Exclusive! Brüno on Michelle Obama's Style, Eminem and Fall Fashion

Hold onto your Prada purses people! Next Friday (July 10th) famed Austrian fashion reporter Brüno will strut his way into a theater near you. The new mockumentary (starring Sacha Baron Cohen of "Borat" fame) chronicles the faux journalist's trip from front row at Stella McCartney to the checkout line at Sears.

In honor of its release, we emailed the flamboyant trendsetter to ask his opinion about pressing fashion issues. Namely, Michelle Obama's style, the omnipresent gladiator sandal, and which world leader he'd most like to make over (hint: it rhymes with "Schmahmadinejad").

Stylelist: What do you think of Michelle Obama's style; how does it compare to yours?

Brüno: Ich can understand ze pressure zat Michelle is going through. Every day she stands next to one of ze sexiest, most powerful men in ze vorld, und has to look AMAZING, but not steal ze limelight. Exactly ze same dilemma all Bruno's boyfriends have felt. As far as First Ladies' style goes, I think she's doing a good job und compares favourably to say Nancy Reagan's 'Microwaved Barbie' look, or Barbara Bush's 'Boris Yeltsin in drag' thing.

Regarding Barack, ich am very disappointed in him so far. Vhen he kept banging on about 'Change – yes ve can!'...Ich suggest Barack, zhat you change ze record – put on Just Dance by Lady Gaga, rip off your shirt, und give us all a glimpse of vhat we voted for! I am hoping zat he vill soon declare war on Iran, so that he has to visit troops in the desert und break out the beach wear.

Paula Froelich Has Written a Book. (And Seen Nick Nolte with His Pants Down!)

Today marks the release of Page Six editrix Paula Froelich's first novel, "Mercury in Retrograde" about three very New York-y women who are bound by a common address on Sullivan Street in Manhattan (the author's actual place of residence).

Already lauded by the local literati, the new book has put Froelich in the limelight for a change. Here's how she responds:

StyleList: Are any of the stories real-life experiences translated into fictional accounts?

Paula Froelich: Absolutely, my job served as inspiration. After 9 ½ years at Page Six, I have seen and experienced some of the craziest things I never dreamed were possible. Like the Kitty Foil scene at the Met gala where she roller blades through the event causing mass destruction -- that actually happened. Just at a wedding.

Nip & Tuck Update: Q&A With Dr. David Shafer

Shows like "Dr. 90210" and, well, "The Real Housewives of New York City," have been slowly educating us on the often scary world of nips and tucks. But with fads popping up left and right, the industry is still super tricky to navigate.

StyleList asked plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer -- whom W magazine just anointed one of the hottest names in beauty -- to give us the lowdown (thankfully, in layman's terms) on how to improve what our mamas gave us. Hint: It involves Botox, a little laser lipo, and welcome advice to step off the treadmill.

Who wouldn't want to be Adrienne Bailon?

As a middle-aged male journalist I usually try to keep such thoughts to myself. But speaking with the 25-year-old triple threat who recently made the jump from Disney star (she was Chanel, lead singer of the Cheetah Girls) to MTV host I'm thinking, "Hell yeah, I'd change places with her."

"I'm hosting this new show called 'Made Challenge,'" she explained this week before heading off to film in Connecticut. As the title suggests, the show is a spin-off of the MTV hit, with the twist that young people compete towards achieving the same goal.

As a New York girl who found fame in California, and then came home again, Bailon mixes east and west coast style in her wardrobe.

From the Fragrance Frontlines - Day 1 1/2: Sperm Whales, Donna Karan, and Virgins, Oh My!

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Fragrance, Interviews, Beauty Tips

Senior Fashion Editor Sarah Cristobal is on assignment this week in France to discover what goes into creating the world's top fragrances. Read her daily blogs as she travels to perfumeries in Paris and Grasse, and dutifully observes the ooh la la of French culture.

A lot has happened since my first dispatch. The IFF tour was amazing! Oh, the things one can learn about the origins of our favorite fragrances. Here are some interesting -- and rather surprising -- facts:

  • I am not a one-fragrance kind of gal, but Balmain's Ambre Gris is one of the favorites in my arsenal of scents. In terms of fashion, the label is currently the chicest on the market, but who knew that

Balmain's Ambre Gris, a.k.a. Eau de Sperm Whale?

Balmain's latest odour (launched in 2008) is based on the rarefied excretions of the sperm whale? The mammal is a squid eater -- bones and all -- and when the skeleton is broken down in the whale's body it is eventually compacted to about the size of a football. By the time it is passed, the crush of bones is so light that it floats on the water. Apparently, oil extraction from this extremely pricey commodity smells horrid at first but eventually transforms into a sweet earthy musk. Tres chic!
  • The two main perfumeries in France are IFF and Givaudan. Together they account for the creation of most of the world's fine scents. In order to win a bid on a scent, the perfumers (or "noses") are presented with a brief by an intermediary on behalf of a production and branding company such as Unilever or Coty, Inc. Teams of perfumers then compete both internally and against outside perfumers to come up with the scent that best represents the label or celebrity for which the brief was created. Whomever wins the brief takes all, and the rest are out of luck. Can you believe doing all of that legwork and then not getting paid? Insiders say that it's considered an extremely outdated model, even among top fragrance brass.

Stila is Saved! Iconic Beauty Brand Not Going Anywhere

Photos courtesy of Stila

The beauty world -- editors, makeup artists, loyal Lip Glaze-addicted customers -- was pretty much freaking out a few weeks back when the future of Stila looked dire. Bankruptcy rumors swirled and mad dashes to Sephora to stock up on favorites like Kitten Eye Shadow ensued. Then came the news that an investment firm had swooped in at the last minute to buy the brand, but a question hung in the balance: Would the new CEO be cool enough to resuscitate the iconic brand?

For what it's worth, my bet is on yes. I caught up with Stila's new owner (the CEO of Patriarch Partners, LLC) to see what her plans are for the brand, and there's something you should know -- Lynn Tilton is a cool chick. I expected a bean counter in a conservative pantsuit and instead was faced with Lynn in a short black Versace dress and lace-up leather boots. (Already a good sign.)

"I'm not your typical CEO," she told me. Lynn has some bold ideas on how to redirect Stila, including focusing less on traditional retailing -- a move she knows will upset the big stores. Lynn says, "I'll make some people mad, but I don't care. I want to cater to the customers, not the retailers." That means amping up Stila's e-commerce site and spearheading infomercials with instructional makeup tutorials. "Stila will be about educating women on how to be beautiful," she explains.

Jake Bailey - Exclusive Interview

Filed under: Cosmetics, Interviews, Beauty Tips

StyleList's Annie Scott sat down with Jake Bailey to get a makeover and talk makeup trends for Spring 2009. For before and after shots, tips and tricks, and more information about celebrity makeup artist Jake Bailey -- who looks like Ugly Betty's Daniel Meade and works on Katy Perry and Annie Lennox, just to name a couple of his favorites -- click through our interview!

He has some very affordable MAX Factor products to recommend -- browse below!

Makeup Artist Jake Bailey Shares His Secrets

Jake Bailey - Celebrity Makeup Artist

StyleList: What would you say is the big thing in makeup for Spring 2009?

    Annie Scott

Jake Bailey and StyleList's Annie Scott

Jake Bailey: Definitely a light, bright lip, clean skin and a coat of rich black mascara. It's really, really simple, anyone can do it -- like the look I did on you yesterday. (shown)

    Annie Scott

Before (with makeup removed -- Annie would never show up like that)

SL: And you used the same product on my lips as on my cheeks!

    Annie Scott

After - The Spring 2009 Look by Jake Bailey

JB: Yeah, it's super easy. You just need a little dot or light football player marks (with the Vivid Impact Lipcolor by MAX Factor, shown here in Rose Rage), and then you blend. Spring's all about having a really light, fresh texture. Use a light liquid foundation like MAX Factor ColorGenius, which just looks like skin, sets itself and doesn't need powder. Spring is really about bright lipcolors that liven up your complexion. Just a nice strong lip, balanced out with a touch of cream blush and a rich coat of mascara give a fully finished look.

    SL: And really simple.

    JB: Yeah, really simple.

    Annie Scott

Vivid Impact Lipcolor by MAX Factor in Rose Rage

SL: And it's okay to put Vivid Impact Lipcolor on your face?

JB: Yes. Well, on your cheeks. Maybe not all over your face.

SL: But I might have a really good idea!

JB: Yeah, yeah, I mean, let me know how that goes. But it does make a beautiful cream blush. I don't know if they intended it that way, but with the texture it provides, your skin just glows right through it.

SL: And it's not gonna clog your pores?

JB: No -- it's not waxy like a lot of lipsticks I've used in the past. It just feels like a lip balm.

SL: And I had it on my cheeks yesterday and I have not broken out.

JB: Yeah, if you wear makeup, you should use an oil-based cleanser every night to really remove your makeup.

    Max Factor

    MAX Factor ColorGenius Oil-Free Foundation

SL:And why do you recommend oil based? A lot of people I know are really into oil free.

JB: Well, oil-free products like ColorGenius are great -- you don't necessarily want to put oil on your face and just let it sit there. But oil-based cleansing products actually remove oil. Oil cuts oil, it really just strips every molecule of makeup off your face.

    SL: Cool.

JB: And you'll find, when you're done cleansing, you don't feel oily at all. Your skin just feels very, very clean.

    Max Factor

Katy Perry - A Client of Jake Bailey

SL: What about bronzer? Are we bronzing this season?

JB: Well, I love bronzer! I do like the look of a tan, I think it looks healthy, but we all know the risks of sun damage. Those who have olive skin, who easily get color, respond better to self tanner than people with really fair skin or skin with pink undertones. So they can use a self tanner or go in the sun in moderation. But if you have fair skin, you know, that's beautiful. I really don't understand why so many women with pale skin are so desperate to be tan. It's so delicate and feminine and sexy. Look at Evan Rachel Wood, Nicole Kidman, Katy Perry. And it really does lend itself to being very "now," with what's in this spring. It's very angelic.

    Clean & Clear Blotting Paper

JB: Powder's not necessarily for everyone. I do use powder quite a bit -- for red carpet, music videos, television shows, I mean, anytime you're on camera or under hot lights, powder's great. But in day-to-day life -- that natural glow, that natural sheen -- is really important. I think that's what's most attractive. If you do want to use powder, I recommend blotting first, Clean & Clear makes a really good blotting paper, and then applying powder.

    drugstore.com

    Sarah Jessica Parker

SL: Did you hear that Sarah Jessica Parker uses toilet seat covers to blot?

JB: Well, you know -- in a pinch! I was just saying yesterday that the kind of makeup we were doing, which happens to be really "now," is the kind of makeup you can do in an airport bathroom. Just mix your lotion with foundation, add a little concelear, lipstick, dot lipstick on your cheeks, blend, then go into a stall, pull out a toilet seat cover and blot.

    SL: And you're all set!

JB (laughing): I don't do toilet seat covers on my clients, though, for the record.

SL: And you mix foundation with lotion to get the SPF?

JB: That's right. Our foundation doesn't have SPF. Many companies are putting SPF in the foundation, but the amount of foundation you'd have to put on to get the benefit is way more than you should probably be wearing. So, I definitely recommend mixing equal parts moisturizer and SPF and foundation. If you're looking for more coverage, definitely use the SPF first, let it soak in, then do your foundation.

MAX Factor 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper Mascara

SL: Can you tell me about the crazy business card mascara trick you were using yesterday?

JB: When I was first starting out with makeup and I was trying to learn, I was teaching myself. Mascara was a real challenge. I couldn't figure out how to get it to look the way I wanted it to look.

SL: You were teaching yourself -- you mean you didn't go to makeup school?

JB: No. I mean, I apprenticed with people like Kevyn Aucoin and Pat McGrath, and I was able to assist on shows. I certainly learned a lot more from them than I learned from myself. But this is one of the tricks that I figured out on my own.

    SL: How does it work?

With a brand new book out, "Class with the Countess: How to Live with Elegance and Flair," who better than "The Real Housewives of New York City's" Countess herself, LuAnn de Lesseps, to give us rules for remaining regal in even the most stressful shopping situations.

She's polished, polite, and here, pretty frank about not checking your manners at the store door.

StyleList: Does it matter what you wear when you go shopping? Will it influence how you are treated? Should it?

The Countess: I think first impressions are everything. When I go shopping I like to dress for the occasion. I always keep in mind I'll be changing so I wear something easy to change in and out of. I find that salespeople are influenced by how you look even if they say they are not. Why not dress to impress?

Costume Institute Red Carpet Report - If You Build It, They Will Come...

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Celebrities with Style, Interviews, Red Carpet Trends

On Monday night, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's famed staircase turned into one of the world's longest runways as catwalkers past, present, and future, strutted into the Costume Institute to celebrate "The Model as Muse" exhibition. "I love the theme!" said Lanvin's Alber Elbaz enthusiastically upon reaching the top of the steps. "It's a very important dialog between a designer and model. More than anything it's an exchange of personality and energy and I love doing that."

And he wasn't the only one feeling the love. The evening, which was sponsored by Marc Jacobs and chaired by the man himself, attracted generations of mannequins. Carmen Dell'Orefice represented the '50s, Twiggy the swinging '60s, and Lauren Hutton the divalicious '70s. For the pivotal 80s era Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer were the sole supes since Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista opted out at the last minute due to a kerfuffle between the museum and Azzedine Alaia. (Christy Turlington was never planning on attending.)

The grunge-filled 90s paid homage to the muse of all muses Kate Moss, and the evening's co-host made up for her colleagues' absences by wowing in a short gold lamé mini dress created specifically for her by Jacobs. As for the naughties? Gisele Bundchen, Natalia Vodianova, and Agyness Deyn had it covered.
