Brüno's Big Day

Filed under: Style in the News

With TV commercials airing seemingly every 10 minutes, endless photos of outlandish outfits around the world, several magazine covers and a much-hyped appearance on the "MTV Movie Awards," you may feel the new Sacha Baron Cohen movie, "Brüno," has already run its course.

Oh, wait. It actually doesn't open in the U.S. until tomorrow (July 10).

Expect the excitement to continue. Brüno's latest appearance was just this morning on NBC's "Today" show with Matt Lauer. Clad in a sparkly silver jumpsuit, he offered up lots of nervous energy, plenty of offensive remarks, and of course, a few good laughs.

Cohen's genius has always been the ability to make even the most straight-faced among us chuckle, though we are trying so hard not to. (Check out what he has to say about our president and his fashion-favorite wife here.)

And as Brüno, a super-fabulous, super-conceited and super-silly gay Austrian journalist, he gives fashion a funny name. Get your tickets now.

Exclusive! Brüno on Michelle Obama's Style, Eminem and Fall Fashion

Hold onto your Prada purses people! Next Friday (July 10th) famed Austrian fashion reporter Brüno will strut his way into a theater near you. The new mockumentary (starring Sacha Baron Cohen of "Borat" fame) chronicles the faux journalist's trip from front row at Stella McCartney to the checkout line at Sears.

In honor of its release, we emailed the flamboyant trendsetter to ask his opinion about pressing fashion issues. Namely, Michelle Obama's style, the omnipresent gladiator sandal, and which world leader he'd most like to make over (hint: it rhymes with "Schmahmadinejad").

Stylelist: What do you think of Michelle Obama's style; how does it compare to yours?

Brüno: Ich can understand ze pressure zat Michelle is going through. Every day she stands next to one of ze sexiest, most powerful men in ze vorld, und has to look AMAZING, but not steal ze limelight. Exactly ze same dilemma all Bruno's boyfriends have felt. As far as First Ladies' style goes, I think she's doing a good job und compares favourably to say Nancy Reagan's 'Microwaved Barbie' look, or Barbara Bush's 'Boris Yeltsin in drag' thing.

Regarding Barack, ich am very disappointed in him so far. Vhen he kept banging on about 'Change – yes ve can!'...Ich suggest Barack, zhat you change ze record – put on Just Dance by Lady Gaga, rip off your shirt, und give us all a glimpse of vhat we voted for! I am hoping zat he vill soon declare war on Iran, so that he has to visit troops in the desert und break out the beach wear.

Brüno GQ Cover Treated as Pornography in Chicago

Filed under: Style in the News

Aside from making some readers mildly uncomfortable, what harm can Brüno's nude GQ cover do? One newsstand in Chicago isn't willing to find out. The New York Times reports that the newsstand used blinders (the black panels that often hide the covers of traditional nudie mags) to hide Brüno's body.

But what about Jennifer Aniston's naked cover last year, you ask? Well, although this particular Chicago newsstand left it out there for the world to see, another high-profile newsstand did not -- the main newsstand in Grand Central Terminal covered up Ms. Aniston's flawless figure.

Brüno Gets Naked for GQ

Brüno in the buff. Photo courtesy of Mark Seliger/GQ

His movie hasn't even come out on our shores yet, but Sacha Baron Cohen's alter-ego, Brüno, is verging on overexposure -- and frankly, the entertainment value is so high, I don't mind.

On the cover of GQ's July issue (out on newsstands June 23), SBC's gay Austrian fashion journalist character poses in the buff, perhaps a not-so-subtle allusion to the magazine's recent (and mildly scandalous) cover featuring Jennifer Aniston.

Bruno Steals Marie Claire Spotlight

There's something different about the July issue of British Marie Claire (on stands now)... Bruno has taken over! Sasha Baron Cohen's latest alter-ego (a gay Austrian fashion reporter) is busy promoting himself and the upcoming movie, "Bruno," in true SBC form (read: no holds barred!).

Just this week Bruno got a little too close for Eminem's comfort at Sunday's 2009 "MTV Movie Awards," and now he's needled his way onto the cover of the British fashion mag.

Lego Models Rock JC/DC's Runway Show - Plastic Fantastic

As we've seen with Lego's awesome anniversary edition celebrity figurines, many things in life (Amy Winehouse for instance) are way cooler in LEGO form. Well, apparently experimental French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac took that idea and ran with it. He teamed up with France's 4-H and The Lego Group to debut his Spring/Summer collection on the virtual stage. We think it's possibly the most fascinating runway show we've ever seen.

Sascha Baron Cohen Storms the Stella McCartney runway today

Filed under: Style in the News

He's back, people! After causing a scene at the Agatha Ruiz de La Prada show in Milan a couple of weeks ago, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's alter ego -- gay Austrian fashion journalist Bruno -- popped up at the Stella McCartney show in Paris to create a bit of mayhem for the cameras.

Vogue UK
reports: "With his red thong clearly visible above his jeans, the comedian - who was virtually unrecognisable in a flamboyant leather gilet, with his slicked-down hair dyed blonde and brown - sucked Tampax, clapped along to the music and generally disgruntled the front row by continually pushing aside those sitting in front of him for a better look at the models."

It's worth noting, though, Bruno's attempt to snatch the limelight away from the girls in Stella's show didn't work that well, considering the lush designs they were donning were much more fierce than Bruno's runway stomp.

Janet Jackson's underwear is coming!

Filed under: Style in the News, Swimwear and Lingerie, Celebrities with Style

As Kyle reported earlier, Miss Janet Jackson has a new fashion line coming out. News about her plans is coming out slowly, but we know the underwear line, logically, is coming first.

This week the press was abuzz with the latest, that she will create the lingerie line in partnership with Australian designer Bruno Schiavi (a.k.a. "the one who actually knows about wearing underwear.")

We'll be able to start buying Janet's bras and panties in November. Miss Jackson has declared that all of the items will fit well and be under $40, but no word on whether or not she'll star in any of the ads herself. She's been looking pretty good lately, so we can hope!

Is Bruno ready for his close-up?

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Celebrities with Style

With the Borat movie scheduled to hit theaters in early November, rumors have already started to fly about the possibility of a feature film starring another Sacha Baron Cohen alter ego. This time, instead of following around a reporter in a bad suit from Kazakhstan, the film will center around the character of Bruno, a wildly flamboyant fashion reporter from Austria. Bruno, who calls himself the "Voice of Austrian youth TV," wows audiences with his campy, fashion show shenanigans and his embarassingly indulgent interviews with designers and models.

Universal Pictures has just secured the rights to produce this film for $42.5 million. Considering that this film will probably consist of crashed fashion shows and interviews with C-list celebrities, $42.5 million seems pretty steep. But then again, who I am to say "Ich don't think so!" to the Bruno movie?
