Calvin Klein Secret Obsession - Eva Mendes' sexy perfume in stores October '08

Filed under: Fragrance, Celebrities with Style

By now you've all seen the racy Eva Mends ads for Calvin Klein Secret Obsession that were deemed too sexy (oooh, nipple!) for tv. In all the nudity hulabaloo, it's easy to forget that it was an ad for an actual product, the modern update of the iconic Obsession perfume.

Birthday best wishes to Betsey Johnson, fashion icon!

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

We could kind of say that we caught it with Kristen's post on this drool-worthy ring, but really, we almost missed the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Bestey Johnson fashion label.

Betsey and her business partner and CEO Chantal Bacon had a big bash last Friday to celebrate their long and successful collaboration, which officially started on Betsey's birthday, August 10, 1978.

She and Madonna pretty much defined style in the 80s and her signature look is just as fun and popular today as it was 30 years ago, with embellished skulls, ruffles and bright colors. To celebrate her anniversary and because of popular demand (the best reason, right?) this fall will see the release of the Betsey Johnson Vintage Collection.

T-shirts to wear up, up and away!

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Vintage and Retro, Men, Celebrities with Style, Kids and Babies

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Not much is bigger in the way of popular culture right now than superheroes, which makes geeks chic and true-believers the toast of the party (which we're finally invited to). It's time for us to blow the dust off our stash of comic books, take a deep breath and shout to the world, "I told you so!" After that it's best to drop it.

As goes popular culture, so to the world of t-shirts. While the superhero has been something of a mainstay over the years, the demand for cool shirts featuring the stars of comic and screen is now amazing (also: mighty, incredible, fantastic, spectacular, and uncanny).

Marc by Marc Resort Collection '08

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News

Designers are whipping up back-to-back collections as if they only take a couple of days, hours, or minutes to put together. Not even a week after the resort shows came to an end, the haute couture parades are in full-force right and every celebrity with even just a little bit of fashion cred is in Paris right now taking in all of the fabulous looks at fashion houses like Chanel and Givenchy.

Suffice it to say, those keeping up with all of the action via Style.com are probably experiencing a major case of whiplash right now trying to keep up with everything.

Strawberry Shortcake gets a makeover: Now she can hang with the Bratz

Don't get us wrong -- like Cher in Clueless, one of our main thrills in life is a makeover. However, when a makeover makes something we grew up loving into something totally unrecognizable, we have a problem, and that's exactly what's happening to Strawberry Shortcake (and a whole slew of other iconic 80's cartoon characters). Seriously -- check out her new look after the jump:

See what we mean?

American Greetings, which owns Strawberry Shortcake, decided to update her image to appeal to modern kids -- we don't have a problem with that (although, the high-waisted shorts she's got going on are not the way to appeal to fashionable kids today, American Greetings. Just so you know.). However, we do take issue with the fact that they changed her entire look. She has real hair, not yarn, and she's pretty instead of quirky and cute. When we played with our Strawberry Shortcake dolls as kids, we were taken away to a land of make believe -- now she looks like she belongs at the mall with her friends, the Bratz dolls.

Strawberry Shortcake will be getting a new toy line, computer-animated movie and TV series starting next year. She'll spend less time playing with her cat, Custard, and more time on a cell phone. And, you might be surprised as to who's hanging out in Strawberryland -- any characters who aren't "fruit-forward" (meaning their names make you think more of dessert than fruit) are going to be downplayed. Check out the gallery to see some of the makeovers Strawberry Shortcakes friends have received.

Other cartoons getting a facelift are the Care Bears (less chubby tummy, longer eyelashes), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and even Scooby-Doo.

Running replaces sex as #1 recommended weight control method in Japan

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

A new trend is taking over the streets of Japan, literally. People are running in huge numbers, particularly young women who live in the cities.

The fad is especially strong in trendy Tokyo, where women's corporate marathon clubs are meeting before and after work to do a few laps around the Imperial Palace. The main goal is to "stay healthy, pretty and sane" with the extra benefit of getting to show off special marathon gear from Danskin and New Balance.

Flashback: Not pink eye, pink eyeshadow

Stylelist has a how to guide for wearing colored eyeliner, which is totally fun, and balances really well with all the brights we're seeing for clothes this season.

Clicking through the looks gave us sweet 80s nostalgia. Purple eyeliner! Sparkly green! Ah, ninth grade! Then we came across a pictures of lip liner and vivid pink blush and had to laugh.

eBay WTF of the Day: Ludicrous stirrup pants

Help. . .?
These pants are totally freaking ridiculous. There, I said it.

There almost isn't more to say. We don't normally post these. We see a lot of things on eBay in this category we shall call Ludicrous.

By deeming an eBay item Ludicrous, we mean that nobody's actually going to buy it, unless they're making a costume of some kind. And really, probably not then either, because as in this case, the items tend to cost upward of the fifty cents they might be worth at a yard sale.

Wear the rock!

Do you love the 80's? Perhaps you have a fondness for the big hair and power ballads of your youth or just an appreciation for those that came before you. Holy crap, everyone here was alive in the 80's, right?

Mama: Spring 2008 collection

Here at Styledash, we have a hot, passionate little affair going on with cool and snug graphic tees. And some of our favorite come from Gabriella Davi-Khorasanee -- the founder of women's streetwear label Mama.

Known for her feminine and conscious designs, Gabirella has served up a whimsical line of seven nautical-inspired tees for her spring collection that come equipped with that slight bit of an edge that we've all come to expect and love from Mama. This time, the bite comes in the form of Blondie i.e., Debbie Harry.

Chloe Sevigny's clothing line is just what you'd expect: FUG-tastic

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

Chloe Sevigny has designed a clothing line for Opening Ceremony. You know, because she always looks so great on the red carpet. And Gary Busey is sane and Paris Hilton is classy.

I mean, yes, I get it -- Chloe Sevigny loves the '80s and early '90s the way Sharon Stone loves to wear dead animals. And both are horrible crimes against nature. And, you know, I understand that we can't control her when she makes public appearances -- that's for a stylist, or an alligator wrestler, or someone more daring than myself to handle. However, allowing the girl to design clothes that other people are supposed to wear? She must be stopped.

I looked through the collection, and I think I found a pair of shoes I might wear. In the yard. If I was sure none of my neighbors would stop by. I also saw a few pieces that scream "Laura Ashley's Ladies of the Night." Good grief -- a woman should never have to worry about whether a rose pattern on her leggings makes it look like she has camel toe. Say it with me now ... SexAY!
