Helena Bonham-Carter and the tale of the scary hair day(s)

Filed under: Hair Care, Celebrities with Style

The shiny perfection of a professional blowout is dreamy. We figure that's the best part about being a celeb, having a stylist to do your hair and make up before every appearance. The mystery is why, in the name of St. Joan Rivers On The Red Carpet, do so many of them show up with ratty hair and unflattering makeup?

Stylelist has a post about good hair/bad hair with some doozies. The Olsens are definitely big offenders, but they have nothing on Helena Bonham-Carter. We adore her, but her hair...words fail.

We know everyone can't be Cate Blanchett, but the world would be a better place if more of them tried to. Revisit Helena's many dramatic "appearances" in the gallery.

Cannes Film Festival: Behind the scenes with a red carpet photographer

Filed under: Events: On the Scene

Michael Buckner is a fashion and celebrity photographer who travels around the world taking pictures on the red carpet. He gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the hottest entertainment industry events.

Here we go. I've beaten flight delays, jet lag, sharing a room the size of a closet, and driving a scooter for the first time in my life.

Before my Chopard party, I went over to the Hotel Majestic Cannes Barrière to catch some of the Jury Panel leaving to the opening night ceremony for "Blindness." Sat around for an hour with French fans with point and shoot cameras, until Mischa Barton showed up with her over the shoulder glamour. She was followed by the always classy Faye Dunaway, then Natalie Portman in a stylish purple strapless dress. And I don't know who Amira Casar is, but I dig her meter long bow tie and the checkerboard skirt. Is it suitable for Cannes?

After that it was off to Chopard, who hosted a party celebrating Italian designer Alberta Ferretti. Singer/actress and all around lick Juliette Lewis disc jockeyed the party where she played disco, techno and a few of her own tunes. Australian actress Cate Blanchett posed with the designer and a few friends.

Conclusion? Purple is already a graceful theme for ladies this year. We'll see how much more comes out. Also, Alberta Ferretti works well with the larger jewelry of Chopard -- definitely a nice combination.

Oscar Coverage: Battle for best dressed pregnant women -- Jessica Alba vs. Cate Blanchett

I was about to put Jessica Alba at the top of my best dressed list -- then I saw Cate Blanchett. Sorry, Jessica, you really do look beautiful, but Cate is, and always will be The Queen.

Both pregnant women were gorgeous and glowing in purple. Jessica went the feathered route using the birdage to draw attention to her newly (naturally) enhanced cleavage. She is in her third trimester, by the way! I had no clue she was that far along. Her bump doesn't look that big yet!

In my eyes, though, Cate wins the battle of the preggo celeb because of her lovely unique neckline and and the unique patterns on the bottom of her dress. Really, I love her as an actress, so this woman can do no wrong in my eyes. And pregnancy suites her. She's one of those insanely lucky women who gets even hotter when she's knocked up.

Style according to Burger King?

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

We all have our own ideas about what makes someone a style icon. For me, it's some combination of a free spirited sense of what is flattering -- like Cate Blanchett. For other people, the criteria might be something as simple as always looking great -- like Nicole Kidman. A new video on YouTube, produced by P. Diddy and Burger King seems to have an all together different idea about the definition of style. In a generous assessment, the video suggests that style is really about "having it your way."

Watch it for yourself:

Don't get me wrong, P. Diddy is one stylish man, and I can't deny that they have a point about the relationship between "having it your way" and being a stylish person, but that doesn't answer my underlying question about this video.

What does Burger King have to do with style?
