple reigns... for the moment. Lily Allen in one of her many Rainbow Brite-worthy wigs. Photo: Getty Images

Considering Lily Allen's built her brash reputation by kicking a paparazzo, insulting other celebs and penning explicit lyrics, it's ironic that her new attention getting M.O. is simply donning party store wigs. (Remember last week at Nobu?)

Allen took center stage at England's Glastonbury Festival wearing a wig straight out of an episode of Jem and a single white glove which the Telegraph says was a nod to the King of Pop. And that was tame compared to her incredibly skin-baring jumpsuit that showed off her slightly orange, slimmed-down figure.

Maybe it's her newfound body confidence that has her thinking that not even a crazy wig can deflect from her hotness. She just might be right.

Either that, or she was just dying to get a certain someone's attention. Before her performance, Allen was seen wandering around the festival -- in a blonde wig -- and reportedly said, "I'm going to go and wind up my ex and his new girlfriend."

No word on whether or not said ex was effectively wound up, but chances are, like everyone else, he noticed her.

For other celebs who like to mix it up in the hair color department, check this out.

Retro Hairstyles - Yay or Nay?

Can't touch this! Seriously stiff hair is big this year. From left to right, Lydia Hearst, Drew Barrymore, Kate Winslet and Agyness Deyn. Photos: Getty Images

Talk about old school glamour.

At the CFDAs, model/heiress Lydia Hearst was upholding 2009's new tradition of working a hairstyle suited to someone triple her age.

I'm not saying that Hearst's wavy, sculpted updo wasn't beautifully executed, I just felt it lacked the joie de vivre that I'd imagine a hot, rich, 24-year-old socialite might want to emote. Instead, the hair -- and consequentially, her entire look -- felt a bit stiff, safe, and dare I say it, staid.

But maybe I'm missing the point here. After all, this year, we've seen quite a few bright young things show up to fancy events with even fancier, by-the-books hairstyles (that my grandmother would be all over).

Julia Roberts - We Want Her Hair!

Filed under: Hair Cut and Style

Julia's still making waves! Photo: Ray Tamarra, Getty Images

The StyleList office was buzzing when this picture of Julia Roberts surfaced. The star looked absolutely stunning (especially her hair) as she paid a visit to the "Late Show with David Letterman" yesterday.

Seriously, does this woman age?

To achieve loose and natural waves a la Roberts, Rodney Cutler of NYC's Cutler Salon offers the following tips:

  • First, spray a heat protectant onto damp hair and comb through.
  • Next, use a product like Redken Spray Starch for hold and blow-dry hair, using your fingers to loosen curls or waves (you can blow-dry hair straight if it's very curly). Once hair is dry, part it in the center.
  • Then, starting in the back, use a medium to large barrel curling iron and wrap sections of hair while holding iron vertically. When you reach the sides and front of hair, roll the iron away from your face so curls sweep outward.
  • To finish, gently comb through curls with your fingers to loosen.

Kim Kardashian Rocks a Short Bob

Who knew a short bob could be so sexy? Photo: kimkardashian.celebuzz.com

Kim! We hardly recognized you!

At a recent photo shoot for O, The Oprah Magazine, Hollywood celeb hair stylist Ken Paves somehow managed to get Kim Kardashian's bountiful locks under a wig! (He is the master at faux hair -- you might remember he has a line of extensions with Jessica Simpson.)

This cropped bob with side-swept bangs is a big departure from Kim's usual va-va-voluminous long waves. It's way more conservative than her usual look, but since it's Kim, of course she makes it look sexy. And with a gorgeous face like that she can totally pull it off.

Do you think Kim sizzles in short hair?

AnnaLynne McCord's Hair Screams 'Ice Ice Baby!'

In the Heights! AnnaLynne and Vanilla had high hair hopes. Photos: Getty Images

All right stop -- collaborate and listen! AnnaLynne is back with a brand new invention!

Since the Eighties are back in a major way, I suppose it was only a matter of time before the style cesspool known as the early Nineties followed suit.

If you look at it that way, then AnnaLynne McCord is a trendsetter with her recent homage to Vanilla Ice's gravity-defying hair. (And on a random note, check out the similarity of their lips!)

I appreciate anyone willing to take a risk on the red carpet because aside from Paris' recent headband craze things have been a little slow in the hair department.

And while the Hollywood newbie usually gets it right, I'm just not down with this over-poufed style.

Shu Uemura's Art of Hair - Meet Ryoji and His Magic Chopsticks

Filed under: Hair Cut and Style

I took my seat at a recent press event for Shu Uemura's new hairstyling products with no clue who Ryoji Imaizumi is. By the time I left, I was obsessed with him.

Art of Hair styling guru Ryoji. Photo courtesy of Shu Uemura.

As with most things Japanese, the demonstration I was about to see would be thoroughly entertaining, a little bit beyond my comprehension, and completely awesome.

The music was Aphex Twin meets underground club. The stage was set, the model was ready. The crowd was excited. Out comes the fabled Ryoji who was more or less dressed like your typical edgy hairstylist. Except for one thing:

Chopsticks taped to his fingers.

He used them, Edward Scissorhands-eque, to style the model's hair.

Do You Cut Your Own Hair?

Filed under: Hair Cut and Style

A few years ago, a popular hair product company sent a press release about its new line of hair-cutting scissors. Unfortunately, they also sent me a pair.

Haircuts: Best left to the pros? Photo: Eyewire

I don't know what it was, but from the moment I picked them up, I was under the illusion that I'd somehow earned a cosmetology degree. So not the case.

From small transgressions, like snipping away at individual split ends, I built up to larger offenses, like "angling" the hair around my face, and "evening out" unwanted layers. These types of things rarely end well, but since I was growing out my hair anyway, I convinced myself I could pinch-hit in the styling department until my hair reached below my shoulders.

Halle Berry Takes It All Off!

Halle Berry Cuts Off Her Hair. Photo by Flynet

Just after we raved about Halle Berry's lightened locks, the 42-year-old beauty goes and chops 'em all off. Her new crop? Super short and super dark. But if anyone can pull off the all-face look, it's this foxy mama! Plus, short hair is nothing new to the Oscar-winning actress, she rocked a pixie for years.

We're thinking this is just a dress rehearsal for her most shocking cut yet -- the one involving shaving her head! Berry is set to go bald for the upcoming film "Nappily Ever After."

And while HB may go from short to long to short again without so much as a flinch, the star has a different attitude about her impending cue ball look, admitting in this month's Harper's Bazaar, "I'm scared to death. I just hope my reaction fits into the story. If it's uncontrollable screaming, it might be a different type of movie."

Stay tuned for pics of a bald Berry.

Leave a comment telling us what you think of Halle's new 'do. Plus, what should she do next? (She will be starting with a clean slate after she shaves it all off for her new movie role.)

Christo Dishes on Short Dos

Gennifer Goodwin made a seemingly overnight tress-formation, appearing at the He's Just Not That Into You premiere on February 2 with long, wavy locks. Two days later, she rocked a straight, shoulder-grazing bob. We're loving the new do - how about you?

Paris Hilton has joined the Katie & Posh Club, shrinking her long blonde locks into a chin-length crop. We say "shrinking" because it's hard keep tabs on the extension-fanatic's true lock length. But hey, when you have your own line of hair extensions (Hilton's line is called DreamCatchers), your chameleon-like hair length is your best advertisement. Before you follow Hilton's, lead check out what stylist to the stars Christo told StyleList about how to pull off a short do.

    Victoria Beckham: Short Do

"Victoria has a great bob that works with her style," says Christo. "There are not too many hair textures that can pull off this look; it has to be fine and straight." One advantage of a shorter cut? "They are fun to play with and can be very versatile. Ask your stylist how to play around with styling tools to create different looks."

    Katie Holmes: Before the Cut

When she started dating Tom Cruise, Katie's hair was long and straight.

"Katie Holmes can pull off a short cut," says Christo. "She went from a young pretty girl to a sexy woman who turns heads." But Christo warns, "Don't forget you need to be backat the salon 4-6 weeks after getting a short cut. Be prepared to put the money and time in."

    Anne Hathaway: Short Don't

"Anne's stylist played it safe and gave her a short bob cut. She's a very pretty girl but this look doesn't accentuate her beauty," explains Christo. "With her facial structure, I would go with a shorter cut like Selma Blair's."

Scalp a Celebrity and Wear Her Hair!

Whose hair do you want to try on? Images courtesy of DailyMakeover.com

Celebrity hair: Are there two less innocent words in the English language?

Think of Drew Barrymore's crazy Angie Dickinson-'do at the Golden Globes. Taking into account not only all the product which went into that thing, but also the ink and the trees and bloggers' server hours that were devoted to writing about it, that single coif probably had a carbon footprint the size of Duluth.

But admit it, you wondered what you'd look like under all that Aqua Net, didn't you?

Now, through the miracle of the Internet, you can scalp a celebrity (figuratively) and try on some of those Hollywood locks yourself. Daily Makeover is a web site that allows you to upload your own picture and transport the hair styles of stars like Rihanna, Halle Berry and of course Miss Barrymore right onto your head. And you can also try on virtual make-up.

It's the perfect place for a bit of girly fun, and also your husband's drag queen fantasies. I hope he looks better in Drew's hair than I did.

Kate's Spikey Hair - A 'Do or Don't?

Out of nowhere, it seems like everybody is obsessed with the Gosselins. Kate Gosselin from TLC's wildly successful Jon & Kate Plus 8 is rapidly approaching cultural icon status. And as it goes with most celebs du jour, her personal style, particularly her hair, is creating a lot of buzz (pun intended). At a signing for her new book Eight Little Faces, Kate showed up with a bold new style that's sure to get people talking -- but do we like it?

The cut reminds us of two things right off the bat: Victoria Beckham's hair circa 2007 and the kind of playfully rebellious, business in the front and party in the back attitude of a mullet (but a little more tasteful). We even think there's a little bit of Suze Orman in there.

Whatever it is, it's definitely on the opposite end of the spectrum from the wildly popular Palin hairdo. According to what Kate told Entertainment Weekly, her feisty new 'do is a major success:

Is Kate's do wacky and weird or hip and cool?

Jamie Lee Curtis Wigs Out in Pink

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Hair Cut and Style

Hey Activia lady! What's with the pink hair?

Jamie Lee Curtis has long been one of our Hollywood favorites. She seems so real, and obviously, she's a lot of fun. For pete's sake, the 50-year-old showed up at the Noche De Ninos Gala and Concert this weekend in a bright pink wig.

Curtis was being presented with the Courage to Care Award at the gala, which was held to benefit the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. And, it turns out the pink wig wasn't just a fashion statement -- a 15-year-old (who lost her battle with cancer) had given it to her. What better opportunity to wear it than at an event for the Children's Hospital?

We have to say, we're glad this isn't a permanent look for Curtis. However, she's far from the only star who's tried out a hair color not found in nature -- check out the gallery to see who else has gone pink (and blue, and green). Let us know who your favorite is in the comments!

Adrien Brody's Blue Hair Gets Rave Reviews

Filed under: Men, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes, Hair Cut and Style

Adrian Photo by Getty Images.

Last Thursday, Adrien Brody rolled up to a screening of The Brothers Bloom (maybe he thought it was called The Brothers Blue) with an eye-catching new do. Problem was, it consisted of roughly a dozen blue-highlighted chunks poking out of his typically messy and understated hair.

Really, Adrien? Really? All he needed was a glow stick and a pacifier to complete his "I'm a rebellious teenager" look. We're really not quite sure what's going on with this shaggy mess (hopefully those blue streaks are just extensions), and we have absolutely no idea what Adrien is shooting for -- but it definitely got our attention. Not to mention, his experimentation brings up a pretty valid beauty question: is pink, blue, orange, purple, etc. hair dye fair game for anyone over the age of 25?

Maybe Adrien got the blue streaks for an upcoming role in a movie about people who follow jam bands? That would totally explain it. Otherwise, we say leave rainbow colored hair dye to those who don't look like they need it to cover their gray.

The NY Post is claiming that Adrien's new 'do is inspired by none other than "American Idol" finalist Adam Lambert, whose glam rock style is taking the nation by storm. Again, really, Adrien? Really?
