Breast Implant Sales Sag as Market Takes a Beating - Recession Chic

Filed under: Style in the News, Cosmetics, Skin Care

A lawyer holds two silicone breast implantsIs good, old fashioned natural beauty making an unexpected comeback? The popularity of surgically enhanced bodies has been skyrocketing for as long as we can remember, but it's beginning to look like the winds of change are finally blowing in the opposite direction. According to the NY Times, sales of breast implants, botox, and even less expensive facial fillers are all taking it on the chin as Americans can no longer afford to finance their way to a more idealized physique.

Cate Blanchett - No Plastic Surgery for This A-Lister

Cate BlanchettWhile most Hollywood actresses no doubt feel the pressure to stave off the aging process (can you say Nicole Kidman?), there's at least one red carpet stunner who won't go to extreme measures to halt the aging process. Cate Blanchett has good motivation for avoiding going under the knife -- her husband said he'd divorce her if she did.

Botox - How Young is Too Young?

Filed under: Skin Care, Beauty Tips

woman getting botoxWe pretty much take for granted that most Hollywood hotties of a certain age have probably had Botox injections to keep their faces free of lines. But, how young is too young for a woman to start having the procedure done? And, more importantly, at what age do doctors begin suggesting it?

Shannen Doherty refuses plastic surgery

(Click Shannen's photo to see our Top 10 Celeb Plastic Surgery Disasters!)

Shannen Doherty might not be what most of us would consider a role model, but it sounds like her attitude toward self-esteem might be something other actresses could aspire to. The 37-year-old 90210 actress has said that she'll never change her looks through plastic surgery.

"These are my looks, whether you like them or not," said Doherty. "They work for me. I have a gap in the middle of my teeth. You know how many people wanted to cover that gap?"

Eye-lifts for men - A booming business

With all of the beauty products and cosmetics being marketed to men, it's really no surprise that more and more men are electing to go under the knife. However, one procedure in particular is catching on with lightening speed -- manbag (or eye-lift) surgery has more than quadrupled over the last two years in one chain of clinics, with similar increases seen across the board.

Tip of the day: Shadow for your shape

Filed under: Cosmetics, Style Tip of the Day

Did you know that most makeup tips try to work the eye into an almond shape? It's true. The shape is considered the most flattering and extremely exotic. However, the tips often don't take into consideration those with deep set, wide set, small eyes, round eyes, or heavily hooded eyes. And if you wear glasses? Puh-lease, you'll never find info for that! Except for here that is.

Oprah gets cast in a flattering light, literally

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

Over the years, there's no doubt that Oprah Winfrey's look has changed dramatically -- you can check her out right now at StyleList's Look of the Day. Her hair, her weight, her wardrobe -- they've all been switched up on a yearly basis. But, has she gone under the knife to make more drastic changes?

Many experts say no -- as a matter of fact, although the look of her face has changed somewhat throughout the years (most notably, her schnoz), it's more a matter of makeup and lighting than surgical intervention. Because, let's be real, folks -- how many of our faces don't look considerably different now than they did in the '80s?

The face that launched a thousand scalpels

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

It's one thing to want to copy a celebrity's hair style or outfit, but wanting to copy a celebrity's face seems like something else entirely.

That women envy Angelina Jolie's lips, cheekbones and eyes shouldn't come as a shock. But according to Australian College of Cosmetic Surgery president Michael Zacharia requests for Jolie's looks were becoming increasingly frequent. Dr. Zacharia claims, "It's common to hear people say 'I want lips or cheekbones like Angelina Jolie's', and her association with Brad Pitt has just accentuated this."

So I'm interested: Do you wish you had Angelina's features? If yes, how do you think Angelina Jolie's features would look on you? And if Angelina isn't your cup of tea, which celebrity's face do you sometimes covet?

Britney's extreme make-over

If ever there were a time for Britney Spears to get a new lease on life, it would be now. Unfortunately, instead of doing the real work of getting her life back in order, old Brit seems much more concerned with tackling superficial stuff -- like losing weight, buying new clothes and getting a nose job.

Over the past month, Britney has been busy dashing off to Las Vegas for bi-weekly soybean anti-fat injections. (Huh?) Following the six-week tofu procedure, Brit plans to get a new schnoz from the plastic surgeons who revamped Ashlee Simpson and Jennifer Aniston's profile.

And as if that weren't enough to prove her "new attitude," rumor has it that she's also about to have some serious liposuction to take her size six bod down to a size two.

No doubt she's pumped to get her figure back, but it seems to me that Britney would be much better served by sinking some of that cash into counseling and some of her free time into being a mother.

Botox at the mall?

Filed under: Stores We Love, Skin Care

Ever since the FDA approved Botox back in 2002, the injectable treatment has quickly become one of the most popular anti-aging procedures on the market. The Academy of Plastic Surgeons estimates that over 3.8 million Botox injections were performed last year alone.

With the minimally invasive procedure in high demand, Botox-ready "medical spas" have begun cropping up across the country. In fact, the number of these specialty spas has increased from 50 in 2002 to 2,500 in 2006.

If that isn't enough to convince you that the botulism shot has gone mainstream, consider this: you might be able to get Botox at your local mall. In an effort to bring services to closer to customers, retail spaces have become the new hot-spot for these medical spas.

According to Benjamin Akande, dean of the Webster University School of Business and Technology in St. Louis, opening up a medical spa facility in a mall is a smart business move. "Cosmetic surgery in the 21st century is not an anomaly," Akande said. "It's a daily fact of life."

At Dallas' NorthPark Center, for instance, the Klinger Spa offers Botox injections and Restylane treatments right next door to Barneys and Neiman Marcus. Presumably, the food court isn't far off either...

What do you think? Would you want to get Botox in a mall?

Extreme beauty: Eyelash transplants

If two coats of mascara and a set of false eyelashes can't achieve the kind of fringe you'd like, maybe an eyelash transplant is the way to go.

Using a procedure similar to the hair plug treatment for men, eyelash transplants take 30 to 40 hair follicles from the back of your scalp. One by one, your doctor will sew the hairs into your eyelids. (YIKES!) Once sewn into your eyelids, the new lashes behave much like any other human hair in that the transplants need to be occasionally trimmed or curled to achieve the full sweeping look of thick lashes.

Eyelash transplants cost around $4000 an eye. A good mascara costs about $9.

You do the math.
