Dramatic Updos by Sebastian and Wella at Catherine Malandrino

Filed under: Runway Trends, Hair Cut and Style

Once again designers paired dramatic hair and makeup with their designs during the Fashion Week shows. We loved the punk/retro 40s look sported by models for Catherine Malandrino, and were excited to get a look at the backstage mechanisms that brought it to life.

Catherine Malandrino Kicks the New Year with BlueNefertiti

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Celebrities with Style

Catherine Malandrino welcomed the new year with her signature New York-meets-Paris vibe. Last week, at her Meatpacking District boutique, the designer hosted Celia Faussart, aka BlueNefertiti of Les Nubians, for an intimate set of jazzy hip-hop. Guests like Kiera Chaplin, Cucu Diamante, Freddie Leiba and Philip Bloch sipped on "blue stuff," (okay, fine, it's called Hypnotiq). Eric has extensive event photos posted here. In the end, we all agreed, the jam session was outta sight. Thanks, Catherine!

Model Nicole Trunfio Joins Make Me A Supermodel

nicole and tyson for make me a supermodelBecause of the addictive foolishness and sheer nonsense that takes place each season on Tyra Banks' America's Next Top Model, it's easy to understand why so many people may have overlooked the much more sane model experience on Bravo TV called Make Me A Supermodel. But don't fret! The show is back for a second season and it's also got some new faces.

I want that! Alicia Keys in Catherine Malandrino

Songbird Alicia Keys was casual and cool in an appearance on MTV's TRL. Her girly Malandrino Darling sweater was offset but a pair of comfy Akademiks jeans. But these weren't just any jeans. Friends, these jeans are stitched in Godiva. Not only can you eat creamy Godiva chocolate, you can wear it too!

Alicia set the simple pieces off with a pair of hoop earrings and a cool silver Nooka watch.

• Akademiks jeans, Macys, $60

• Malandrino Darling sweater, Special order at Catherine Malandrino, $525

• Nooka Zoo watch, Nooka, $265

Catherine Malandrino S/S '09

Catherine Malandrino held her S/S '09 runway presentation at Chelsea Art Museum. Her construction and draping are flawless and, even, hypnotic. We especially like the elegant, chain detailing that came out in a few iterations, and the stone montage insets, both shown below. The stonework isn't hard to find elsewhere, but Malandrino just has superior quality craftsmanship and tasteful incorporation.

There was also a timely revisit to her "Flag" collection, the Statue of Liberty popped up as both print and silhouette. But the highlight is really just the different dress riffs and draping variations.

CUT-IT-OUT Jersey Collection by Yelena Konovalova

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

I'm really intrigued by the bold, graphic prints of CUT-IT-OUT, a collection of jersey clothing and accessories created by Russian-born designer Yelena Konovalova. Yelena grew up studying art in St. Petersburg before moving to New York to immerse herself in the world of fashion design, first as a student at Parsons and later as Design Director for Catherine Malandrino.

The women's long sleeve Man Woman Man shirt is my favorite piece from the new collection, which features innovative cotton jersey clothing for both men and women. These are not your average t-shirts. Yelena created these single color designs through a process of cutting and folding paper ... although these pieces are probably much more intricate and interesting than those paper snowflakes you made in elementary school. The current lighthearted collection of limited edition pieces was inspired by Russian folk art and pagan fairytales. These would be the perfect comfy yet stylish clothes to spend your weekend daydreaming away in.

Prices range from $30-$120. Available at CUT-IT-OUT.net and Smashing Darling.

Cybershopping is dangerous in more ways than one

shoppingI recently read an article in Wired News that discussed at length our increasingly online culture. The article focused mostly upon how technology has affected dating and other interpersonal relationships, but what I (of course) immediately began thinking about was how the Internet has affected shopping.

I have an almost sickeningly stereotypical storyline. I'm that girl who always loved clothes, had a limited clothing allowance while growing up, went to college with an "emergency" credit card, and singlehandedly bankrolled Arden B and Nordstrom's shoe department for a couple of years. Thankfully, the evil credit card companies have some ethical standards federal regulations and don't can't give astronomical credit limits to 18 year olds, or I would still be paying off those bills.

However, I cannot imagine the damage I could have done had I been given the kind of unlimited access to the information superhighway available to today's consumers. Upon typing "credit card for students" into Google, I get 7,520,000 results in 0.14 seconds. A search for "designer brand online shopping" yields 3,570,000 pages.

Yikes.
