Fall 2009 Fashion Week - Backstage at Band of Outsiders and Boy

Band of OutsidersSHOW: Band of Outsiders

MAKEUP: Dick Page for Shiseido

HAIR: Tadashi Harada

BEAUTY SHAPSHOT: Schoolgirl in the City

THE SCOOP:
At Boy by Band of Outsiders, a pared-down approach to makeup and hair reflected the line's East Coast, prep aesthetic.

Dick Page for Shiseido tailored the makeup to each model, using a sharp brown or black eye pencil around the eyes before smudging it slightly with a flat brush dipped (very conservatively) in makeup remover. His explained his choices for each model as "very subjective," basing his decision on eye shape and their looks for the show.

The hair design shared a similarly undone, youthful feel. (Stylist Tadashi Harada described the concept as "supernatural.")

Casual, glossy waves were set by rolling sections into a version of a very loose bun. Harada said he simply ran a hair creme through dry strands to give them extra shine and separation.

Band of Outsiders Fashion Week Invitation

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Fashion Week

The fashion week invite from Band of Outsiders and Boy is a digital image of mail. We love the line, show above, "You should totally come." Best idea we've heard all week. We'll totally be there, to the max extreme. Our soundtrack suggestion: "Return to Sender" by Elvis.

Band of Outsiders

Scott Sternberg looks thrilled to pose for this picture during his presentation for S/S '09 Band of Outsiders men's wear and Boy women's wear during New York Fashion Week. Actress Kirsten Dunst modeled the women's lookbook and was at the collection's video presentation.

Band and Boy are both slimmed out takes on classic American sportswear in the vein of traditional companies like Brooks Brothers. The fabrics and rtw elements are conservative and traditional in many ways but feature cuts and fits for today. For us, Band is pretty much the pace setter for contemporary, tailored trends.

Like several of his contemporaries (like Obedient Sons, Thom Browne, Brooks Brothers and many others we can't name), master tailor Martin Greenfield produces the blazers and tailored elements. So the quality is easy to trust. In person, Sternberg says he's intersted in "clothing," rather than "fashion." That might sound funny from a guy whose ties and clothes pop up in all the leading fashion titles. But it's also a way of saying he's got long term goals. That makes us happy.

CFDA award for Band of Outsiders

Congratulations to Scott Sternberg and Band of Outsiders on taking home an award last week for Emerging Talent in Men's Wear from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Awards are given for a full year's work, rather than a specific season or collection. Shown above, a signature look from Band of Outsiders: double breasted, heather grey tweed suit, racoon fur trapper hat, Band of Outsiders for Sperry Top-Sider loafers.

The company has been fronting the return of American tailored trends, but with slimmed out proportions. Some production and the made to measure program are even with master tailor Martin Greenfield, whose known for his work with Brooks Brothers. In fact, wouldn't Sternberg be the perfect designer to take on Black Fleece after Browne?

Round two: Gap Design Editions

Right on the heels of its collaboration with Pierre Hardy, Gap is gearing up to release its new round of Design Editions white shirts this month.

This go around, Threeasfour, Band of Outsiders, Michael Bastian, and 3.1 Philip Lim have been tapped to re-work the classic buttoned-down shirt ($78-$88) -- while Philip Crangi was enlisted to create a pair of chic black and white resin cuffs ($45).

The adorable little Threeasfour dress and Lim tops have our names written all over them and will be in our closets once the complete Gap Design Editions collection rolls into stores on April 15.

Meanwhile, Gap's online store has just added two more styles of Pierre Hardy's sandals: Printed wedges and ankle-strap flats.

Happy Shopping!
