London ditches initiative to ban 'size zero' models

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Vintage and Retro

Despite the fact that men prefer size 10, the idea that skinny models = tons of women with body image issues has been a hot topic for crusading do-gooders for decades. But with all the outrage over the supposedly sickly-looking models, nobody's ever been able to put a stop to the anorexic reign of size zeros. Even now, the UK's best chance at banning "unhealthy" models in the looks like it's wilting away.

The British government has been eyeing new regulations that would require catwalk models to pay for a £500 ($933) health exam and certificate before they could do any work on the runway. While we think that seems kinda steep, it actually gathered a lot of support. Now, without similar bans in major fashion cities like New York or Milan, London is worried about all kinds of negative fallout -- especially at London Fashion Week.

Other, less-severe measures are being put in place to protect the health of British models, like promoting a drug and alcohol free backstage environment. Why alcohol-free?

What's your idea size? Are you trying to cram into a size 12, or starving yourself into sizes only models can wear? If you're like most women surveyed by the UK's Fabulous Mag, your preferred size is probably a six.

Too bad most men don't agree.

Tip of the day: Rio grande

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Just about every supermodel working today hails from Brazil in particular. Think about it – Gisele Bunchen, Adriana Lima, Ana Beatriz Barros, Fernanda Motta, Raica Oliveria, Jeisa Chiminazzo, Isabeli Fontana, Alessandra Ambrosio, Raquel Zimmerman, Aline Nakashima. Even if you don't recognize the name, Google it and you'll certainly know the face.

It must be something in the water that gives them makes them so desirable -- such gorgeous faces, lush hair, itty bitty waists, round booties and big busts. Or maybe it's just South America's big "what up" to plastic surgery.

No matter. The point is they are all stunning. Even if you don't look like you hail from the exotic banks of Rio de Janeiro, you can still capture the same exotic lifestyle as all of these lovely ladies.

Tip of the day: Suit up part 4, Tall

Filed under: Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie, Style Tip of the Day

Oh those lanky, leggy girls who can wear just about anything. Yes, that means the lucky few like Whitney Port, Blake Lively, Paris Hilton, and the fierce (and seriously scary) Naomi Campbell.

We dedicate the last "Suit up" installment to those long ladies that we secretly despise for their limby... uh... ness.

Tip of the day: You are what you eat

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Juicy! There is no denying the truth behind the phrase, "You are what you eat." A perfect example is the huge zit you always get after housing a greasy pizza. You can also put a positive spin on the saying and change the way you eat for good.

Summer is the best time to kick start better eating habits for your skin, hair, body, and even your mind. There is so much juicy fruit and yummy grilled chicken around that it's easier to say no to macaroni salad and the ice cream man.

Dove's campaign for "Real Beauty" was Photoshopped

Filed under: Style in the News, Cosmetics, Skin Care

Remember when we were all in love with Dove because they ran an ad campaign featuring "real" women? Well, kind of real -- clearly they weren't going to use fat or unattractive people, but at least the women in the ads were of more normal stature, and not Photoshopped to completely unrealistic proportions.

Or were they?

Fat and rich: Preferred by 3 out of 4 American women

Filed under: Style in the News

Ladies: would you rather have Jennifer Aniston's body, or a million bucks?

If the results from a new poll by Women's Day magazine and AOL Body are any indication, three out of four women would prefer to be wealthy...instead of healthy. This was in spite of the fact that 30 percent admitted feeling "uncomfortable or ashamed" about their bodies, and 37 percent said they wished they could "be thinner."

So...it'd be great to look like a celeb, but it'd be better to be loaded? I guess that makes sense -- when you're rich, everyone is basically required to say you look great, even if it isn't true. And with that kind of money you could buy an endless supply of fancy-shmancy body-shaping undergarments that might fool the casual onlooker into thinking you had a beach bod -- but wouldn't it feel better knowing you had the physique of a movie star?

I guess not. Regardless, you can read the entire poll for yourself in the February 12 issue of Women's Day, which is available in newsstands starting January 22.

Curvy women are smarter than skinny women

Filed under: Style in the News

Sick of guys who never make eye contact because they're so focused on your, um, more obvious assets? Tired of people assuming you're a bimbo just because you have a killer figure?

Never fear ladies! New research published in London's Sunday Times reveals that curvy women are smarter than those with straight or round bodies. Not only that, women with hourglass figures are more likely to have intelligent children.

Scientists think this might be part of the reason men are more attracted to women whose waists are smaller than their hips (even when compared to women who are slimmer overall).

So ladies, next time you get sick of looking at stick figure models, just remember: not only do real men find you more attractive, but, chances are, you're smarter than anyone you'll see on the catwalk.
