Goodwill changes its image, rides consignment wave - Is it still a charity?

Filed under: Stores We Love, Steals and Deals

While it's no secret that a pretty good-sized chunk of Goodwill's revenue comes from well-to-do bargain hunter types, and not the low-income demographic that they initially set out to serve, are we OK with it when they start acknowledging that? Apparently, a handful of Goodwill stores around the country have hired advertising agencies and, in one case, even launched a fashion blog to help recast the brand's image from a charity into a mecca for sweet deals on designer clothing.

Tip of the day: Rachel Bilson's Edie Rose line launched

DKNY to make over food distribution vans

Filed under: Style in the News, Style for a Cause

DKNY is doing a little charity work. No, the label isn't stylishly dressing starving bloggers (although, Donna? That would be a good one!) -- instead, they are making over 15 food distribution vans for City Harvest.

Hey, a makeover is a makeover, and we loooove a makeover (and a good cause).

Cartier sues DKNY

Next to the epic designer sales, summer has been all about luxury companies suing each other left and right. Ebay got slammed by Louis Vuitton, but bounced back with a breezy win over uber lush jewelry company, Tiffany & Co.

And just before we all say good-bye to our summer crushes and bid adeui to our awesome internships, Cartier has set its lawyers loose on DKNY for making a watch that's looks eerily similar like one of Cartier's swanky timepieces.

I want that! Tod's bag

Las Vegas actress/model Molly Sims has recently been promoting her hosting duties with Kelly Ripa for the QVC Life from the Hampton's event. Their TV spoofs have been hilarious and Molly's outfit reflects the playful nature of the occasion.

The flirty sundress paired with a studded belt, gladiators, and a killer Tod's bag says something like "I'm in the ritzy Hampton's but I'm so rich and famous that I can play it down and still look hot suckas." We kid, we kid. She seems nicer than that. Her near makeup-less face and casually pulled back hair are also perfect for her beachy location and the laid-back atmosphere of the affair.

• DKNY dress, Bonton.com, $120

• Diane von Furstenberg belt, DVF.com, sold out

• Tod's "Peggy" bag, Bluefly, $990

• Giuseppe Zanotti Flat strappy sandal, Amazon.com, $549.95

Fashion crime: fur-haters graffitti DK's house

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Once again, anti-fur coalition forces have decided to set their sights on the home of fashion empress Donna Karan. This time, a group called the Paint Panthers decided that it would be a good idea to spray paint some messages to the designer on the road leading up to her house in the Hamptons. One message read "Bunny Butcher" in hot pink scrawl with an arrow pointing towards DK's house. Another featured a carton bunny and the message "I don't want to be a handbag."

The classic leather band

Who wears watches these days? If you ask most guys what time it is they'll probably start fumbling around for their cell phone -- but that's weak. Wristwatches are probably the most popular men's jewelry item and they're definitely the coolest. Why not make yourself look smarter -- and maybe a little more affluent -- than you really are? You can get a pretty nice designer watch for less than $50 at places like Ross.

I usually go for the sportier-looking metallic band, but something about this watch from DKNY caught my eye. I actually really like the way the leather band fits into the bezel. Other than that, it does all the normal watch stuff -- keeps the time, date, etc. None of these are as important as looking cool while it sits on your arm.

Pete Wentz creates make-up line

We have to give it to Pete Wentz.

He has been championing guy liner from the very beginning, so it's only fitting that he would become the first man to emerge from the punk scene to create a line of cosmetics specially tailored for all of the guys out there still bumming Dior's crayon eyeliner off their girlfriends.

Pete Wentz to design for Nordstrom

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Surprised to find out that Nordstrom is teaming up to do a collection with the guru of punky mall wear? Best known for playing bass in the horrible multi-platinum band Fall Out Boy, Pete Wentz is quickly becoming the darling of the fashion world. His own clothing line, Clandestine Industries, will be releasing a spring and summer collection of graphic tees, jeans, hoodies and accessories exclusively at Nordstrom running from in April and July.

I guess it's really not that surprising, since Wentz already designed a capsule collection for DKNY that came out last August. Still, Nordstrom is not DKNY, which takes a lot of risks with guest designers. Maybe they just think that Wentz is a bit of a guarantee, having an enormous fan-base of emo adolescents couldn't hurt sales. Obviously, this line is geared for juniors who are inclined to wear t-shirts inspired by Wentz's tattoos, so it'll be on display in the BP section.

Apparently, his t-shirts and jeans are meant to be unisex -- that seems like a remarkably bad idea -- but whatever. It won't stop junior high kids from pouring in to watch the Pete Wentz behind-the-scenes DVD as they loiter around the store. Let's just hope that Nordstrom isn't contractually obligated to jam Fall Out Boy's greatest hits.

Rachel Bilson is the next celebrity designer

So many celebs these days have their own fashion lines. These sort of announcements barely make headlines anymore. Rachel Bilson is going to be yet another in a long line of starlettes who use their popularity to get them a gig designing clothes. She's hooking up with DKNY to create a line of jeans for the brand. They will be sold in stores, starting in September, under the name Edie Rose.

Reaching out to DKNY, Rachel contacted them to see if they would be interested in working with her. The company gladly accepted. The DKNY president said, "Our customer has a real emotional connection with Rachel and she's always on the best-dressed lists, so it seemed like such a win-win for us. Rachel has real personal style and she is very involved in every step. You can really see that in the collection."

Some celebrity fashion lines make absolutely no sense -- Hello, who in the world is going to buy clothes made by Avril Lavigne?!? But, Rachel Bilson is actually somewhat of a fashionista. Aside from the fact that's she's tiny, perky and adorable, she really never gets it wrong. Her personal style is cute and edgy, yet not over the top or skanky.

Browse through the gallery and tell me if you agree. Is she worthy of having her own line?

Pete Wentz spreads evil via DKNY

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Pete WentzBack in September, I reported that Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz started his own clothing line, Clandestine Industries. After looking through the collection, I decided to try and ignore it, allowing it to stew in its own little corner of crappiness and eventually fizzle out. Unfortunately, the corner seems to have grown and even infiltrated other designers' worlds. Brace yourselves...

Wentz and DKNY have just struck up a deal for a new line of junior sportswear to be released in time for the back-to-school rush.

No! No! Do not want! If my younger sister (a member of the target demographic) gets anywhere near the line, I will set fire to her.

I will.
