Michelle Obama reminds Phillip Bloch of another First Lady

Phillip Bloch calls Michelle Obama

Like so many others, we've been impressed by Michelle Obama's polished, classic and accessible fashion style. Phillip Bloch is also a huge fan, so much so that he and Forest Whitaker's wife devised a special nickname for her: "Blackie O."

Michelle Obama on Jay Leno in J. Crew - Get The Look!

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Get the Look

Last night Michele Obama took a break from the Presidential campaign trail and made an appearance on the Jay Leno show. She talked about her husband Barack's ailing grandmother, Toots, and her daughter's lack of awe for his upcoming 30 minute T.V. special. But the big news was her stylishly cheery yellow ensemble.

Playboy economics - Do men prefer burly playmates during hard times?

Filed under: Style in the News

Do men's perception of what makes a woman more attractive change with the size of their 401K? According to a couple of Econometricians (we promise that we didn't make that word up) -- they do. So, what convincing mountain of data do they base their theory that men like larger and more robust women during times of hardship? The basic indicator of all thing that men find sexually attractive: Playboy Playmates from 1960 through 2000.

Harper's Bazaar UK releases second Swarovski studded cover

Filed under: Style in the News

Swarovski crystal is having a pretty noteworthy month here on StyleList, first Annie found this outrageous piece of crystal-encrusted luggage, and now this. Apparently, Swarovski has made a deal with Harper's Bazaar to feature small crystals arranged into stars on their November cover. They have done a crystal-studded cover before -- back in September of last year. This year, in honor of the financial meltdown of 2008 they're doing it again.

Support your candidate with your shoes

Political t-shirts? So over. Your candidate on underwear? Yes-ter-day! The newest cool way to show your support is to emblazon your candidate across a pair of Keds.

Through the magic of digital print on demand, Zazzle.com lets you put pretty much any picture on any item and sell it through their online marketplace.

Taking advantage of this technology, dozens of enthusiastic Obama supporters have customized Keds with their artistic interpretation of his likeness.

Mr. McCain also has a selection of shoes that bear his likeness, although we must admit that his supporters are both more traditional and more conservative.

We love a comfy skimmer as much as the next girl, but we're not sure how well this political statement translates into a fashion statement. At least they're easier to change than a bumper sticker.

In the gallery, see what the "shoe designers" came up with for your candidate.

Mr. McCain is ready for his close up

(Think that's pricey? Click the photo to see all the cool stuff you can buy for $5,000)

The New York Post, (which is not exactly the newspaper of record, but still, they do tend to get the juicier scoops) reports that presidential candidate John McCain has spent $5,583.43 to pay a make up artist to get him ready for his appearances.

Hey, we understand. We've always wanted to have a personal hair and make up attendant, and you know what? $6k doesn't sound like that much money considering how hard the poor girl has to work. Look at him! He's old! HD is harsh!

We're sure that Cindy "$280k earrings" McCain, paid for the cosmetic services, so it's not like it came out of his government salary. Plus, you could think of it as one more way he's stimulating the economy, by throwing a little cash at the style-worker class. So, thanks John!

Christina Hendricks' foot at the Emmys - StyleFoul!

We love Christina Hendricks, in all of her sexy babiliciousness and glory. Watching her strut across the offices of Sterling Cooper makes us want to rush out for some hardcore vintage shopping and a box of red hair dye.

Do McCain's Ferragamo loafers make him out-of-touch or stylish?

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Shoes, Celebrities with Style

In the cutthroat world of national politics, a candidate's appreciation for designer styles can sometime hurt their image as much as it can help. A year ago, pundits had a field day roasting John Edwards over his $400 haircut. Now, it looks like the elitist shoe is on the other foot -- and the blogosphere is buzzing over a pair of Ferragamo loafers that John McCain has been spotted wearing on the campaign trail.

The loafers in question retail for about $520 at Nieman Marcus -- and really, they're pretty decent-looking. While some are trying to make the point that McCain's out of touch with regular Americans, we doubt anyone's going to penalize him for his attempt at looking fashionable. Come on, when it comes to looks, he's going to need all the help he can get.

We argue that it's not his choice of footwear that makes McCain out of touch with middle-class Americans -- if anything, it's the fact that he's really freakin' old and fabulously wealthy. Duh.

Gifts for the OCD: the Bubble Calendar

We just found out about this poster sized calendar, with a bubble to pop for every day. We are nearly speechless with desire and obviously we're not we're not alone because 2008 is completely sold out.

This is a serious sized calendar at 48"x18" and it comes in both landscape and horizontal orientations. The font is designer classic Helvetica Neue. US holidays are marked and weekends are set in bold to make it easy to see them.

You can order it printed on 100 lb glossy paper for $29.95 or get a limited edition printed on clear acetate for $49.95.

And did we mention you get to pop a bubble every single day? How have we lived this long without this?

Leave your Monk jokes in the comments. We don't care. We'll be popping virtual bubble wrap while we wait breathlessly for our our 2009 calendar to arrive.

Goth fashion show at The Dark Knight premiere

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

The Dark Knight is receiving a huge amount of buzz, largely due to the astounding performance of the late Heath Ledger as The Joker. Apparently he is riveting, and this "sequel" maintains the high standards of excitement and action set by director Chris Nolan's 2005 Batman Begins.

We love us some Christian Bale around here, especially when he's dressed up, like at the film's New York premiere on July 14th. Naturally he looked devastating, and even better, everyone at the screening looked goth. They were all dressed in black, as if for a funeral, or a wake. Which in a way, they sort of were.

Fashion Week: Brazil

Filed under: Style in the News

Brazil may be more well known for their soccer team than anything else, but that isn't to say they don't know how to set a trend. Ever heard of a Brazilian wax, a Brazilian (thong) bikini or a Brazilian butt augmentation? Yeah, that's what we thought. Brazil knows what hot, so we thought that we should check out their Fashion Week, going on right now.

Lindsay Lohan is the new face of the Visa Swap UK 2008 Campaign

Wow, somebody out there is still willing to hire Lindsay Lohan! We think she's an extremely talented girl (c'mon, admit it -- you loved Mean Girls and Freaky Friday), but with this many strikes against her, many people in the industry are wondering if she'll ever grow up. Apparently the good folks from Visa over in the U.K. haven't yet realized that working with La Lohan may be a liability. They've just hired her as the face of their Visa Swap UK 2008 Campaign.
