James Brown relics auctioned off today

Filed under: Style in the News, Vintage and Retro, Celebrities with Style

For anyone who wants to get up close and personal with some of the Godfather of Soul's personal effects, a smattering of James Brown's jumpsuits, hair-care products, and memorabilia are being auctioned off this afternoon at Christie's in New York. We'd like to say it's because James Brown wanted to share some of his sex-machine fashion secrets with the world -- but really a judge ordered these items to be auctioned off to help his estate pay off a bunch of debts. Oh well.

Organizers hope that this collection of the Godfather's magical soul treasures -- many of them having to do with his always perfect hair -- will fetch about $2 million. Among the 350 items on the auction block are: his Grammy Award for Living in America, a green vinyl living room set, picks, combs, 80 rollers, hair lotion, and a few jumpsuits with the word "SEX" stitched across the front.

Come to think of it, there's probably no other celebrity who's left behind so many outfits that we want to buy.

Tony Soprano is having a garage sale at Christie's

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

For those of you who still find yourself grieving over the loss of the Sopranos series, here's a great chance to get your hands on a first rate memorabilia -- but it probably won't come cheap. James Gandolfini has decided to auction off his former character's costume pieces on June 25th at Christie's in Manhattan. The proceeds from the auction will go the the Wounded Warrior Project -- a Florida-based charity for wounded veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The auction will sell 24 complete outfits from the show. That's everything from his trademark salami-stained wife-beater, to the bloody shirt and pants that Tony wore when Uncle Junior shot him. They're even hocking the black striped bathrobe and boxers he wore to go out and get the paper every morning -- which actually look pretty comfy if you happen to share the mobster's measurements. Some outfits are expected to sell as low as $500.

Kate Moss, artists' muse

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Even without makeup Kate Moss causes a stir, of course it also helps that she is without clothing. Fashion Week Daily reports that photographs of a nude Moss will be auctioned on May 31 during the Christie's photography auction in London. The Kate goods include a 1996 print by Irving Penn, a 6 x 6-foot image by Albert Watson and a set of six prints of Moss without makeup, taken by Chuck Close. Bidders better bring lots of cash, Kate is estimated to sell for prices ranging from around $12,000 for a photo taken by one of her friends to $44,000 for the Penn pic.

These Kates are comparative bargains. A set of six pictures of Kate Moss, done by artist Banksy in the style of Andy Warhol, sold for about $94,000 last year and the nude Lucien Freud painting of Miss Moss sold for $7.3 million back in 2005.
