Paint & Peel Polish Makes Doing Nails Fun Again

Nail polish that's more than appealing. Photo courtesy of Sula

Just when I think I'm on my way to becoming a real adult, the fashion world keeps pulling me back.

As I drool over Balenciaga's power shoulder pads, Hilary Rhoda's bushy brows and now Sula's Paint & Peel Polish, it's clear my heart truly belongs on the other side of 1989.

About that polish: If you remember painting your tiny little digits with Tinkerbell Cosmetics BO-PO Brush-On Peel-Off Polish, you're going to freaking lose it when you try Sula Paint & Peel Polish ($9).

Fresh Puts Modern Spin On Cult Classics

New twists on our Fresh favorites. Photos courtesy of Fresh

If H&M is fast-fashion, Fresh is slow beauty.

Launching products at a considerably more relaxed and thoughtful pace than their contemporaries, co-founders Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg always make it worth the wait: Every product is delicious to use, nourishing for the skin and pretty to look at.

So when Glazman flew to London to present the brand's products in the roof garden atop a ritzy London hotel, I knew his journey was worth it. Among other goodies, Glazman showed me three incarnations of the brand's most sought-after products.

Fresh fans, rejoice.

Natural Beauty to Feed Your Earth Day Guilt

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Product Reviews, Must Haves, Beauty Tips

When I was in school, we marked Earth Day by getting down and dirty at the local pond, where we pulled out nearly everything short of a rubber boot.

Today, I buy stuff.

Sometimes it's for a noble cause: the best beauty companies are using their mega-profits to help protect and prettify our planet. And other times, I simply find that naturally based products completely sweep the floor with their more conventional (and more synthetic) peers.

So whether you plan to celebrate today by planting trees, cleaning streams, or simply surfing green sites on the Internet, here are some of the best Earth-friendly beauty products to get you started.

Critic's Choice - Five Great Fragrances For Spring

This past weekend, I slipped on open-toe sandals for the first time in 2009. I clipped the tags off of my new blue-and-white stripe-y Michael Kors tank, and I bought fresh flowers for my apartment.

That first deep breath of spring was in the air, and I was feeling it with a capital F.

If there were a way to bottle the initial excitement of the season, I would. But fortunately, a few perfumers have already gone to the trouble. I asked Tania Sanchez, co-author of the controversial book, Perfumes: The Guide, to let me know which scents are spring, uncorked.

Spring '09 - Pretty in Peach

Filed under: Cosmetics, Product Reviews, Beauty Tips

For those of you who long to be on-trend but just can't stomach the thought of rocking up to the office wearing bright pink lipstick or neon polish, fear not: I have something for you -- peach.

Soft, pretty peach is having quite a moment. More exciting than neutrals, but less in-yo'-face than this season's brights, peach makeup has been popping up everywhere that matters.

Lady Gaga's Most Questionable Beauty Move

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Celebrities with Style, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes, Product Reviews, Beauty Tips

Here's the thing about Lady Gaga that baffles me.

Her futuristic style (which we're kinda obsessed with) is light years ahead of where most performers dare to tread -- think lilac lipstick, techno-bob, and superhero underpants. So why on Earth is she so insistent on keeping that Nineties pop star tan?

"I'm fiercely tan and very orange!" she said, as reported in The Observer.

Oh, jeez, it's intentional?! I was hoping that she just couldn't see how orange things had gotten from underneath those tremendous black shields she calls sunglasses.

Hand Sanitizer Obsessed? Frais is Your Solution

Filed under: Skin Care, Product Reviews

If you've got HSOCD (that's Hand Sanitizer Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), the symptoms are clear: After a long subway ride, using a restroom, signing the check at a restaurant, or even, ahem, a handshake, you find yourself desperately digging through your purse for a mini bottle of hand sanitizer to wash away the Dirty. Evil. Germs.

Now, if you're discreet, you can keep your HSOCD under wraps, save one telltale sign - dry, flaky, itchy fingers and palms due to the heavy alcohol content of most hand sanitizers. As a victim myself, I'm all too familiar with vicious circle - apply hand sanitizer, dry out hands, pray there's a mini moisturizer in your purse, or a Sephora nearby so you can run in and use a hand cream (confession: I've even found myself applying chapstick to my fingers in times of desperation).
