Ossie Clark Closing Its Doors

Emma Watson just made red carpet magic in a vintage Ossie Clark gown at the London premiere of "Harry Potter," and it's a good thing -- looks like, going forward, vintage will be the only option for wearing the brand.

Although Ossie Clark just relaunched this year, WWD reports that the label is shutting down due to market conditions.

A celebrity favorite and serious fashion player in the Sixties and Seventies, Clark's pieces were precise and architectural, including biased-cut silhouettes and full, swingy sleeves and skirts.

Despite his designs being wildly popular, Clark's mind was more on the creative side than the business end, and the company declared bankruptcy in 1983.

The label's latest designer, Avsh Alom Gur, left after designing the Fall 2009 collection to design his own signature line.

Tangled Up in Blue

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

Yellow was supposed to be the big color this year. But bright blue -- and its first cousins teal and turquoise -- showed up on several guests at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala Monday night, making it look a little bit like a 1985 bridesmaids' gathering. Albeit with a bunch of really lovely bridesmaids.

While these shades of blue can make for stunning dresses, they can still be hard to pull off. Teal, when it veers toward green, can make white skin look pale, and not it a good way. And any shade of blue can be a nightmare to accessorize. Add black shoes and you are headed for the disco. Go light or colored, and, well, you're back in the bridal party.

Happily, these women made blue look beautiful, and certainly appropriate for a cool and rainy spring day.

Brooke Shields adopted spring's one-shoulder look in deep blue, worn with a pair of Wonder Woman-worthy cuffs. Like many other guests, she wore her hair in soft, loose waves.

Cindy Crawford and Donatella Versace both wore shades of blue Versace. Crawford chose matching blue shoes and a blue clutch.

Never one to be left out of a trend, Madonna showed up in a teal headdress.

Katy Perry wore blue as if she meant business.

Michelle Inspires Yet Another Fashion Designer

A flowery tribute to the First Lady's chic style. Photo courtesy of Elie Tahari.

It's not the fact that Michelle Obama continues to inspire fashion designers and shoppers alike that's surprising. It's that unlike preceding First Ladies, her style choices are extremely wearable, from brands we can actually pronounce, maybe afford, and at the very least, find in stores.

The accessibility of her modern style is so refreshing, though it continues to upset some high-end designers she isn't opting to wear.

But leave it to someone who knows a thing or two about designing for the modern-day woman, Elie Tahari, to design this aptly named "Michelle" dress (right).

Wear It Today, Return It Tomorrow

dressHow annoying is it to pay hundreds of dollars for a dress that you'll probably only wear once? Or worse, not having the money to buy that DVF gown you've been drooling over? Apparently, Wear Today Gone Tomorrow founder Madeline Passarelli heard your cries and has answered your prayers. "The thrill of new clothing wears off after the first or second wear ... and it's just too expensive and wasteful to have a closet full of clothing you don't wear." Thus Wear Today Gone Tomorrow was born, allowing women to borrow designer clothing at 90% off of the retail value for that special event and then allowing them to return it the next day -- no nagging sales people required.

Badgley Mischka has been around for twenty years. There is no doubt that the men behind the brand, Mark Badgley and James Mischka, who met at Parsons School of Design in 1982 and formed their renowned house in 1988, have deserved every minute of their success, of course. But their 20th Anniversary Campaign is more than just celebrating two decades in the industry with a photo full of pretty starlets. It goes deeper than that for everyone involved -- the men behind the clothes, the women in the photos, the legend behind the lens, and the legions of loyal fans who love them all.

jessica bielThough she doesn't make red carpet appearances often, Jessica Biel is one of our favorite starlets, bar none. Like Miss Cameron Diaz, Jessica epitomizes tomboy chic. Both leading ladies also prove that sporty simply doesn't equally dowdy. Or baggy for that matter. It means chic and comfortable – a key for anyone who wants to feel confident in their clothes. Just look closely at Jessica's dress.
