L.A. Trend Watch: Fresh Kicks

One of the hottest trends in L.A. this summer is the souped up sneaker. Ranging from limited edition punk rock Chucks, Vans by Marc Jacobs and neon Nike's, there's a sneaker out there for everyone!

Real People Wearing Crocs!

Jordan and Mike are California "beach-y keen" in summer casuals and Crocs!

That's right, Crocs! Most people know them as the love it or hate it ubiquitous rubber clog. There are many other incarnations, such as this super-comfy flip flop style. In bright, punchy colors, they make a bold summer statement.

Impress with a dress for spring and summer!

All of these ladies are dressed to impress for warm weather with what else ... Dresses!

Vests have made a big comeback this season, and they add a certain amount of polish when paired with a dress and boots.

Summer dresses with bold, colorful prints are a perennial favorite. A simple cut ensures that things don't feel to fussy or overdone. Flat, woven leather loafers add a touch of preppy chic.

Slips can work as outerwear, and this picture proves it! Pairing it with a contrasting blouse gives it the feel of a jumper, instead of a nightie. The whole look is very fun and flirty with loose wavy hair and sandals.

Grunge revival!

I just love the colors in this classic flannel paired with all black. I've been looking for a shirt just like this, maybe in black and red, to throw haphazardly over girly vintage dresses and flat sandals for summer nights. It's a grunge revival!

Here's another extreme example of the grunge/punk look. Again, I'd love the look of her ripped up layered tights with a flirty vintage dress and boots. Interesting contrasts and textures can really spice things up and give you something totally unpredictable. Check out her awesome purple mohawk!

Spring into Bright Colors

These two have punched up basic jeans with bright, rich color -- striking, wispy tops in fruity colors and leather bags in rich primary tones. The mustard-yellow on the left is one of my favorite colors and has been popping up everywhere lately, especially in terms of handbags. On the right, I simply adore the small, ladylike quilted red bag with gold chain strap (so Chanel!).

More high-waisted hotness!

Another style diva braves Spring's high-waist trend! She's mixed it up with a a cute slogan tee, retro hair and makeup, and cute little monogrammed loafers. The picture doesn't do it justice, but she had on the most amazing hot pink lipstick!

Check out the buttons on the shorts!

Cover-All Cuties!

I'm all about one piece dressing. Throw on a dress, funky jumpsuit or overalls and all you have to do is accessorize! These adorable sellers at the Melrose Trading Post prove my point with their vintage jumpsuit looks.

Vintage glasses and piled on gold charms!

I love the way she's tied her scarf.

She also makes these beautiful necklaces!

Bring on the Shades of Gray

Kristin Knauff, owner of Apartment 3 boutique, and all around it girl, is wearing one of my all-time favorite colors.
Gray was all over the runways for Spring '07, and I love this mandarin style top with black piping, simply paired with dark jeans and knee high boots.

Another great way to wear gray -- a silvery, shimmery tank!

Kewpie doll cutie!

This Apartment 3 darling looks like a sweet little kewpie doll! From the gorgeous ringlets and rosy cheeks, to the little short-shorts, she reminds me of a young girl spending an afternoon on the boardwalk in the '40s.

I'm a sucker for puff sleeves and the babydoll style of this top. I also love the black cami peeking out!

The high-waist...back in action at Apartment 3!

Not everyone can pull off the high waist but these two lovely partygoers at Apartment 3 certainly do. When done right, I love the "finished", defined look a high waist gives. It's a style that was first noticed in the '40s and '50s with button-front sailor style trousers, reincarnated in the '70s, and now back again after the ultra-low waist's reign of terror. (Remember coin slots and visible thongs?)

Ladylike vintage at Apartment 3!

I found Inessa at a recent party at one of my favorite L.A. stores, Apartment 3. She's bringing back retro, ladylike style but with a fun modern twist. Nothing about her look is too frilly or fussy, so she looks utterly hip and modern, yet totally pulled together.

Her sister gave her this beautiful antique necklace as an early birthday gift.

Cobalt blue is one of my favorite colors right now, and I love how these gloves add a dash of color!

These classic pumps with '80s flair are the perfect finishing touch. I love how they make the leg look so shapely.

The Watson Twins: Down Home Vintage Style

Singing duo The Watson Twins, best known for their work with Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis on the album 'Rabbit Fur Coat,' are fast on their way to becoming a household name, with the debut release of their new CD-EP, 'Southern Manners.' With their sweet, alt-country vocals, angelic looks and vintage style, what's not to love?

I spoke with them at a benefit for the Downtown Women's Center last week, where they shared what inspires them when it comes to fashion. Both girls see it as a creative outlet and way of expressing themselves, just like they do with their music. They also love getting creative on a budget, mixing vintage and new and loading up on accessories. Here the twins are wearing delicate vintage-y gold jewelry over sweet minidresses.

Vintage street style at Buffalo Exchange...

Amme, a manager at Buffalo Exchange, is wearing vintage Italian cycling shirt as a tunic with black leggings and boots. I love, love, love her asymmetrical haircut and fearless fashion sense.

I love her whistle necklace -- it's got big faux rhinestones all over, a big trend right now.

An Art to Fashion

Los Angeles artist Cate Nelson has a hodge-podge, eclectic sense of style poses that I love. Here she is posing with a few of her paintings. She chose to pose with the blue one in front because she said it matched how she felt that day.

Maybe it's the artist in me or nostalgia for the '90s spin-art craze, but I have a thing for anything paint splattered.

I love these cozy chunky-knit boots!

Walk to the Beat of this Rockstar's Drum

Shannon, also known as "ShanBeast," is the drummer for LA-based indie rock band The Sea Beasts. Her look is as unique as the band's incredible sound. I don't want to call it "goth" because sometimes the term is overused and that just doesn't do her justice -- but it's kind of dark, edgy -- Tim Burton's secretary maybe? All I know is that I love the long bangs and inky black hair, juxtaposed with the ivory cream of her prim blouse and high waisted skirt.

Trinkets with a found object feeling dangle around her neck.

She found this amazing bracelet made from a bent fork at a thrift store in Riverside.
