New Phone Face-Off - The iPhone 3G S vs. The Palm Pre

Filed under: Style in the News

With so many new features, choosing between these two new sleek phones is enough to make your head spin. Luckily, there's probably an app for that. Photos: Courtesy of Apple | Courtesy of Palm

While we StyleListas are extremely well equipped to figure out which new handbag to buy, the same doesn't necessarily hold true when it comes to choosing, say, the latest cell phone (if they're even called that anymore).

That's why we thought it best to turn the debate over to gadget guru and self-proclaimed geek, Joshua Fruhlinger. As Editorial Director of Engadget.com, Switched.com, TUAW.com and DownloadSquad.com, he knows a thing or two about tech specs, and incidentally, a lot about style. Here's to geek chic!

Unless you've been hiding in a media dead zone lately, you know that Apple's newest miracle phone, the iPhone 3G S, launched today.

This new phone may look exactly the same, but it's faster, shoots better pictures, sports improved GPS navigation, and doubles the amount of memory (compared to last year's iPhone 3G).

But you might also know that Palm, the company that nearly died off with its long-in-the-tooth Treo, recently released a new touch screen handset called the Pre. This phone not only has a touch screen with iPhone-like gestures, but it also has a slide-out keyboard for those of you who don't like to tap glass when texting your friends.

Maria Sharapova Shows Off Light-Up Cell Phone Dress

Your dress is calling again! That's what you might hear if you wore the Sony-Ericsson Bluetooth-enabled dress.

Tennis star and Sony-Ericsson spokesperson Maria Sharapova showed off the tech-meets-fashion prototype this week in London. But don't get your hopes up: The dress was a one-off project by 20-year-old London College of Fashion student Georgie Davies.

Sony-Ericsson teamed up with the design school to explore the relationship between technology and fashion, and more than 80 students competed to have their design showcased in the front window display of iconic British retailer Liberty. (Having Sharapova "Vanna White" it can't hurt, either.)

According to Davies, she wanted to find a way to alert a person when their mobile phone rings in a noisy bar or club. The result? A cocktail dress made up of interactive scales, inspired by butterfly wings. When the phone rings, the dress subtly lights up, alerting the user that she has a call.

Would you wear something like this? Creative genius or fashion disaster? Tell us below in a comment.

Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley Ringtones - Vogue Tones

Filed under: Accessories, Celebrities with Style

Anna Wintour talks on his cell phoneWe've never been to fond of customized ringtones, we usually try to find the one that sounds as much like a phone ringing as possible, although it getting tough these days. Now, that's entirely possible, thanks to Cityfile's Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley ringtones.

Prada Releases a Bluetooth Watch - Awesome Stuff We Don't Need

Prada Link Bluetooth watchWhen it comes to mixing fashion and technology, it appears that designers on both fronts are rushing to team up and blur the lines -- that way they can charge $817 for a device that's probably technologically inferior to the $200 iPhone. One of the products stemming from one of these partnerships is a curious little LG Prada Link wristwatch that communicates via Bluetooth to the new Prada II phone. How cool, sort of.

Polo from your palm

Filed under: Style in the News

Haven't you ever walked by a store window, or seen an ad for something and thought, "Boy, I'd like to buy that right now without setting foot in a store"? Ralph Lauren is working hard to make that happen, by launching into mobile commerce (m-commerce) which will allow potential consumers to scan a code on a display, ad, or mailer with their phones and shop for the Polo items they adore.

To do this, the company will use Quick Response Technology, which is already popular in Asia and Europe. This makes Polo the first luxury retailer in the U.S. to do so.

Giveaway winner: Motorola Bluetooth hands-free headset

Congratulations to Kristi, the lucky winner of the Motorola Bluetooth hands-free headset.

Thanks to everyone who entered the drawing by sharing your funniest phone mishap. If we learned anything, it's that anything liquid acts as a magnet for cellphones. This is especially true of toilets, where at least half of your mishaps happened.

Here is the mishap from Kristi:

My ringtone for my husband is "I touch myself" by the Divinyls. At the time we had a friend and her hearing impaired son living with us. I left my phone on the kitchen counter during a visit from the child's case worker. In the middle of her asking about the living arrangements and stability of the home, my husband called sending "I touch myself" all through the house! Luckily, the case worker had a good sense of humor!

Want to be a winner? Check out this week's giveaway, a cool clutch from Emma Gordon!

On your phone and doing ten other things? You're normal.

Filed under: Style in the News, Steals and Deals

Have you ever found yourself holding car keys, answering the phone, juggling a bag of groceries and trying to keep a toddler from throwing himself into the path of a speeding Fedex truck?

How about leading a conference call, taking notes, eating lunch and formatting a presentation, all at once? Or making dinner, talking to your mother, letting the dog in, and paying your bills online?

We're positive you said yes to at least one of these scenarios. And, did you notice that the phone is a common denominator in these stories? Cell phones are even more leash-like than those long cords that tether those olive-colored kitchen telephones, and no one has time to "just" talk on the phone.

A valet for what's in your pockets

Filed under: Haute Home, Accessories, Men

Being a modern urban gentleman, you nearly always carry the burden of at least 5 important yet annoying objects in your pockets. If you don't see yourself as a rightful candidate for the European cary-all man-purse, then you've got a tough question to answer at the end of each day: what to do with your cell phone, keys, wallet, cuff-links, and ninja throwing stars?

While toting around a desk drawer's worth of junk is an inconvenient fact of modern life, the way you deal with it is what separates the international men of mystery from Joe 6-pack. A device like this Nautica Dresser Valet could take you one step further towards an enlightened state of manliness. Not to mention, you could finally leave the house without having to spend 15 minutes looking for your keys. There's all kinds of feng shui potential locked into this modestly priced hunk of wood.

Hot new accessory gives men a buzz in all the right places

Every now and again I stumble upon an accessory so ingenious, so visionary, that I'm forced to scream aloud: "Holy crap! Why didn't someone think of that before?"

This brings me to the Vibra Exciter -- an unblushing amplification of the pleasurable experience that is a cell phone buzzing in your pocket.

You've undoubtedly heard of phone charms -- the little bits of mobile phone bling that generally adorn the cells of junior high school students. However, this new addition to the cell phone accessory market is definitely not for kids. Those of you with dirty minds have probably guessed from the photo that the Vibra Exciter goes around a guy's you-know-what, so that when the phone buzzes it's...a very nice surprise.

The only problem is: how would you answer it? I can't imagine experiencing that, er, sensation while I was walking down the street, only to then have to reach into my pants to take a call. Though let's be honest, would you really want to stop the phone from buzzing by picking up?

Giorgio Armani goes high tech

Filed under: Style in the News

armani cell phoneWhat ever happened to the good old days when designers stuck to designing clothing and accessories? Giorgio Armani has confirmed that he will be creating an Armani branded cell phone for Samsung.

The cell phone, which is about the size of a credit card, will have a large LCD screen and touch-screen functionality that is similar to the iPhone. You would think a phone so tiny couldn't do much, but this phone is fully equipped with a camera, internet browser, and a Bluetooth stereo headset. The phone retails for about $915 US dollars (650 euros).

When Armani was asked why he decided to lend his designing skills to something more "technical" he said (in a statement):

"Today, fashion has expanded to encompass our way of life, not just how we dress, but how we design our home, the hotels we stay in, the car we drive, and the technology we buy. In fact, we make as much of a personal statement with the mobile phones that we carry or the televisions we have in our living rooms as we do with the shoes and bags we wear or the furnishings we choose to place in our homes. These are all lifestyle decisions, where design and performance are the criteria. Samsung has successfully anticipated the growing role for consumer electronics in our lives, while recognizing the importance of self-expression in the development of its products."

Armani's cell phone will be available in European countries in November 2007 and will expand to other markets in 2008.

Levi's = Desperate design house

Levi's phonePerhaps calling Levi's a design house is a bit strong but because they are typically the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word 'denim' I think we can let it slide.

Levi's has fallen from grace with denim lovers everywhere due to rise of premium denim labels like Seven for All Mankind, Citizens, Taverniti SO, Rock & Republic, and more. Instead of bowing out gracefully Levi's is "jumping the shark" with the September launch of a new cell phone in Paris. Designed by Modelabs Group, the phone will have a camera, Bluetooth technology, MP3 player and a nice big pocket – otherwise known as a micro SD slot.

Who would want a Levi's branded cell phone? I have no idea. For once in our modern lives we have enough new cell phones. As a Blackberry user you would have to pry it out of my cold dead hands to get me to try something new and with the iPhones release just days away I think we have our fill.

Would you buy Levi's cell phone?
