French Women Don't Use Brushes

"Does anyone here even own a brush?"

I posed this question to my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago while chic-spotting in Paris. Whether we were riding the Metro or cheers-ing at the Plaza Athénée, every girl worth looking at appeared as if she hadn't seen a comb in days.

And yet they all looked painfully chic.

The look wasn't messy per se, but rather lived-in and piece-y, with little crinkles and imperfect edges, à la Lou Doillon, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and even a touch Audrey Tautou in her new Chanel No. 5 commercial.

Audrey Tautou's Chanel No. 5 Commercial - Behind the Scenes Sneak Peek!

One of the most memorable fragrance commercials of the last few years has to be Nicole Kidman for Chanel No. 5 -- it was romantic and beautiful and we could never bring ourselves to fast-forward through it. And now, we're ready for the newest short film from Chanel: Train de Nuit, starring Audrey Tautou. We hope you're ready, too, because we have a sneak preview of an image (above) as well as a behind-the-scenes video of the making of the film!

Tautou is the perfect choice for this campaign for a number of reasons (some of which are outlined in the video below), but perhaps the most important (and obvious) is that she's portraying a young Coco Chanel in the upcoming biopic.

The commercial will be released to the public tomorrow, which is exactly 88 years to the day from when Chanel No. 5 itself was introduced. And, just in case you're missing the symbolism, that date would be 5/5, reflecting Chanel's superstitions regarding her lucky number.

Watch Chanel movies by the buttload - Tip of the day!

We love us some Chanel and are smitten with the idea of a slew of biographies about Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's life. And first up in the series, was the Lifetime biopic titled Coco Chanel. Though the girl playing a young Gabrielle Chanel was believable, all American Shirley McClaine was not. Bummer!

Hats for Chanel

While the details surrounding the Lifetime network Chanel biopic have been kept secret, there's a little more info to go around on the upcoming Chanel feature film starring French actress, Audrey Tautou.

Stephen Jones, hat maker extraordinaire and regular Alexander McQueen cohort, will be creating hats for Tautou as she plays Coco Chanel in her younger years in the film.

Audrey Tautou for Chanel No.5?

As we mentioned earlier, the legendary Coco Chanel has two film biopics coming out this year that chronicle her life as the designer of the iconic Parisian fashion house that we've all come to know and love.

Shirley MacLaine will star in the television adaptation set to air on the Lifetime TV channel, which will follow Chanel's later years returning to Paris, after exiling herself in Germany and Switzerland during World War II.

Meanwhile, French actress Audrey Tautou has been tapped as the lead in the Chanel feature-length movie, Coco Avant Chanel. And according to a little rumor courtesy of WWD, Tautou may also be fronting the equally fabulous Chanel No.5 perfume campaign.

On the scene: Just in case you didn't believe the 90s were back...

-As proof the 90s have returned, check out this video by Tilly and the Wall -- the Nebraska-spawned indie-pop outfit adored by hipster types everywhere. [via fashionindie]

-Alicia Douval, some British "model" famous for getting it on with celebrities and then telling the tabloids, is really proud of her 12-year-old daughter. Not because the tween made her junior high soccer team, scored an A in algebra, or got a bunch of Girl Scout brownie points -- but because she wants a "boob job" (so she can be famous like Britney Spears!). While she admires her daughter's enthusiasm, Alicia thinks it's best to wait until she's older. You know, like 16. [Sun]

Audrey Tautou to play Coco

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

French actress Audrey Tautou has signed on to play the role of Coco Chanel in a upcoming film about the visionary designer. The as-of-yet-unnamed film was announced earlier this week at the Cannes film festival. Directed by Anne Fontaine, the feature film will chronicle the early life and young adulthood of the celebrated fashion house matriarch.

Obviously, this is a great role for Tautou, and I'm sure she'll knock it out of the park. But I have to wonder if Audrey is getting a little sick of playing the same role in all of her films. Wide-eyed, precocious French gamine has to get old after a while.

Style Icon: A Woman is a Woman

Of course, any film directed by Jean-Luc Godard is going to be dripping with style. But of his impressive oeuvre, Godard's 1961 movie "Une femme est une femme" has to be my favorite. The film stars Anna Karina as strip-tease artist named Angela. Angela wants to have a baby, but her boyfriend Emile refuses. While the characters are bit on the predictable side -- an intentionally immoral character who wants to start a family life of respectable -- the costumes, hair and makeup in this film are mod French at its best. Angela has an amazingly chic brunette hairdo, fluttering fake eyelashes and sassy bright red tights. If you thought that Audrey Tautou was adorable as Amelie, trust me, you'll love Anna Karina as Angela. Sure, she's a little stupid -- but who cares -- a woman is a woman!
