Christian Lacroix Update - 'The Recession is Only Partly Responsible'

Filed under: Style in the News

Although his company has gone into a voluntary receivership and its future is far from certain, don't expect to see Christian Lacroix shedding any tears. The designer tells the Telegraph that he's "too angry to cry."

He's fighting mad, because it's not only his name that this company represents -- it's also the name of his father and grandfather, "men who brought me up to have a very rigid moral backbone; men who taught me never to have any debts," proclaims Lacroix.

In the Telegraph's article and interview, Lacroix talks about the effect the current economy has had on his business. "The recession was a gift to the management, really, because they could blame everything on that, but it was only partly responsible." The designer hasn't been paid in 18 months, admitting he's owed £1.2 million euros.

Rumor Patrol - Vera Wang to Join 'Dancing with the Stars' Cast?

Women everywhere dream of their big day: the tiered cake, the floral arrangements, the first dance, and, of course, the Vera Wang dress. I know, I wore one and had a fairy-tale wedding.

Her gowns and ready-to-wear are the epitome of elegance. As well they should be (and I don't mean because of the prices): Wang cut her couture teeth under the icy glare of Anna Wintour as a Senior Fashion Editor at Vogue -- there was (size) zero room for error.

After departing the fashion bible -- rumor has it she was passed over for the editor-in-chief job in favor of Wintour -- Wang spent two years working for Ralph Lauren, then set out on her own.

CFDA Awards 2009 - On the Scene

At last night's CFDA awards designers grabbed their muses of the moment and headed to Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in NYC for a lengthy ceremony hosted by comedienne Tracy Ullman.

Christening the new locale were sixty or so models aligned on the outdoor steps wearing the fall collections of the womenswear nominees: Marc Jacobs, Narciso Rodriguez and Rodarte.

Around the corner on 65th street, a sizable canopy served as the red carpet. "What is going on here?" asked one of the many gaping bystanders who had unearthed her camera phone and started snapping away. The answer was: a lot!

Karl Lagerfeld Disses Heidi Klum Again and This Time Brings Seal Into It

Karl Lagerfeld has it out for Heidi Klum! In Round 2, the Kaiser goes after hubby Seal. Photos: Getty Images

Karl Lagerfeld is at it again! His first Heidi Klum diss appeared in February's German GQ, where the Chanel designer said "I don't know Heidi Klum. She was never known in France. Claudia Schiffer also doesn't know who she is."

Now, as reported by The Sun, Lagerfeld has gone after Klum's husband Seal, saying "I am no dermatologist, but I wouldn't want his skin."

No word from Heidi or Seal, but that cheap shot doesn't deserve a response.

What's behind these mean-spirited attacks on the German supermodel and now her musician husband?

Christian Lacroix Update - Designer Refuses Bailout, Continues to Design

Filed under: Style in the News

Though Christian Lacroix is searching for a way to keep his couture house from crumbling, the designer is stubborn not desperate. According to WWD, one of Lacroix's big couture clients offered to bail him out, but Lacroix rebuffed the offer, saying, "I prefer her as a client rather than a chairwoman."

In the meantime, WWD reports that Lacroix continues to sketch designs to keep his seamstresses busy, hoping to still be able to show during couture week next month, saying, "They deserve it, even if we can't show it. I can't stand having them do nothing during this period because they have it in their blood. January and July, it's couture. It's a physical clock."

Would Michelle Obama Wear This?

Blue crush: A textured frock from Jason Wu Resort.

Jason Wu continued his recent parade of successes at his resort show in New York City on Thursday.

The designer presented his trademark pretty dresses and elegant daywear, ranging from a neon yellow shift dress with Swarovski crystal-studded shoulders to a tweed tulip skirt with matching jacket.

A belted cobalt blue number with petal detailing also struck our fancy, but the real question is: WWMW? (What Would Michelle Wear?)

And you don't have to wait for resort to hit stores to get your Jason Wu fix, check out the below styles available now.

Christian Lacroix Update - Designer Won't Give Up Without a Fight

Filed under: Style in the News

Christian Lacroix might be facing bankruptcy, but don't think for a moment that it's over for the designer. WWD obtained a few excerpts from a letter Lacroix wrote to the company's 125 employees, which makes it very clear that he'll do everything he can to keep the fashion house up and running.

According to WWD, the company owes a number of parties, and Lacroix himself is owed around $1.7 million. He said he's been designing collections "free of charge" for months now. (Normally, he contracts himself through XCLX, a company he owns which is also reported to be at risk of filing for bankruptcy.) He's vowed to give "200 percent" to "preserve the know-how, without which the lungs and heart of the house couldn't exist."

Is this the beginning of the end of high-end fashion houses? We certainly hope not! If all designers show as much resolve as Lacroix, our fingers are crossed that we'll get our couture fix for years to come.

Giorgio Armani Recovering From a Case of Hepatitis

Filed under: Style in the News

Designer Giorgio Armani has released a statement to address recent concerns about his health. According to WWD, the 73-year-old is currently recovering from hepatitis, which he described as "certainly ... not a rare illness, nevertheless it is one which requires some time for a complete recovery."

He's quick to point out, though, that while he's allowing himself time to recover, his company "has continued to operate normally with business as usual," and he remains in charge, adding that "everything in the company is proceeding with the usual energy.

As we all know, the "usual energy" for Armani would wear most of us out in short order. Considering the hands-on designer will be showing his men's signature and Emporio collections next month in Milan, we're guessing that he is most likely just slowing down to mortal speed. And it probably won't last long.

Victoria Beckham - Birkin Bag Lady

Victoria Beckham doesn't exactly shy away from excess. The former Spice Girl didn't earn the nickname "Posh" for nothing! It took serious dedication to shopping for couture clothes, shoes and, most importantly, bags. Hermès Birkin bags, to be exact.

The Big Money reports that Posh owns around 100 of the exclusive and pricey purses, a collection worth possibly $2 million. Bag prices range from approximately $6,000 to over $100,000, depending on the materials used. Exotic animal skins, like saltwater crocodile, up the price significantly, as do embellishments on the hardware (a crocodile Birkin with roughly 10 carats of diamonds sold at auction for $120,000).

Victoria Beckhams Birkin Bags

Victoria Beckham shops with her son and, of course, a gorgeous blue Birkin, large enough to hold plenty of toys and snacks. Hey, if she's going to drop that kind of cash on a handbag, it should at least be useful, right?

    X17online

Victoria Beckham arrives at Heathrow Airport wearing a polka dot Mac coat and basic black bag. You know, if an Hermes handbag can be considered basic.

    Bauer-Griffin

England football players' wives and girlfriends depart to Cologne for England's match against Sweden on June 20, 2006. Is she wearing shorts? A skirt? Who cares? She's got it covered with her fabulous bag.

    Chris Uncle, FilmMagic

Victoria Beckham and youngest son Cruz leave their hotel in Paris. Posh's chic, layered look should fit right in with the city's style.

    Bauer-Griffin

Victoria Beckham at the Farmer's Market on June 15, 2008. Because, you know, who doesn't take a ridiculously pricey designer bag to buy fresh cut flowers and veggies?

    X17online

Victoria Beckham arrives to Heathrow airport dressed to impress. As always.

    Bauer-Griffin

Victoria Beckham shops at Fred Segal in Santa Monice and then heads to the Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood, where she meets Katie Holmes and daughter Suri for dinner at the Bungalow. Just another day in the life of Posh, and, of course, another Birkin.

    Bauer-Griffin

Victoria Beckham uses her bag to brighten up an otherwise neutral ensemble at the airport.

    Bauer-Griffin

Victoria Beckham, rocking a black tipped french manicure, arrives at Los Angeles International Airport to fly back to England with Melanie Brown (Mel B) to work on a new Spice Girls single and a television commercial. No surprise here -- the bag is a perfect match for the dress, but we can probably guess which cost more.

    Bauer-Griffin

Posh sports a bright, 1960's-style dress while toting a hot pink ostrich Hermes Birkin purse. Victoria is trailed by several assistants who carry her luggage, block photographers, and escort her through security. Ever wonder what Mrs. Beckham carries in that expensive luggage of hers? Now we know: More expensive handbags.

    Bauer-Griffin

Okay, even if there wasn't a two-year waiting list to get a Birkin, most of us can't afford the price tag. And it's not like the value goes down over time (it's called an investment piece for a reason, people). However, we can dream, and we can gawk. And so can you -- check out the gallery of Posh and her many, many Birkins above!

Michelle Inspires Yet Another Fashion Designer

A flowery tribute to the First Lady's chic style. Photo courtesy of Elie Tahari.

It's not the fact that Michelle Obama continues to inspire fashion designers and shoppers alike that's surprising. It's that unlike preceding First Ladies, her style choices are extremely wearable, from brands we can actually pronounce, maybe afford, and at the very least, find in stores.

The accessibility of her modern style is so refreshing, though it continues to upset some high-end designers she isn't opting to wear.

But leave it to someone who knows a thing or two about designing for the modern-day woman, Elie Tahari, to design this aptly named "Michelle" dress (right).
